Cat facts about why you need to get another feline for your family. In my jaded opinion cats are good pets. They are very independent and easy to care for, again my opinion. Once you've made the decision to bring a new feline into the fold of your family, it is then time to decide if you want a purebred or a mixed breed.

Certain breeds have distinct personality traits that you may want to consider. Our latest member of the family is Thomas. He is a mixed breed but mainly an american wire hair. This is a small breed. Thomas is 5 years old, full grown and wieghs in at about 6 lbs. He is very athletic and loving but his fur is the oposite of soft.

This brings up the next decision when it comes to choosing a new Cat. Do you get a male cat or female cat? All kittens are cute, cuddly and playful, but gender does make a difference. Male cats are usually very loving and friendly and exhibit trust at an early age.

This makes them more social and less likely to hide when company visits. Female cats are more cautious in approaching strangers and slightly more independent. Once they completly bond with you they can be just as loving as any male cat! We have learned alot from our boy and girl cat. We have documented some of the issues we faced and provide some answers to common cat health questions for felow feline owners.

Cats love fresh waterYou should keep the litter box in a private place, and once you choose the ideal place never move it again. This will ensure that your cat will always know where it is and never go anywhere else. If you had to move it, I would recommend getting a second box and deploying that in the new desired position. After several months your cat will get use to using both locations. Then you can faze out the old box by slowly reducing the amount of litter in box 1. Eventually kitty will just use box #2. Cats love deep litter boxes and this can also be key in litter training.

Water bowls should be easy to clean and have enough space for plenty of liquid. Also a flat broad bottom so not to tip over. Make sure your cat has plenty of clean fresh water on hand. Wash the bowl twice daily if your able. They love fresh water. My cats prefur bottled water because here in south florida the water stinks (literally). A visitor also told me that felines can sense or smell the oxygen content in water. This is why after it sits for awhile your pet is not interested anymore. Try filtered or bottled water and keep changing it, they will love you for it.

It appears that a common belief between Experts is that if the cat remains to be an indoor cat, and never goes outside that their lifespan can triple over a cat that frequently goes outside. In doing some research on cats that go outside.

I have found several authority, articles stating that the average lifespan of an outdoor cat would be about six years. The reasons for this shortened lifespan are obvious. But just a few would be automobile accidents, picking up parasites and diseases, being hunted by larger animals and territorial fights with their own feline kind.

As far as increasing the lifespan of your indoor cat, there are several things you can do to increase how long cats live. Of course, number one on this list would be regular visits to the veterinarian. A good rule of thumb would be to visit your veterinarian about once a year.

Stories of the recent contribution to human and cat history include the feline prowess at hunting small vermin like mice and rats. Early North American settlements valued the presence of cats to help protect the grain storage areas and other food areas from attack by local mice and rats.

The felines were nice to have around because they were not a direct competitor for the human food source and actually protected it from vermin.

The cats extreme efficiency at ridding the settlements of unwanted vermin made them a welcomed and loved member of the community. The cats history is filled with stories of feline and humans working side-by-side for common goals.

A little known fact about cats is that their ability for hunting vermin stems from the ability to hear ultra high-pitched frequencies used by these rodents. The human ear cannot hear these sounds made by the rodents. The cat can not only here these ultra-high pitch noises, but they have a tremendous directional sense of hearing and can pinpoint the location of the undesired animal.

Strange cat behavior and eating mouse tails

Our kitty Riley exhibits some weird cat behavior When she is given a toy mousy. She will bat the mouse around for a short time, but then she starts to chew on the tail until the tail is removed from the mousy. She will then swallow this piece of tail. A few days later it turns up in the litter box.

This strange cat behavior kind of boggles my mind. We are not sure why she eats the tail off of the mousy. She will only eat the tail, if it is a high quality leather mouse tail. She will not eat the tail off of any cheap or string tailed mousy. This is not an isolated incident. She performs this tale surgery, every time she is giving a new mousy. All of her mouse toys are now missing their tails. Our other cat is not interested in the tail at all.

We have stoped this behavior by cutting the tails off the mousy before deployment because we are woried about the health issues this may cause. Which leads me to tell you about the cat health insurance we purchased. After being slamed with a vet bill close to $4,000 to save one of our cats life we purchased pet insurance so we are covered in the future. Thomas the american wirehairOne amazing cat fact is how the feline has adapted to humans. My development is filled with stray, feral and outdoor pet cats. They each have their own corner of the world and co exist quite well with eachother and the human home owners. This is something that dogs could not pull off.

A lost or stray dog will tend to wonder until it drops from exhaustion, whereas long before exhaustion sets in, a lost cat will seek the source of warmth and food it has learned is available from its friend the human.

Many stray or lost cats have found a new home, simply by persistence and appealing to the good nature of an available household. This sense of confidence in finding human caregivers can give a cat a very independent feeling that may be taken to the extreme.

If this cat becomes upset with its current environment, it remembers that all he has to do is move on to the next household and work his way into the family. It would seem that cats easily view the world, as the grass is greener on the other side.
