Make A Simple Green Effort

Let's Make A Difference!

It's likely that choosing to not "live green" today could eventually be looked at the same as being willing to accept a fuel inefficient vehicle; pretty much what the majority of the American public currently drive and buy, instead of having been in favor of a money saving, alternative-fuel hybrid.

This could spell trouble one day.

With American households throwing away trash that doesn't really go "away", our landfills are getting fuller daily as a result.

We know the truth of the decline of the traditional automaker who now "plays catch up" because of ignoring the emerging new trend.

They didn't stay relevant and competitive.

We don't have to walk in those same footsteps - trying to catch up environmentally, like the automakers are working so hard to do.

New Year's Eve "Green Factor" Fixings

There are lots of really great "going green" ideas you can incorporate.

From planning a menu featuring food grown in your region to - setting the table with your favorite Aunt Margaret's gorgeous, hand-me-down holiday linens... adding your silver, crystal and china elegant tableware instead of using disposable dining products - or you could give your guests spiffy, "green" New Year's Eve token gift bags filled with interesting ecologically aware goodies - and the best part is, because you're ahead of schedule, you'll save money... making it more cost effective for you, also.

The Green Poll

The Carlo office is located close to two popular Detroit suburban shopping malls which made it easy for Carlo and a couple Team helpers to poll shoppers, asking them about their likelihood to shop for things "eco-friendly green" this coming holiday season.

The Carlo At Your Service Productions pollsters estimate that roughly 70% of the 500 mall shoppers polled conveyed their desire to "more than likely" or "for sure" choose green products and services, if they knew for a fact and could honestly "see" their dollars going toward making a positive environmental difference.

When asked if they expected to spend a bit more for the "green factor", 55% polled said that as long as it was for a good cause that they'd do so knowing that just like everything else that's new, that when it catches on - prices will drop.

10 Tips on Taking Your New Year's Eve 2010 Party "Green"

Tip #1

After you've made out your guest list, it's time to think about your invitation. Start by letting your guests know that you're planning an eco-friendly, New Year's Eve party celebration.

Go paperless!

The personal touch of making a phone call is a very gracious way to go. Another upside to phoning your each guest personally is, it's a good time to share the attire for the evening and to ask about any special requests or important dietary needs.

Or, if it's more convenient for you - use technology... send your guests an email invitation.
Evite will have something that you'll like - check there.

... 5 - 4 - 3 - 2- 1... Happy New Year!

10 Tips on Taking Your New Year's Eve 2010 Party "Green"

Tip #2

Help save money on gas and reduce the carbon footprint of your guests - invite some of your favorite people in your neighborhood to attend your special New Year's Eve celebration. Encourage them to walk.

Ask your guests that live a little farther away to use public transportation, be it taxi cabs or public buses.

Or, suggest that they car pool with some of your other guests.

For those that you invite that live far away - play hotelier and ask them to spend the night.

Just remember to pre-plan all of your arrangements concerning your New Year's Day meals.

Things to Do List

1. Clean house
2. Start guest list

10 Tips on Taking Your New Year's Eve 2010 Party "Green"

Tip #3

China, Crystal, and Silver... going "green" goes pretty!

Luxury is living well. So, live well and use your "good stuff".

Avoid disposable products in favor of real plates, stemware and cutlery; an important step when you're going "green".

It's New Year's Eve, have fun and enjoy yourself!

Hire the people you'll need to wait on, serve and clean up after you and your guests.

And, if you have more guests than glassware - have your hired help get the extra glasses that you'll need.

Ring in the New Year in "green luxury"!

10 Tips on Taking Your New Year's Eve 2010 Party "Green"

Tip #4

"Lay low" on electricity and save energy - light candles instead, it's sexy.

Place candles EVERYWHERE!

Your guests will "oo-oo" and "ahhhh" when they arrive to see your porch light glowing with an colored light bulb (energy efficient, of course) and a trail of candles in sand-filled paper bags lining the walkway to your door - and, that's just the beginning!

Everyone looks better by candle light.

As the "lighting designer" of your New Year's Eve 2010 celebration - cautiously place candles in every room that you and your guests will use.
Don't forget the double stick tape.

And, don't forget to use non-scented candles on your food tables.

You don't want the scent of your candles to compete with the scent of your delicious New Year's Eve celebration meal.

New Year's Eve Ideas & Decorations

If you're single and you aren't planning to go out with a New Year's Eve date, invite a few of your gals pals over for a New Year's Eve pajama party.

Serve "comfort food".

Or, better still - order Chinese take-out.

Just make sure that you have a nice variety of food and lots of great refreshments.

Here's a different twist on New Year's Eve decorations...

After dinner, while everyone is sitting around in their "comfy-cozy's" (pajamas) - make a New Year's Eve scrapbook!

Or, you could decorate the plain muslin handbags with wooden handles that you'll find at a local arts and crafts store.

And remember, your guests are spending the night... you can finish making your handbags anytime after breakfast on New Year's Day!

Cap off your New Year's Day festivities with a movie matinee - which might be a nice alternative to watching football.

Tip #5

This tip is for the seriously ambitious host, or the host that wants to appears ambitious yet actually "cheated" - purchasing all of the necessary ingredients at the local gourmet market.

Serve "organic cocktails" made with fresh squeezed juices.

