Catahoula Leopard Dogs - All-American Breed

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a very unique and interesting dog breed with deep roots in the history of the Southeastern part of the United States. It was originally developed by the Catahoula Indian Tribe in Louisiana and is today in fact, the State Dog of Louisiana.

Today, Catahoulas are found herding cattle, hunting wild pigs and are well adapted to a variety of strenuous outdoor activities. They also make excellent rural companion dogs.

I first became aware of this breed when my daughter brought back a rescued Catahoula from South Carolina, where she had been a working student at an equine training facility. Although many people are aware of this breed in the Southern U.S., very few people in New England have a clue about them. "A Cata...what?", is the usual response.

This lens is my attempt to introduce the Catahoula breed to a far larger scope of folks outside of the deep South.

The lens photo, is a picture of my daughter's dog Reese, now 2 years old.

Reese the Catahoula Leopard Dog

by Greg Marlett

Reese is a Catahoula Leopard dog, which has been our good fortune. He is an abosolute joy to be with and gets plenty of attention wherever we go. In the south he is immediately identified by people as a Catahoula. In New England, few people have a clue as to his breeding and most have never heard of a Catahoula. A Cata.... what (?), is the usual response. These dogs are really interesting and distinct in their character and behavior.

Catahoula Leopard Dogs are the only known North American domesticated breed, and are thought to have been developed by Native American tribes in Louisiana and the Southeastern part of the U.S. Later crossed with the various breeds brought by subsequent European explorers, such as the Mastiff and Greyhound favored by the Spanish and the Beauceron, favored by the French. Catahoula breeders have kept the breed pure to the present day, although there are several other American breeds, such as the Mountain Cur, which are thought to be related.

The Catahoula is renown as a herding and hunting dog and was bred for these activities. Today they are used to herd and protect cattle, as well as to hunt game, from squirrels to bears. They have amazing endurance and are agile and athletic. They are considered the biggest and most aggresive of the cattle dogs and will outwork and outfight all other cattle breeds in defense of their owner, livestock and property. Originally, they were bred to handle cattle and wild hogs in the most rugged and remote areas.

Preferred size is from 20-26", weight 50-90 lbs, with a few individuals larger, although most males average 60-70 lbs in lean working condition, & about 24" tall. Short haired, long tail, natural flop ear (like a Dalmatian ear), they come in every color of the rainbow, but are best known for a blue/grey base with black/liver spots ("blue Leopard"), tan legs and face, white toes and chest. Many variations on this general pattern. Spots occur in all colors. Blue/glass or parti-colored "marbled" or "cracked"eyes are common in every litter. Often a dog will have eyes of two different colors.

Leopard dogs are very loyal, loving, intelligent and independent....seemingly, thinking for themselves. They need an assertive owner and are best suited for rural areas, where they have a lot of room to run. My daughter's dog Reese, loves the horse stable environment, where he can socialize with the other dogs and accompany her on trail rides.

The Catahoula Leopard Dog Resource

by Don Abney

Finally, a book that discusses this wonderful dog. I adopted a stray dog 12 years ago. I did not know what kind of dog he was, but he was different from all the other dogs I have owned. My vet informed me that he is a Catahoula. He has been my companion ever since. I have been looking for someing more about this great breed and this book answered many questions about my dog, from why he has glass eyes to his need to please. My Catahoula was diagnosed with liver cancer recently, and has about six months left. If someone looked up the word "dog" in the dictionary, there should be a photo of a Catahoula. They are truly great dogs. Thanks for the great read!!

Glad to see others writing about Catahoulas. We have a mixed breed Catahoula that is the nicest dog that you'd ever want to meet and also get regular visits from his friend, full blooded, Amos. I have featured this lens on Rio, a most exceptional dog.

Cool lens, I had never heard of this breed before, but then I never heard of Maine Coon Cats until I adopted a kitten that seemed really big for 4 months old and my vet said he was normal for a Maine coon...These Catahoula Leopard Dog's are really pretty, I have a pit-bull now that's 12, and I'm pretty partial to that breed, but love all animals... thanks for the cool lens.
