Building a Cat Enclosure

Cats ! Cats! and more Cats!

I'm making this page about cat enclosures because they are a safe haven for our cute furry friends. All cats should have a safe place to play with out the dangers of other predators. The bigger the better and they enjoy the outdoors.

In the Beginning

In the beginning we had 5 cats who shared our home.We had a small 2 bedroom house and they did okay. They all got along well. My husband worked at a lumber company and they had many stray cats. He and another employee took care of these cats. From feeding to spay and neutering. We brought one home due to an injury.
We had a new home built on the property in April 2006. Then in March 2007 we brought a female home with the intention of getting her spayed. She was pregnant. Brought home one of her previous daughters. She was pregnant.Mom had 4 kittens 3/17/07 and daughter had 6 on 4/15/07 while another daughter had 5 or six that same weekend at the lumber company. So we decided to convert our old house into the "cat house" and build an outdoor enclosure in the front yard. We started by building a window type box off the front porch. By this time we started bringing the other momma and her kittens home.

Next--The Big One

So now my husband has decided we need to build a enclosure 20ft by 24ft by 8 1/2 ft tall. And the building took off. Using 2x4x8 pressure treated lumber we began the frame work. Then using 1-in poultry
netting we stapled 2 rows all around and over the top.
We added a door for us to have access to the cats.We put in platforms for them to lay around on in the sun and even put benches for us and our guest to sit and watch them play.We added landings and perches for them to sit on to be up off the ground. We hung a double teir platform toward the center. They really like to be up high. Then we added another in and out tunnel.

This is the main way in or out. Later we add more ramps

New addition

By this time we figured we need to add a seperate room in case someone needed to be isolated away from the rest for some reason. You never know when one will get sick and needs to be seperated. So we started adding on another 8ft x 20ft room. We have one male that hasn't been neutered so he and his 4 buddies from the lumber company share this enclosure along with half of the inside of the house. As soon as we can get him neutered we will open the doors and allow all the cats to mingle.
