Relive the Geek Glory of the Cassette Tape and Rescue Your Old Music
Yes, it was bulky, it didn't hold an awful lot of music and it wore out eventually, but most people today had and loved a portable tape player, recorded songs off the radio or CD player to create lovingly compiled mix tapes, carefully labeled each one - and then took pot luck on the faded and illegible labels of mix tapes from five years before. You can still pick them up very cheaply at the odd garage sale, and one tends to find boxes of them in the attic or buried under the CDs. And occasionally, you'll find a song or two that isn't available on CD or digitially yet. They will never be the collector's item for the music lover that LPs are if only because they just aren't that durable, but they were easy to use, easy to record onto and over, and much less fragile. Cassettes were the first true option for portable music. Love them for that.

I had a tape deck through much of my childhood, and a portable tape player for a couple of years in my early teens (and then CDs came along and the batteries lasted so much longer that there was no contest!) I used to lie awake at night recording songs off the radio - and off coure, my parents had a lot of tapes to rifle through!

"Anyone who understands the obsessive attention to detail, the time it took to collate, select, and edit the content of a perfectly executed mix tape, or just someone who appreciated the rhythms and nuances of such extraordinary artifacts will treasure this collection of stories, comfortable and secure in the knowledge that such exquisite efforts were not made in vain and indeed there was a time when a humble cassette tape was perhaps the greatest gift of all."
- Shirley Manson, lead singer of Garbage
Did You Ever Make Mix Tapes?
And why did you make them?
As a valentine's gift, to pass around your circle of friends, to listen to in the car, or just as a way of recording songs for yourself - did you ever create a mix tape or two for yourself? Were they any good? Was it fun, tiresome, interesting?
Is this a familiar activity or an entirely new concept?

I loved making mix tapes! It was cheap, fun and a good way to express yourself!
Treasures-By-Brenda says:
Definitely, there were many mixed tapes in my youth.
jembie says:
I used to make loads of mixtapes to take on long journeys and listen to on my walkman and also to take to friends houses and parties.
Eh. Pass. Never tried and if I did I didn't like it.

- I wouldn't say I miss the cassette tape and I do occasionally listen to one...don't tell. Just as you said, there are, occasionally, tapes of music that did not get put onto CD and the only way to listen is...on tape. Lensrolled back to my rare VHS videotapes page.

- Great lens. I have several music mix cassettes that were given to me as gifts and party tapes. My husband loves music and is one of the few people we know who still has a cassette player (in fact, he has 3!) but he is slowly converting all of his cassettes and LPs to digital format. In fact, he has turned his hobby into a business.

- An awesome lens bringing back some memories. Actually I didn't just use the cassette to mix up music, it was also the storage device for my first computer, before the 5.25'' floppy came out. Thumbs up.

- Cassette tapes were a big part of my life. In my mid-teens I had hundereds of cassettes. Before we had a VCR I even used to record all my favourite TV shows on cassette too.

- Led Zepplin played on a battered portable tape player while driving though Spain and Portugal in our long teachers summer break back in the 70s! I still have lots- I know I should really throw them out....
