"Cast Your Bread" Poem, Books and Gift Ideas

The Cast Your Bread poem was written by E. F. Hayward, published in 1922 in "Poems from the North Woods". I have a copy of the original book, and cherish every poem by the poet. There are more poetry books and unique gifts ideas, like food for the soul.

You can print out the poem here, and find some clipart to match Hayward's log cabin philosophy. Poetry books and some decorative pictures and posters with poems on them as well.

In Ecclesiastes 11:1 is the Bible Scripture, "Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again."

Cast Your Bread

By E. F. Hayward

Poems from the North Woods

My review of this book.

I have been honored to have Poems from the North Woods in my collection of poetry books. It was a gift to me in 1972 by a friend. I grew-up in the north woods of Minnesota in the wilderness country of Kabetogama Lake, and can related to the log cabin philosophy of Hayward. His musings have been inspiring and uplifting for me through the years.

Hayward shared his knowledge, wisdom, and his faith in his writings. He also shared his view of the world, and his great love for the silence and beauty of nature and animals, and of his dear wife, friends, and family. He was a man of faith and a reader of Scriptures that come through in many poems. If I had to pick a favorite poem from the book, I could not. If I had to pick a favorite book of poems, it would be this one.

Sower Sowing Seed Clipart

SEEDTIME AND HARVET

Remember, my friend, when sowing your seeds,
To choose with great care, every grain;
For in every field there are some noxious weeds,
Be earful, don't plant them again.

Select each seed with the greatest of care,
Cast out every one that is bad;
When harvest time comes, you'll have, as you share,
A field that will make your heart glad.

If careless of seed, your work's thrown away,
The harvest will show your mistakes;
Choose with care your words and acts every day,
Then note the difference it makes;

Kind words, and good acts, are seeds which will pay---
They will thrive, wherever they're sown;
All others are foul---you should throw them away,
And leave them forever alone.

Casting is Sowing

Sower Sows the Seed Clipart

We cast our seed into a garden and expect a harvest, it is the law of sowing of reaping. "Whatever you sow, that shall you also reap." When we cast our bread upon the waters, or our deeds, we can expect a return. For every action there is a reaction, its a spiritual law that is in place. Kind of like, what goes up ... must come down.

Sowing and reaping is also called the law of attraction.

Meaning of "The Bread of Life"

Jesus Christ

The literal interpretation of the phrase "The Bread of Life". The food that we require to sustain us.
The figurative interpretation is - the spiritual food for a full life. The phrase is used by the Christian church to refer to Jesus Christ.
The Origin of the Phrase:

Bible verse, John 6:35 ( King James Version )

"And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."

Apart from the Bible, the earliest reference to the phrase in literature is by Philip Stubbes in his The anatomie of abuses, 1583:

"To breeke the bread of life to their charges.""

    What a wonderful lens! I clicked on it because one of the first lens I wrote was based on the parable of the Mustard Seed. This is my faith at it's basis - that no matter what we keep sowing the seeds that we know will bear good fruit, and eventually they will.
  • Tipi Feb 6, 2012 @ 9:42 pm | delete
    I love that and its true, if we plant good seed, we'll get a good harvest and the law of sowing and reaping does work whether we believe it or not.
