Cat Training Aides - An Introduction

Whether you are thinking about getting a cat or you already have one, congratulations!  Cats can make wonderful pets, providing years of happiness and joy for their owner.  Keep in mind,  however,  that cats can also be independent and aloof.  If they are not properly trained, cats can become clingy, needy, and neurotic. Therefore your cat should be house trained.

The purpose of this lens is to describe some of the cat training aides you should use when house training your cat.

Cat Training Aides - Behavior Modification

Before We Begin....a Reminder

Before you begin to train your cat, please remember that it is going to take some time and patience. Some cats learn new behaviors at a quicker pace then others. Also expect your cat to backslide once in awhile. That's only normal.

Never under any circumstances hit your cat. You'll simply defeat the purpose your trying to achieve since your cat will learn to fear you.

Behavior modification is simply giving positive rewards ( treats, praises, other signs of affection ) to your cat when he behaves correctly and appropriate punishments ( a little spray of water or a loud "NO" ) if he backslides.

Cat Training Aides - How to Stop a Cat from Biting

Let's Get Rid of the Biting - Bring On the Toys !

Cats will bite for a number of reasons, among them is sheer boredom. Yup, just like us, our feline friends can get bored. When they do, they sometimes bite.

Biting is a way of communicating. When cats bite , in this case, they're saying, "Hey, I need some attention". So get him some interactive toys and spend quality time with your cat.

Here are some cat training aides your cat will love.

They include:

1. Laser beam - This is a little plastic mouse with a laser beam inside. Just press the the button on top and move the red laser beam all around. Your cat will go crazy trying to catch that beam and you'll have fun watching your cat.

2. Kitty Go Krazy - This toy really is three in one. An electronic arm simulates mouse movements on a track along with a talking ball and other attachments that make for hours of fun.

3. Cat -a-Trail Cat Play Tunnel - This tunnel comes with two fuzzy balls of catnip attached to the inside. Since cats love to play in secluded areas, yours will have a blast inside this tunnel.

Cat Training Aides - Cat Scratching Furniture

Time to Redirect Your Cat Away from the Furniture Toward Something More Appropriate

Don't let your cat turn your good furniture into his personal scratching post.

First, let's get him and keep him away from the furniture, then redirect him toward something more appropriate to scratch on.

You can stop cat scratching furniture with:

1. Ssscat - This product is something else. Ssscat contains a motion detector. Just place a can of this on or near your furniture. The minute your cat gets within range, a burst of non-toxic pressurized air squirts out of the can, scarring your cat away. A few more bursts from the can and he'll stay away permanently.

Redirect your cat toward :

2. A sisal woven scratching post - According to vets, cats prefer sisal fabric to scratch on as opposed to any other material. They also prefer sisal woven, as opposed to sisal rope, scratching posts. The woven sisal is irresistible to cats.

Make sure the scratching post is at least 32 inches high so your cat can fully extend his body and stretch at the same time.

Cat Training Aides - Toilet Training Cats

Bye Bye Litter Box, Hello Toilet Seat

During the past decade more cat owners have tired of the daily and weekly smell associated with cleaning their cat's litter box. So, they've decided to throw out the litter box and train their cat to use the toilet. You can too.

Toilet training cats involves a step by step approach culminating when the cat uses the toilet. Before that can happen a cat needs to become accustomed to using the toilet seat and that is where a toilet training kit comes in very very handy.

These kits come with adjustable seats that fit right over your toilet seat. The diameter of the seats adjust from small where more cat litter is placed to large where very little if any cat litter is used. The largest seat is just a bit smaller than the diameter of your toilet seat.

Before you know it your cat is using your toilet to do his business.

2. Cat training should be structured using a system of rewards and appropriate punishments.

3. What you do in terms of training or not training your cat will determine your cat's behavior.
