Have you ever taken a Catamaran Vacation sailing the British Virgin Islands? Well, we have!

A first for me and my hubby was a catamaran vacation in the British Virgin Islands. I've prepared a cool slide show that I've included to show you the beautiful scenery that we took in. We captured some beautiful photographs of our catamarn vacation. I am recommending that you consider a catamaran vacation for yourself.

To give you a taste of our ORIGINAL sailing plan, I've mapped out the days of our trip with cool pics compliments of Google Earth.  I've also found some great videos compliments of YouTube.

A start to our catamaran vacation!

Heading out from Jacksonville, FL to the British Virgin Islands

We packed our bags and headed out on a 6:30am flight on Friday, December 28, 2007 for our first ever Catamaran vacation sailing the BVI!  We connected in Atlanta for a flight to Tortola, British Virgin Islands.  After one night in a hotel on Tortola where we hooked up with three other couples, we took a jamming ferry to hook up with our Catamaran -- a Voyage 440.  Then we spent the first night docked on the catamaran before we took O-F-F for our one-week adventure.

Ah, a slideshow of our actual catamaran vacation in the British Virgin Islands!

A bit more about a Catamaran

What is a catamaran?

Category: File - :St-Vaast Catamaran Wikimedia Commons.jpg|thumb|200px|right|Two catamaran sailboats, leaving Saint-Vaast Harbourg

A catamaran (from Tamil kattumaram) is a type of multihulled boat or ship consisting of two hulls, or vakas, joined by some structure, the most basic being a frame, formed of akas. Catamarans can be sail- or engine-powered.

Catamarans are a relatively recent introduction to the design of boats for both leisure and sport sailing, although they have been used since time immemorial among the paravas, a fishing community in the southern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and independently in Oceania, where Polynesian catamarans and outrigger canoes allowed seafaring Polynesians to settle the world's most far-flung islands.

In recreational sailing, catamarans, and multihulls in general, had been met by a degree of skepticism from Western sailors accustomed to more "traditional" monohull designs, mainly because multihulls were based on, to them, completely alien and strange concepts, with balance based on geometry rather than weight distribution. However, the catamaran has arguably become the best design for fast ferries, because their speed, stability and large capacity are valuable.

More info on the Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands are the eastern island group of the Leeward Islands, which are the northern part of the Lesser Antilles, which form the border between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Politically, the north-eastern islands form the British Virgin Islands and the south-western ones the United States Virgin Islands.

The British Virgin Islands is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom comprising Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, over fifty smaller islands, and Anegada to the north. The United States Virgin Islands is an unincorporated territory of the United States comprising St. Croix to the south, with St. John, St. Thomas, and smaller islands. The Virgin Passage separates the U.S. Virgin Islands from the "Spanish Virgin Islands" or "Passage Islands", Vieques and Culebra, which are the easternmost islands of Puerto Rico.

More info on United States Virgin Islands

:''This article is about the territory of the United States Virgin Islands. For the British Overseas Territory of the Virgin Islands, see British Virgin Islands. For the archipelago of the Virgin Islands, see Virgin Islands.

The United States Virgin Islands is a group of islands in the Caribbean that are an insular area of the United States. The islands are geographically part of the Virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles.

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas, along with the much smaller but historically distinct Water Island, and many other surrounding minor islands. The total land area of the territory is . As of the 2000 census the population was 108,612.2000 Population Counts for the U.S. Virgin Islands, U.S. Census Bureau.

The main islands have nicknames often used by locals: "Twin City" (St. Croix), "Rock City" (St. Thomas), "Love City" (St. John), and "Small City" (Water Island).

Based in B.V.I.

The Voyage 440 Catamaran is based in the British Virgin Islands and accommodates 8 to 10 charter guests comfortably in 4 queen cabins, 4 heads/showers, two bow cabins, galley up.