Buy your favorite vodkas, rums and whiskey's - and to spice things up a bit, buy a bottle or two flavored with citrus, fruit and pepper.

And, "do it up" by mixing your cocktails with the fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juices that you've squeezed yourself.
Or, take the easier way out and buy fresh sqeezed juices at your local gourmet speciality market.

Careful! Fresh juiced cocktails can be contagious!

10 Tips on Taking Your New Year's Eve 2010 Party "Green"

Tip #6

As energy prices go up... dial down the furnace and crank up the fireplace!

Most households shell out 50% to 70% of their energy bills on heating and cooling.

For every degree you lower your thermostat, you'll save 1% to 3% of your heating bill. Do the same thing in reverse with air conditioning.

5 New Year's Resolutions for a "Green" Business

Cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce your refueling costs!
  1. Use simple fuel-saving driving strategies to increase your fuel efficiency.

Trucks going 70 MPH use 50% more fuel than trucks going 62 MPH. They also emit 100% more carbon monoxide, 50% more hydrocarbons and 31% more nitrogen oxides. That's a lot of toxic emissions.

    Save fuel by:
Tuning it up - Regular tune-ups save you $$ - increase fuel efficiency, reduce maintenance costs and improve performance.

Take a load off - unloading some cargo will improve fuel mileage -significant results occur by dropping as little as 110 pounds.

Pumping it up - keep your tires pumped up to also improve gas mileage, tire life and breaking performance.
  2. Switch it up!

Pump the clean air fuel, bio diesel - Add a percentage of bio diesel to your fuel mix, as little as 5% will make an important reduction in toxic emissions as the bio diesel removes impurities from your fuel tank and engine, making for a cleaner burning fuel.
  3. Reward fleet drivers that don't idle and don't speed.

When your company saves money on fuel costs, share with your drivers as an incentive to be even more efficient.
Allowing an engine to idle 3 minutes can cause expensive damage thereby shortening the life span of the engine and increasing maintenance costs. Idling also consumes a lot of fuel - adding as much as 50% to fuel costs and shortening the life of the engine by 75%.

Reduce idling and reward your drivers instead. For long haul trucks, use shore power, inverters and generators as engine idling alternatives.
  4. Use environmentally friendly refueling practices by training and out-sourcing.

Fuel spills are costly, literally and figuratively. They cost companies their reputations and raise insurance rates, not to fail to mention that they are devasting to the environment. Spilling over five litres can cost as much as $20,000.00 to clean up. Spills also do damage to our ecosystems, water supply and community. When they aren't properly contained, the EPA or Environment Canada can suspend business until action is taken that they deem satisfactory.

Look for on site refueling services that use special training and technology systems for environmental safety. Follow ISO-conforming standards of safety and training that includes testing and certification. This will reduce your overall fuel costs.
  5. Keep good track of your fuel consumption.

After labor costs, fuel is the next highest operating costs for businesses in construction and transportation. Fuel is paid for and used yet hardly ever managed.

Paper and pencil is the cheapest to use, but is of course prone to human error and/or lost data. Spreadsheets are somewhat better, but rely on manual entry. Fortunately, today there is fuel management technology. Some of them use Radio Frequency Identification tags to keep and process detailed fueling costs. With these systems you can analyze fuel across your entire fleet, down to each vehicle or unit.
Use Fuel Management Online to resource fuel consumption.
4Refuel is the recognized leader in fuel management; that specializes in on-site diesel fuel delivery and fuel consumption.
This year 4Refuel will manage over 250 million liters for its 6000 clients across Canada.

10 Tips for Taking Your New Year's Eve 2010 Party "Green"

Tip #7

Pre-record your New Year's Eve musical selections.

From your "get this party started", up beat tempo hors d'oeuvre and cocktail hour tunes - to your more mellow dinner music - to cranking it up a tad, yet playing it softly to watch the ball drop... let all of your music come from your personal "techno deejay", your iPod.

Tip #8

Flowers are often doused with pesticides and shipped half way around the world. If you don't want to start the New Year out with that type of carbon footprint, try organic flowers or find out what flowers are grown locally.

Think about purchasing potted flowers that can double as parting gifts for your guests. Roses are always a wonderful and simple, elegant choice.

Sam's Club offers four varieties of fair trade, eco-friendly, cut roses from Ecuador.

10 Tips for Taking Your New Year's Eve 2010 Party "Green"

Tip #9

Throwing something away unfortunately doesn't mean that it's gone "away".

Each person creates around 4.5 pounds of trash everyday. Recycle - ask the Public Works Department in your city (or the Sanitation Department) to get involved.

Click here to get to the Earth 911 website, next click on "Act Locally" for instructions about how to get started.

Plastic will take around 1000 years to decompose in a landfill. And, it takes roughly 14 million trees a year to make 10 billion grocery bags.

Nat we're informed of this, composting and recycling your trash is an important necessity.

Hey Carlo,

If you weren't such an amazing woman I wouldn't keep coming back to see you. I realized what you were all about from the beginning and I believe the same. I only wish that everyone else could see things our way. You have so many great qualities on a personal level and they all transfer to the love of your profession and beyond. When clients receive catering and entertainment services from your company they always get more than they pay for. I know you work around their budget at times and still make big things happen. This woman has more than intelligence, she's got a heart of gold ! Carlo you deserve some personal recognition and all the compliments you get. Keep up all the great work you do :)
