Cast Iron Trivets - Colorful Kitchenware and Practical too!

Trivets are small stands for hot plates and pans. They can be made from wood, plastic, ceramics, bamboo or metal - anything which can withstand heat - but traditionally, Trivets were made from cast iron.

What is Cast Iron and Why is it Used?

Cast iron is re-melted pig iron, plus scrap iron and steel, minus contaminants, heated togher in a furnace. The molten iron is then cast into a mold. Cast iron is resistant to wear and rust, making it a durable material for extended use.

Collecting Iron Trivets

Want to Collect Trivets?

Iron trivets may have a mark on the underside of the trivet. The round Sprue and the rectangular Wedge marks were used before 1865. A rectangular Gate mark along the rim indicates castings where more than one trivet was cast in one mold pour. These are typical of castings predating 1895.

Give a thought to the displaying of your collection - will you display your collection on stands or by hanging? Will you collect your trivets according to their age, by their purpose or just collect the designs you like?

Trivet Trivia

The word 'Trivet' is derived from the Middle English word 'trevet', a cooking vessel, and the Old English Word 'trefet,' which means three-footed.

Trivets were originally made to keep pots and kettles above an open fire. The trivet kept the food cooking at a lower temperature than if placed directly on the coals.

Authentic old cast iron trivets can be identified by circular or rectangular casting marks on the reverse side of the trivet.

Early metal objects for household use were forged by the local blacksmith.
