Cat House Training 101

There%u2019s a little more to housetraining a cat than simply plopping a litter box in a random room

Cats are clean animals. They prefer to "do their business" in sand or dirt . . . just about any substance they can paw at and cover their wastes up with. So don't worry. You're dealing with an animal that "wants" to use some device.

This may sound a bit strange to you, but cats like to use the litter box in private. Yes, if they were people, they would be the type that would not only close the bathroom door completely, they would probably lock the door as well

Placing the Litterbox
find a place in your home where the box is easily accessible to your cat, but far enough away from the heavy traffic. Tuck the litter box away in a corner of a room or in a small alcove that's not used much. Your cat will certainly appreciate it.

Ensure that the litter box is kept clean
This task is vastly easier than it used to be, thanks to a handy innovation called clumping litter. Also called scoopable litter, not only will you love this, your cat will love this as well.

Having problems using the litter box?
A common reason for cats not using the litter box is stress. Yes, cats do get stressed out. Have you brought a new cat or kitten into the house? That could cause your cat some stress. If you go on vacation and leave her alone - even if you've had someone looking after her - she could be stressed. Even a new piece of furniture (believe it or not) can cause her stress.

Cat Owner manual - What You Need to be a Cat Owner
You're preparing for a new family member, I see. A kitten, you say? And I also see you have a checklist of everything you think you need prior to the cat even stepping foot in the house. Good for you. Well, let's see what's on your list now...

10 Must Have Cat Training Tips
The key to effective training is consistency. Whatever you choose, be sure to do it on regularly, otherwise, you'll be sending your cat mixed signals. And that will only make it that much harder to train her. Forget about cat training in 10 minutes...

How Cats Communicate

What Your Cat Is Trying To Tell You

Cats meow; that's the predominate way how cats communicate ,and the type of meow they use gives you a good idea of what they're trying to communicate with you. This is especially true if your pet is a Siamese cat. This breed of cat is very vocal. One Siamese owner had a cat that meowed loudly - and persistently - whenever it wanted to play a game of hide and seek. Every time the cat used his "special meow", which the owner recognized, she knew that he was "hiding" and needed to be "found." She dutifully played.

A favorite method of communicating is the cat's purr, which is unique to the feline species. You may already know that a cat purrs when he's content. Animal behaviorists now believe that they also purr when they are in the mood to be sociable.

However, if you pay close attention to your cat, you'll notice that he also purrs when he's nervous, feeling a little uneasy or even if he's in great pain. Some experts think it's a feline form of "meditation" and that this action comforts them. If this theory is at all correct, the "purring" sound of the feline is the equivalent of our "Ohm" when we meditate. You probably are already aware that a "puffed up" tail indicates fear. You'll recognize this signal as soon as you see it. Your pets tail will be at least twice the size it normally is. This could mean he's been fighting with another cat, or he's just encountered something unexpected that startled him.

Does your cat "head-butt" you? That's the cat's standard affectionate greeting. Try "head-butting" him back. Seriously. Not very hard of course. You'll discover that he really enjoys this. You'll also soon discover that you've got a bond forming with this feline.

What About Hairballs ?

Cats are fastidiously clean animals. You'll discover they are constantly cleaning themselves with their rough, sandpaper-like tongues. The very mechanism, though, that helps them to control shedding also contributes to one of their health problems, hairballs. Hairballs are a very real threat to your cat's digestion. They can block the food that's already been digested from traveling through his intestines.

First Step: Take matters in your own hands, literally! Brush! Brush! Brush! Groom you kitty often. Most cats find it most enjoyable and it builds a marvelous bond between you and your feline.

If you discover that your kitten may need more aid than this, there are many effective hairball remedies on the market today. They come in a variety of forms, from granules you sprinkle inconspicuously on his food to gels.
