Cat Adoption in Morgantown WV

Welcome to Cat Adoption in Morgantown WV

To begin our cat adoption search, we first assessed our needs and desires. Our cat Sugar, that we had for twelve years, had recently passed. We wanted another cat and probably two, so they could help keep each other company and be playmates with one another.

Another requirement that we had, was that they already needed to be able to go up and down stairs, since we keep the litter box in the basement, and wanted to also enjoy the cats upstairs as well.

We checked out some different options; an ad in our local paper, the Dominion Post, Friends of the Four Legged and Furry, and P.U.R.R. (People United for Rescue and Rehabilitation.) Another place that has both cats and dogs for adoption is the Monongalia County Canine Adoption Center They are all great resources, however, the one that fit our needs the most at the time was P.U.R.R.

For the most part, the cats at P.U.R.R. live openly together, allowing them to socialize. Visiting the cats in a place they were used to also allowed us to see more of the regular personality.

The two PURR-Babes in the picture are the ones that we adopted.

Our Cat Muffin

This is Muffin on the kitchen floor, taking it easy.

"I'm the black and white cat, also known as a Tuxedo cat. My new owners named me Muffin. I didn't always relax on the kitchen floor. My first few days in my new home, I hung out in the basement and searched out all the good hiding places.

My new owners came to the basement quite a bit just to sit. I'd eventually come out for petting and cuddling. Eventually, I even stayed on my owner's lap while she sat on the basement steps. I had already seen my adopted cat sister go up and down the stairs many times. After that, I gave it a try too.

Now I know where everything is upstairs too.

I like playing ball now too. My favorite ones are the ones that Sunshine isn't chasing at the time, and the hard plastic ones. I like the noise they make."

Our Cat Sunshine

This is our cat Sunshine, relaxing by the kitchen door.

"My colors are mostly black with some beige mixed in. I'm known as a Tortoise-shell, or Tortie for short.

My new owners adopted Muffin and me at the same time. Muffin was new to the adoption room and was just getting used to things there at P.U.R.R. I however, knew my way around and went wherever I wanted.

In my new home, I found a thing called stairs and lots more rooms. And they have things called furniture. My new people are pretty nice. They feed us, groom us, scoop our litter boxes (We have three and there's only two of us here!), and provide very comfy laps. They also play ball with us. My favorites are the soft sponge balls that I can pick up and carry around; and the small rubber ones that go far."

Going to P.U.R.R.

We had been to the local animal shelter before, and to stores like Petco and Pestmart that do cat adoptions. We were used to seeing a cat or two in a cage, that you could get out and hold.

When we got to P.U.R.R., I was a little bit surprised. There were cages in the room, but for the most part, most of the cats were out and about, going to and jumping wherever they pleased.

We met Lorna, founder of P.U.R.R., and she introduced us to the cats we had inquired about; we had reviewed pictures and some facts about them on the web. I was also open to whatever else might work out.

Besides desiring two cats that were litter trained and could do stairs, I also wanted them to be okay with me holding them. Being in "their" place that they were used to, allowed us to see more of the cats' true personalities. The two that relaxed most in my arms, and didn't leap at us from somewhere, were the ones we picked.

Pet Carrier

for Transporting Your Cats

Since we live in Morgantown and drove to Grafton, it was especially helpful having a pet carrier to help keep the cats calmer and also contained in the car.

We already had one pet carrier, and borrowed one from P.U.R.R. so that each cat could have their own space for the drive home.

We like that harder plastic ones that can easily be wiped out if needed.

We also used some padded material (a towel works fine) to line the bottom for comfort.

Cat Supplies

Everything was already set up for the cats at our home

Having already had cats before, it didn't take much to be ready for our new ones. But in case this is your first experience with adopting cats, some things you will need to have on hand: litter box, litter, scooper, food, water bowl, food dish.

Another thing we do whenever we introduce a new cat or cats to our home, is to start off with getting them used to a small part of their new home. We closed off one side of the basement and made sure they knew where their litter boxes and feeding dishes were. After a day or two of adjusting to that area, we opened up the door to the other part of the basement, and then eventually opened the pet door for them to come upstairs. This way, they can more gradually adjust, and more gradually adapt to what is acceptable; i.e. what they can get on, what they can scratch, etc.

Muffin and Sunshine look like two very special cats. They are so lucky to have you in their lives. And, that Muffin surely has some interesting markings.
