Cross Stitch Terminology Glossary

Definitons for terminology used on this cross stitch page.

Aida - the cross stitch cloth specifically designed for for this purpose.

Chart - A black & white or full color preprinted graph detailing the colors and placement for your stitches. (also known as a Pattern or Graph) Floss and fabrics need to be purchased separately.

Count - determines the size of the finished cross stitch by the size of the squares in the aida cloth.

Cross Stitch Kit - Contains all that is necessary to complete the cross stitch including thread, needle & cloth.

Floss - Is usually a cotton thread consisting of multiple strands for separating and mixing on the more complicated patterns.

Stamped Cross Stitch - The cloth is pre-stamped with the design placement and washes away when your finished with your cross stitch.

Thread - May be used to indicate floss though it can also be silk or metallic in nature.

A Few Tips For Creating A Beautiful Cross Stitch

I've been a professional picture framer for over 20 years and I have stretched quite literally thousands of cross stitches over the years. In that Time I've learned a couple of things.

* Always Wash Your Hands Before Handling Your cross Stitch Hands are naturally oily so wash them first to remove these natural oils. These oils can sink into the fabric and may not come out after washing your cross stitch.

* Avoid Tight Stitches A couple of things happen when pulling stitches overly tight. Your cross stitch may not stretch straight and the stitches may pop while the framer is trying to get it straight

* Always Stitches In The Same Direction. This will give your cross stitch will have a smooth and tapestry like look.

* Don't Not Your Stitches Simply thread them through other stitches to hold them firmly in place. Knotting your floss will cause it to look and be lumpy when framed.

* Bleed Check Your Floss Always a good habit to do with high bleeder colors like red, though many companies now no longer make bleeding colors. However you don't want to fin out which kind you have after you wash it. Just soak the floss (or a snippet of floss) and lay on paper towel so do a bleed check.

* Do Not Leave Cross Stitches In Hoops For Extended Periods Of Time. Sometimes the ring marks don't wash out.

* Roll Your Cross Stitch When Storing Do not fold it because the edges get creased and dirty and may not wash out.

* Wash (with a mild soap) and if necessary iron your cross stitch before having it framed. Not all frame shops offer this service for you. and it will give you a better finished look.
