How to train a Cat to use a Toilet

A simple guide to cats hygiene and toilet training

Cats are one of very few pets, which live with us inside our homes. We have cats at home, but the live outside, which is different to having a cat or cats living inside with you. There are many reasons why people choose to have their cats living inside with them such as living in the inner city. Taking care of your cat is normally done by the whole family. Or so it seems.

When bringing your cat home from a pet shop or where ever you have bought it from, there are a few things you must do and have. Most people do the normal things, having toys and food.
The one thing, a lot of people don't give much thought, is the cat hygiene and toilet training and you have to get a litter tray and litter for your cat , if your cat spends most of it's time inside.

It is best to train cats from a young age and observing your cat, you'll find out what your cat does. By doing this you can pick up bad habits early and do something about it, before it becomes to expensive.

This lens will be rewritten in the coming month to reflect the change in the title

Choosing a Cat Litter Tray

I guess not many people give this a second thought

Most cats take easy to the toilet training, but why do some cats ignore and even avoid it.
Another important question is: How many cat do you have ling inside?

Lets give this a minute of our time and think about it.

Why do we humans have so many different types of toilet paper

A cat litter tray is usually a box or tray of some sort. Then we add the cat litter and place it somewhere out of our way and yet it has to be for the cat to find.

Cats can be very fussy and I guess this applies to the litter in the cat litter tray, as it does to the food its eating. I believe we can take it a step further.
Where do you place a litter tray in the house.

Video clips on cats using a litter tray

Video clip 1:tiny kitten using a messy litter box

I can recall from own experience how messy little kittens become. Here we have only one kitten. We used the litter tray in the bathroom and had 4 kittens. It does get very messy so you have to choose your place very careful to where to place the litter tray.

Video clip 2:Training a Kitten to Use Litter Tray

This clip shows you what not to do and is funny to watch. Little kids, kitten and litter tray don't go together very well. Watch it.

Video clip 3: How Do I Train My Kitten To Use The Litter Box?

This is a really good how to video. It does go through the steps from taking an outdoor cat to train it for the inside.

Toilet training

How to train a cat to use the litter tray and then eliminate the tray

An important point here is that not everyone likes to share their toilet with a cat. If that is you skip all of this or just read it out of interest

Here is a tip or two on how to get the cat to use the tray to start with and then eliminate altogether later.

To be honest when i heart about it first i had to laugh and thought "as if " . Then i saw a video where a cat did use the toilet this way and i was amazed. I'll try to find that video or something similar and add it to this lens.

Also this method may not appeal to everyone to share the toilet with their cat and it would be easier if there were two toilets in the house.

Having said all this, doing this will save you time ( cleaning the tray and removing the litter) and money ( not needing the litter ). There will be hopefully little or even better no mess. Once the cat has been trained to go into the toilet, you will be able to eliminate the cat litter and the smell associated with cat litter.

You will need a few items to get you started.

Aluminum foil, a tray, and cat litter preferably flushable kitty litter.

You will have to use an aluminum tray to put on the toilet.

With two toilets in the house, which is a lot easier, you can leave the tray right in the toilet and not have to remove it when you need to use the toilet in the house.

If you have only one toilet, it is not that convenient to share with your cat. You will just have to remove the tray whenever you want to use the toilet. Make sure to leave the seat down and lid up for the training period and this maybe as hard for you as it is for the cat haha.

When you have visitors make them aware that you are training a cat on the toilet, so that your cat does not make a mess on the floor if the lid is down. Another thing to point out here is to leave the door open or add a little door for the cat.

first replace the cats litter box with an aluminum-cooking tray. The aluminum tray should be the right size to fit in the toilet. The seat lid should be able to close so that the seat lid holds the tray in place. Remember do not close the lid. The results may be less than attractive. Start moving the tray closer and closer to the toilet that the cat will be using. Make sure to move it when the cat is there so it knows it is there.

Once the litter tray is in the bathroom put a something about an inch thick under the tray. Use something which doesn't slip like Magazines are a very bad choice for this. Magazines are slick and the litter box may fall and make a mess you then need to clean up . Continue to raise the litter box about an inch every day or every second day depending on the cat until the litter box is the same level as the toilet.
The cat will be able to just step into the litter box at first. As you raise the litter box, the cat will have to jump into the box. Make sure the box is secure so it does not move when the cat jumps into the litter box.

To give a helping hand let the cat know its there by scraping its claws in the tray. If there is no litter in the tray the cat will be confused and will not understand what is going on. After the tray is in the toilet, you can use cat litter, which is flushable which i didn't know was available. If you use flushable kitty litter, you will have little or no mess to clean up.

Continue to leave the tray there for about 3 weeks. And here comes the clever part. During this time reduce the litter in the tray and make a 1" diameter hole in the tray. Every week, make the hole 1/2" bigger. If the cat messes on the floor then the cat is trying to let you know that you are moving to fast. If your cat is heavy, try using two trays to hold its weight or support the weight in another way

You may want to wait to train your cat until it is at least 6 months old. Cats younger than that cannot balance well and may end up being a big problem mainly falling in and drowning.

Do not get discouraged as the process could take up to two to three months. The cat will start with two paws on the tray. As the hole you put into the tray gets bigger (by 1/2" per week) it will move a third leg to the toilet seat. Finally, the cat will have all four legs on the seat.

If the cat cannot grip the seat very well you may consider making some sort of insert for the toilet e.g. small timber frame.

If the cat is the only one to use that toilet, you might put some kind of tape it can grip to on the seat lid.

Some promised video's cats using toilet

Video clip 1:Litter Kwitter - The Original Cat Toilet Training System
This information in quotes came with the video clip and I thought it was worth mentioning here again.

"The human toilet is designed to deal with bodily waste in the most hygienic way we know. If you let your cat walk on your bed, benches,%uFEFF and your lap already, then having those same paws on your toilet seat should be more than acceptable.

Also, this has been used to train 3 legged cats, they are very nimble, and generally cats don't like water, we have yet to hear of one falling in."

This is an excellent video on how to train your cat using the toilet. Watching maybe easier then reading it all.

Video clip 2: Cat using toilet & toilet paper

This is a short clip showing how a trained cat is using the toilet and then toilet paper. Some people wouldn't be happy the cat using toilet paper as it is not cheap.

Video clip 3:CAT USES TOILET THEN FLUSHES

This is taking it a step further. Well made quick video

This is a dream for cat owners - but my cats are litter trained and the thought of trying to achieve this final level of training just makes my head hurt!

I would LOVE to hear from people who succeeded in this training... there certainly are enough videos on YouTube to prove it can be done!
