Cats, Art and A Perfect Combination

Cat artist Deborah Julian found a sweet spot for art and cats in creating fine art prints.

Professionally, she's been known for her fine art photography. You can check out examples of her Fine Art Photography. But once she began adopting cats, they began inserting themselves in the art. It's a cat thing. Getting involved in everything, that is. Their amazing curiosity seldom rests.

The exciting results from her colorfully blending cats and art range from thoughtful motto prints to color rich pictures that imagine felines as actors in famous works of art. They range from insightful to hilarious.

So, here enjoy my favorite cat artist and some of her work posted on Amazon.

A Cat In Degas' Hat Shop

A Cat, Some Ribbon and Classic Art

I decided to start with an example Deborah Julian's work as a cat artist with her re-imagining of this classic painting from the French father of the impressionist, Edgar Degas, because it has all the elements that make her work so great: fine art, cats, humor and beauty.

Degas is considered a founding influence for the impressionist era in France that opened the door to popular works by the likes of Monet, Cezanne and Van Gogh. His paintings often featured female subjects and emphasized his love of graceful forms, especially ballet dancers, with a brilliant intuition for colors.

His millinery shop looks at a woman trying on hats and is composed of delicate contrasts in color and line. It's an easy painting to love.

So, what if Degas had cats? Deborah Julian asked herself. A cat would never resists that broad band of brightly colored ribbon.

The result is both beautiful and funny in a feline sort of way. This playful cat may even make it just a bit more beautiful.

Cat Print: Matisse Goldfish

by Deborah Julian

Matisse Goldfish Cat Print Deborah Julian

Matisse Goldfish is from Deborah Julian's cat art prints on Etsy. Cats in famous art are some her most popular.

Two cats try to solve the mystery of a fishbowl with brightly colored goldfish. The dilemma: get the fish without getting wet. The cats add a playful effect to a painting by Matisse that inspired it. And the fish seem totally confident, in spite of the giant cat face in his window.

What A Cat Can Tell A Woman About Her Man

The Cat Scan

As a cat artist, Deborah Julian also brings in her favorite cats to make entertaining statements about everyday life. This is one of the most amusing.

How Her Cat Feels About Him Cat Print

This cat art print came about from controversy.

First came a print, You Can Tell A Lot About A Man By How His Cat Feels About Him.

Deborah Julian offered it at an art fair. A woman approached her booth and explained, "It should say 'how her cat feels about him.'"

There's a good case for both sides of the most reliable cat scan controversy. So, a second version was created, and this is the result.

A serious-looking black cat (Aren't they all "serious-looking?") looks straight at you in making a determined statement. You decide, but he looks confident.

A Famous Variation on Le Chat Noir

The World's Best Known Black Cat

Le Chat Noir, in its many variations, is well-known around the world. Originally an advertising poster, it's image of a black cat has become a visual meme. Here, from Travels With George: Paris, a book she illustrated, Deborah Julian gives us a whole new version.

In this book, the cat artist becomes an illustrator, decorating a book about two New York cats who smuggle their way into a trip to Paris with over a dozen full color illustrations.

There are full page pictures of George and his companion, Billy, as they visit the Eiffel Tower, Luxembourg Gardens, the Tuileries and more, but this one has been the most popular as a cat art print sold separately.

In the story, George and Billy have just concluded a long day of discovery in Paris by strolling along the Seine on leashes. Climbing back up to street level, they are confronted with some startling posters at a riverside kiosk.

Van Gogh's Bedroom

Cats Added

Hands down, this has been Deborah Julian's most popular cat art creation. It's funny and eye-catching. Cat lovers grab this one as much for themselves as for gifts for cat loving friends.

Vincent Van Gogh's wildly popular reputation for stunning art was earned mainly from the prolific output of just a few years at the end of his life. A great turning point was when he escaped Paris for Arles and painted pictures, like the one this is based on of his bedroom.

It was the force of Van Gogh's vision of color that lit the room far more brightly than reality could have made possible, and he saw his small room as a composition of objects, several of which he had to alter to make it work for him.

Here, our cat artist offers her explanation about why Van Gogh could never sleep. After all, every comfortable space was taken, and after coming home from an arduous day of plein air painting, he had to wonder why none of his artwork was hanging straight anymore. What had his cats been up to?

Cats Just Wanna Have Fun

And cat artists and others can't be faulted for wanting to join in and follow this great example.

Good Friends Cat Print

"Good friends don't need a special invitation to have fun," reads this balanced portrait of cat doing what cats do: enjoy life.

This cat art print is meant to be put up as a reminder to learn from cats how to enjoy life as much as we can. They do, and we can learn from their example.

Office Cat (After Vuillard) Cat Print

by Deborah Julian

Office Cat Vuillard Cat Print Deborah Julian

in Office Cat (After Vuillard), Deborah Julian imagines a cat with a peculiar habit becoming part of an Edouard Vuillard painting that made her think of a problem she frequently has to deal with.

One of her studio cats enjoys "helping" with her work by liberating pens, paper, clips, etc. from the tabletop where she's working.

What I find so amusing about this series, Famous Artists' Cats, is how believable the situations are and how seamlessly the cats fit right in.
