What you should know when toilet training your cat.

More and more people are discovering the advantages of toilet training your cat. Most end up giving up after months despitefully trying to teach their cats this useful trick. Which is such a shame, as toilet training really doesn't have to be hard, and can be such a joyful experience for both you and your cat. I discovered the hard way that most problems are caused by incorrect information on this subject. Last year, when I started to train my own lovely cat, I read and absorbed as much information as I could. Even after reading 4 different books, the results remain pretty disappointing though. Me, nor my cat was actually benefiting from the whole process and my husband probably started thinking I was going crazy with the whole 'I will and shall train our cat how to use the toilet'. Luckily, it didn't take much longer before I finally discovered what silly me, and not my cat, was doing wrong. Now I'm here, writing this little site to learn you why to actually toilet train your cat, how to do it, and most import: what to take into consideration and to watch out for!

The 4 Reasons why you should toilet train your cat.

Benefits for both you and your cat.

1) Fun & It builds up a great relationship with your cat.
Yes, it took some time before my lovely cat fully mastered using the toilet, but it was a really joyful experience. I can still imagine how proud I felt whenever she successfully mastered another new step!

2) Toilet training results in a Healthier Cat
You might know this feeling as a new cat owner. It's the idea and worry of your cat possibly getting sick or an infection, when you see her/him sniffing and playing around in the dirty litter. Before I actually started toilet training my cat I had a short conversation with my local pet doctor. He explained to me that recent studies had pointed out that cats themselves actually equate the smell of a litter box with danger. Litter disinfectants and fragrances actually seemed to be unhealthy for my cat. I saw the whole litter thingy as fairly natural
process before I got this information, so this was another major reason to start looking into toilet training.

3) No more litter changing/scooping
Do I have to explain this one? Well, I love my cat, but I personally didn't really like to have to change the litter over and over again, sometimes a few times a day due to the well known 'bad odors'. Anyway, I'm happy now I know I won't find a mess at home when I return from work or shopping.

4) To impress friends and family
Let me tell you, they simply won't know what they're seeing when they discover your cat is actually able to appropriately use and flush the toilet. Most cat owners still see it as an impossible obstacle, and will often look up to both you and your cat. Funny, while it's actually quite easy to accomplish.

One major misunderstanding you will run into!

Toilet training your cat seems to be a quite new phenomenon so finding actually useful information posed out to be quite a problem. I got started myself by reading a few books and websites and started experimenting around. Most of the times everything completely failed resulting in me being pretty pissed off at my cat, for being plain stupid. It wasn't until my cousin noticed what I was doing, and gave me some tips, before I released I was the one who was actually behaving stupidly! She gave me a link to a website completely dedicated to toilet training your cat. It may sound pretty obvious and I didn't realize this, but it pointed out that there isn't simply a single approved method which would work for all cats. Training your cat highly depends on his/her breed and even more important: his/her personality. So I bought the ebook from the same site and I was happy to finally start seeing results! It was the 5th book I purchased and my husband probably would've canceled our Visa card if he found out about it :-). It was luckily also my last purchase, as the whole training process finally started to get on track. Anyway, I'm proud to say my cat learned to both use and flush the toilet in approximately 2months. So, use the wrong methods and you won't get anywhere. Use the right methods and you'll notice soon enough that your pet is far from stupid!

Toilet train your own cat too, in a fun and easy matter!

Become litter free in 2007The most important thing I've learned by now, is: You first have to train yourself! Cat toilet training is easy and fun, but you have to know where to start or you'll end up nowhere. You can find a select few tips beneath this column, but you'll need more in-depth info to train your cat really successfully. Required information like specific breed training, what not to do and to watch out for, and easy to follow step by step processes are all discussed in the book I mentioned before.

Make sure you read it before starting to train your cat!

Cat Toilet Training: Silly Cats

Silly CatThe solution is pretty easy usually: be patient and praise your cat as much as possible. Even the dumbest cat will understand after a while what's she's supposed to do if you praise her enough! If she doesn't want to jump on the toilet: simply position her there manually, and praise here as much as possible. Simply repeat this for every necessary step and she will realize soon enough how she can get herself a lot of attention by doing every step all by herself.

Excellent toilet trained cat.

The Cat & The Toilet: Little Cats & Kittens

I haven't heard of any cat really falling in the toilet yet, but I would strongly advise not to start toilet training any kittens. Better safe than sorry! Toilet training a young kitten could result in her/him falling in to the toilet, which is not only unethical in some way, but will probably also give your cat literally a 'toilet trauma'. So just wait some time until they've grown a little bigger, and simply start by training them how to use the litter box first.
