Casual and Low-Profile DSLR Camera Bags

Every camera should have a camera bag. A bag does not become a camera if you put a camera in it. Right? So it is really important for you to select the right camera bag. It will after all be the home of your Pentax... er.. DSLR camera when you're on the go.

This lens is about choosing the right camera bag for your precious DSLR camera bag. My camera bag is a blue/orange Crumpler 4 Million Dollar Home Photo Bag from Crumpler. But before I decided on it... I did my research and came up with the list below. I hope this lens will help you decide on a suitable camera bag for your "My Precious". Please leave any comments, advice, tips, hints, camera stores or anything you think might help a fellow photographer in deciding which camera bag to go in the guest book below.

I'll start the lens with a few tips I got from "professional photographers" and from my own experiences with lugging a non-camera bag bag.

Choosing the Casual DSLR Camera Bag

...based on experience

Camera bags are everywhere. There are probably as many tons are there are models. From simple waist bags to full cart bags. There are backpacks, messenger bags, hip packs, sling and shoulder carriers, duffel bags, day packs, small-medium-large packs... name it and that size may just be available.

Whatever your line in photography is... photojournalist, nature photographer, or a paparazzi, you'll need a camera bag. Period. But the question is: Which camera bag is the right one? Out of the plethora of choices you have to know how to find... "The One". Unfortunately, we're not here to find the right camera bag for you. We are here to find the right LOW-PROFILE bag for you. So that when you walk down the street no one will notice that you are an "evil" :-) paparazzi.

I love all types of photography. Be it portraits, macros, landscapes... but I tend to lean on the side of street photography. That's the reason for the Top Ten low-profile and casual camera bag. That means that I'm not the bring-all-your-g*ddamn-lenses-and-flash type of photographer (geez I'm starting to think I'm a photographer). I hope rou're like me because if you're not then my next lens is for you...

So here are the guidelines I follow when selecting a camera bag:

  • The camera should not scream "HEY THERE!!! I AM CAMERA BAG"

  • It should be water resistant

  • The material should be strong enough to hold my weight if I hang on it.

  • Double ripstop soft canvas if possible

  • Should have a soft padded interior.

  • The dividers should not be fixed for customized layouts.

  • Straps, belts and everything should distribute the weight properly

  • Straps and belts (when possible) should have steel wires. Theft prevention

Crumpler 4 Million Dollar Home Photo Bag, Brown/Orange

Crumpler has unique line of camera bags. Even the names are unique. It is your basic no non-sense camera bag that comes in different bright and dark colors. It has a large zippered mesh pocket on the inside of the top flap. A large pocket s on the outside and the inside is sectioned with customizable soft dividers using velcro strips. It is water resistant and does not scream CAMERA BAG. A casual look will give the impression of just that... a simple bag. Trust me this is my favorite bag. I use it to carry my Pentax K-x with a 70-300mm lens, extra batteries, my eyeglasses and two sets of batteries plus a cleaning kit.

Adding additinal padding to the strap would improve this bag immensely. But it's perfect as it is. :-) So I have a 4 million dollar home and a 5 million dollar home home... the 6 million and 7 million dollar home is just to big for me. On a casual street photography session that would be like screaming... "Hey look I've got a bag here and I look really stupid". Hahahaha!!!

Shootsac Deluxe Shooters Kit, Basic Black Neoprene Lens Bag plus interchangeable Baroque Cover

It sure looks something out of vogue or some classy woman's fashion magazine. I personally thing this chic camera bag was designed for girls, ladies and women. The design is clearly geared to matching your wardrobe with the camera bag. It does have 35+ True fabric covers to choose from. I doubt if there's anything in your wardrobe that won't match with a shoot sac. Rumors have it (it's actually a fact - but I like the sound of "rumors") that Jessica Claire is the brain behind shoot sac... a lady photographer who uses mstly prime lenses and therefore has to change lenses often.

Shootsac is made of strong and soft neoprene fabric that can accomodate 6 lenses (i.e. if carry that much lenses) and still retains the photographeres fashion sense and not look like a robot from hell. So I highly recommend Shootsac for the gorgeous and beautiful lady photographers out there.

Billingham Small Hadley Camera Bag Sage
Billingham 503348

Cool, classy, and excellent. Billinghams camera bags are basically designed around the messenger bag camera concept. It doesn't shout CAMERA HERE FOLKS!!!. Billingham camera bags come in different sizes.... the compact ones are just that compact... designed to carry only the essentials. I love the Billingham 225 for that. But do I own a Billingham? Nah, but I got the chance to try one for 25 minutes with my Pentax K-x and 70-300mm lens. It was quite a tight with the k-x standing upright. But the space around was enough for another prime lens a bottle of water (not advisable), a compact jacket and an extra shirt and of course a small lunch. With a bigger DSLR with say a battery grip.. then it would be much tighter and room for only the camera, a few lenses and maybe a flash.

It is also made up of slots that can be moved around. The material is strong and thick. It has several pockets on the inside and outside to carry other stuff you can dream of. It could have been better with a padded strap.

Tamrac 5768 Velocity 8x Pro Photo Sling Pack
(Black)

This Tamrac Velocity 8X DSLR Camera Bag is like the Billingham 225 a messenger bag with a twist. Insted of wearing it like a backup... it is worn like a lsing. This allows the photographer to swing around the bag to your front withot removing thebag from your back. When swung around to your front, a zippered flap can be easily opend to give access to the camera equipment.

You can actually stack lenses with dividers in between them which is kind of cool for a small bag. But its strong point in im opinion is an affordable price tag (so you can spend more on your camera), very comfortable on the shoulder (yes I've tried it too... one of my photog friends has a battered Tamrac Veolcity 7x) and forces you to bring only the essentials... a camera, a prime, a bottle of water, a shirt, and an umbrella... and a small lunch. :-)

Kata KT DT-211 Digital Torso-Pack

The Kata Digital Torso series design is not really my type of camera bag when it comes to simplicity. Yes it is simple enugh but in my opinion it shouts to the world... I'M a PHOTOGRAPHER. Nevertheless it is a top notch camera bag. It is designed ingeniously so that the photographer may or may no longer need a camera strap. It is comfortable to wear for long periods of time (e.g. hikes and festival shoot outs). It can be quickly rotated forward, push a snap release, pull out your lunch err... your camera and start shooting. One thing I like here is taht you can use the bag to brace your arms for more shooting stability. It's surely a bag designed for shooting and not lugging.

You can fit a Pentax K-x (this small in the first place) or a D300 in it with extra space of a lens or a flash. Lunch? You can squeeze you lunch and put it on the side. It will give your camera equipment some extra padding. Trust me I've used one of these bags... (in a bag store of course.... remember I use a Crumpler).
