4 Reasons to get your cat a cat bed

Cats love cat beds

4 reasons to have a cat bed include:

1. Give your cat a place that is his own; where he can go to rest and get away from the other cats or dogs.

2. A cat bed gives your cat a safe place where she can feel secure.

3. Cat beds will help to keep your cat off your furniture. If you have a couch or chair that your cat sits on but you don't want them to because of the fur; put a cat bed there. You both win: they sit where they want to but you don't have the messy fur to clean up.

4. Having several cat beds throughout your house will make a cat very happy. One my be in a high location and the other low or on a favorite spot.

Cat Bed Materials

What cat beds are made of

Cats love comfort and warmth. A cozy cat bed that can keep them warm in the winter and provide a soft, comfortable nest. Cat beds are probably the best way to entice them off your bed, your couch and your overstuffed chair.

Cat beds come in a variety of materials and colors and styles so finding one that blends with your decor should not be hard. You can look for colorful cat beds in fun pet prints that add a touch of whimsy to the room or for cat beds with plenty of designer elegance. Of course, your cat will be more concerned with how the bed feels than what it looks like.

Cat beds are often lined with fleece which cats love. Many have covers that come off and can be washed in your washing machine. These are the ones I buy. I brush them first with a cat grooming brush to remove as much fur as possible before I put them in the washer.

Cat Bed Styles

Different Styles for Different Cats

Cat beds come in a variety of styles:

1. Cat sleeping mats
These are flat or nearly flat mats that can be put anywhere. Some can ever double as mats to place inside of your cat carriers.

If your cat doesn't respond well to being told to stay off the couch, try a nap mat. Nap mats are soft coverings for furniture that can attract your cat and protect your furniture. When company comes, put the mat away and you've got clean seating to offer guests.

2. Low walled cat beds
These have low walls.

3. Deep dish aka nest cat beds
Some cats like to hide almost totally and a deep dish bed, which has the high walls all around is the way they like them. These cat beds are warm as they trap the cat's body heat in.

4. Thermo cat pads and beds
These beds are great to keep cats warm all winter long. They are also great for Sphynx cats and other hairless cats. And they are really good for older cats or sick cats.

If you have a cat that spends time outside on the porch or in other chilly areas, you may want to consider providing him with one of these beds.

5. Wicker cat bed baskets.
These beds are stylish for your home. The only problem I've found with wicker is that many cats live to chew on the wicker.

6. Cat bed cozzies.

7. Other - Unique cat beds
These range from tents to condos.

How to entice your cat to use the cat bed

What do you do when a cat doesn't like the cat bed?

When you buy a cat bed, if your cat refuses to explore it, you may want to add a catnip toy or sprinkle loose catnip on the bed to attract his attention. Placing the bed in a cat friendly location will also make it more appealing. Cats prefer to nap hidden in a corner or off the ground.

If you place a bed on the floor, be sure to position it in an area that does not receive much traffic or if off the ground, put it on the end of you bed or couch, or an end table or platform. If your cat feels as though he can never let down his guard and relax, he won't want to nap in his bed.

Having several beds for your cat to choose from is wise. You'll probably find he'll use each at different times of the day. Place one where they might get some sun, another near the heater during the winter. They'll probably prove more interesting than your furniture.

My cat will sleep anywhere!! She lays down on the beds with us to keep warm, but you just move & she eaves so no idea where she sleeps otherwise. I've seen here near the radiator in the other room

What if they choose the old cardboard box over their new, pristine, extra-cosy bed? (It's happened more than once in our household!)

Yes, it has happened in my house as well. Cats do love boxes. However, all of my cats enjoy a bed of some sort too. Most like the deep dish kind or the pup tent one. A few of the heavier ones tens to like beds with low sides so they don't get too hot. Thanks for the visit. Bear hugs, Frankie

We are challenged in our household with picking out a cat bed ... you see ... for each cat bed we have brought home, Bandit the cat has christened each and every one ... saying MINE and now we are thinking the next one will be impervious to claiming.

Great ideas! I used one of those thermal-crinkle sacks to win over a feral neighborhood kitty. Now he's there each morning in the backyard. The sack kept him warm all winter.
