Litter is Litter. What's Up?
There are many types of cat litter available. Originally cat litter was just sand or garden dirt that was brought into the house in a box for the cat. Then clay litter was created and invented. Clay litter trapped more smells and it wasn't as loose so wasn't tracked through the house as easily.
In the 1980s, clumping cat litter was invented. Now owners didn't have to dump the entire box, but could just scoop the litter out as it clumped around the cat urine. Fecal matter was scooped on it's own. Smells were reduced even further and cleaning the cat box was no longer such a chore.
Then came silica crystals. Some cat owners worried about their cats ingesting the silica. The silica certainly had less dust and was easy to clean.
Owners continued to be concerned about their cats potentially eating the cat litter. Also, there were concerns about the environment. Cat litters started being made out of corn and wheat and even recycled newspapers!
So What Should I choose?
- Sand or dirt: cheap, easy and quickly available. BUT it doesn't absorb oder and it tracks easily
- Basic Cat litter: Inexpensive. Less likely to be tracked through the house. BUT lots of cleaning and the box can smell. Dusty.
- Clumping litter: Easy to clean, less oder. BUT cats can track it through the house easier. Dusty. Maybe harmful if ingested.
- Crystal litter: Easy to clean. Low smell. No dust BUT maybe harmful if swallowed. Crystals roll everywhere. Cats may not like walking on it.
- Wheat Litter: Much like clumping litter but more environmenally sound and safer if ingested. BUT there is more cat oder. Tends to expensive. Dusty.