More info on the British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands (BVI), also called the Territory of the Virgin Islands, are a British overseas territory, located in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico. The islands make up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, the remaining islands constituting the U.S. Virgin Islands. Historically "Territory of the Virgin Islands" was always used, but in practice since 1917 they have been almost universally referred to as the "British Virgin Islands" to distinguish the islands from the American Territory.British Virgin Islands government publications had traditionally continued to commence with "The Territory of the Virgin Islands", but recently, more and more legislation now simply refers to the Territory as the British Virgin Islands. The Interpretation Act (Cap 136) (1985) defines the "Territory" as simply the "Virgin Islands"; but the Insolvency Act, 2003 defines a "foreign company" as 'a body corporate that is incorporated, registered or formed outside the British Virgin Islands.' To add to the regional confusion, the Puerto Rican islands of Culebra, Vieques and surrounding islands began referring to themselves as the "Spanish Virgin Islands" as part of a tourism drive in the early 2000s.

The British Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke, along with over fifty other smaller islands and cays. Approximately fifteen of the islands are inhabited. The capital, Road Town, is situated on Tortola, the largest island which is approximately long and wide. The islands have a total population of about 22,000, of whom approximately 18,000 live on Tortola.

Catamarans are faster than single-hull boats ...

* Each catamaran hull is thinner in cross-section than those of monohulls.

* Catamarans are lighter as there is no keel counterweight.

* Catamarans have a wider beam, making them more stable and able to carry more sail area per unit of length.

* Greater stability means that the sail is more likely to stay upright in a gust, drawing more power than a monohull's sail.

The scoop on Tortola

Tortola is the largest and most populated of the British Virgin Islands, a group of islands which form part of the archipelago of the Virgin Islands. Local belief is that the name was originally given to the island by Christopher Columbus, meaning "land of the Turtle Dove". In actuality Columbus named the island Santa Ana. The Dutch settled, and dubbed it Ter Tholen, after an island off the west coast of the Netherlands. When the British moved in they altered the name to its present day form of Tortola.

The scoop on Jost Van Dyke

At roughly 8 square kilometers, Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the four main islands of the British Virgin Islands, the northern portion of the archipelago of the Virgin Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Jost Van Dyke lies about 5 miles to the northwest of Tortola and 5 miles to the north of Saint John. Little Jost Van Dyke lies off its eastern end.

Like many of the neighboring islands, it is volcanic in origin and mountainous. The highest point on the island is Roach Hill at 321 meters (1054 ft).

The scoop on Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda is the third-largest (after Tortola and Anegada) and second most populous of the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Located at approximately 18 degrees, 48 minutes North, and 64 degrees, 30 minutes West, it covers an area of about 8 square miles (21 km²). Christopher Columbus is said to have named the island "The Fat Virgin", because the island's profile on the horizon looks like a fat woman lying on her side.

The main town is Spanish Town on the southwestern part of the island.

An unusual geologic formation known as "The Baths" located on the southern end of the island makes Virgin Gorda one of the BVI's major tourist destinations. At The Baths, the beach shows evidence of the island's volcanic origins, as huge granite boulders lie in piles on the beach, forming scenic grottoes that are open to the sea. North of the Baths is the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, formerly owned Little Dix Bay. The most notable ruin on Virgin Gorda is the old Copper Mine. In the island's North Sound is the high-end Bitter End Yacht Club, now a five-star resort.

The scoop on Norman Island

We own a catamaran in Tortola (Annie's Toy at Nanny Cay Marina)that is used for chartering with The Catamaran Company (when we're not using it!). The BVI is the greatest place to go for a sailing vacation!
We've been to Foxy's - never miss it when we're there and we visit Foxy's Taboo, too! Have you been there when the Blow Hole is working? What a mammoth wonder of water!
We have a trip scheduled in about a week and a half and can't wait!
Do you get to go often? We try to go at least 3 times a year.
Glad to know someone else enjoys it as much as we do.
