Waltzing with Hurricanes

Everyone seems to know  that Jim Caviezel is Catholic, a factor that  seems to have been extremely important in  helping  him get through one of the most difficult acting situations ever.

His portrayal of Jesus in the Passion of the Christ seems to have moved  the world in a new way, a stroke of brilliance on the part of Mel Gibson.

There are other  Catholic celebrities, each doing  their own little bit, perhaps to much less effect, but nevertheless doing an outreach of some type.  We bring  them to you here.

Can a person oppose the Church and still be Catholic?

Big question with celebrities!

Some like Madonna were born Catholic, and even mock Catholicism; others like Jim Caviezel make the Church a big part of their lives.

What do you think makes a person Catholic, really?

Tony Blair's Conversion
Some lawyers believe the 1829 Emancipation Act, which gave Roman Catholics full civil rights, may still prevent a Catholic from becoming prime minister.

Clauses in the Act state that no Catholic adviser to the monarch can hold civil or military office.

Mr Blair's conversion will be controversial in the Catholic community because as an MP Mr Blair voted for abortion at up to 24 weeks which was publicly condemned by the late Cardinal Thomas Winning of Scotland. He also supported civil partnerships for homosexual couples.

Brett Favre, Catholic Hero
Earlier this month, legendary Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre announced his retirement after seventeen years in the NFL. He walked away holding most of the major records at his position, and as much as any athlete of his time he attracted not just admiration but veneration, inspiring even a "Packers Prayer" ("Our Favre . . . Hallowed be thine arm"). Favre has become a football deity, but he has also achieved the status of an exemplary American Catholic.

This all seems pretty sedate for the man whose work with a Gibson Les Paul led counterculture enthusiasts to declare on subway walls that "Clapton is God," the man "adopted" by Muddy Waters and commissioned to carry on the legacy of the blues. But his road has seldom been smooth.

A self-described Catholic peace activist, opponent of abortion and student of Catholic social teaching, Sheen often says he owes a spiritual debt to Dorothy Day, St. Francis of Assisi, Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Jesuit Father Daniel Berrigan and the late labor leader Cesar Chavez.

Bono says U2 Song inspired by Mary
U2 Song "Magnificent" from new album "No line on the Horizon" inspired by the Blessed Virgin Mary

In a recent Rolling Stone interview Brian Hiatt quotes Bono as saying "Magnificent was inspired by the Magnificat, a passage from the Gospel of Luke in the voice of the Virgin Mary that was previously set to music by Bach. "There's this theme running through the album of surrender and devotion and all the things I find really difficult," Bono says. "All music for me is worship of one kind or another."

Joe Garagiola

Joe Garagiola %uFFFD A man of great humor and deep faith - Catholic Online
Joe said that he heard Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen say on television one evening that in a family, if you want to ask your parents for something you go first to your mother. Joe said that after he met Archbishop Sheen and they had become good friends, he told him how much that advice meant. Archbishop Sheen said that he was simply passing on what the gospel story about the wedding feast at Cana told us. The servants told Mary that they had run out of wine, she told Jesus and then told the servants to do as Jesus instructed. She knew he'd listen to her request and, Archbishop Sheen told Joe, that's the lesson for us - talk to Mary first.
