Cats...Angels Among Us

Let's face it...cat lovers are passionate about their cats!

From the moment they enter our homes, our feline companions never fail to bring joy, laughter and love to our lives. Of course, they also manage to shed all over our carpet and spread litter throughout the house! How is it such a tiny creature can make such a mess? But we love them anyway, and at least we don't have to take them out for a walk in the freezing rain or blazing temperatures!
Travis & TreyOur house has been completely taken over by our two newest angels, Travis & Trey. We were blessed to adopt them last Thanksgiving from a wonderful organization called Angels Among Us. In addition to taking over our house, they have taken over our hearts as well!

Angels Among Us Pet Rescue Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to rescuing dogs and cats from high-kill shelters in north Georgia. They operate through a network of foster homes in the north metro Atlanta area. Their efforts are funded by tax-deductible contributions from compassionate people and organizations who care and want to help make a difference... one pet at a time. Gone, but not Forgotten

Before Travis & Trey, we were "owned" by EZ and Rocky. We adopted our first kitten, EZ (pronounced "easy") in the fall of 1991. Since it was football season, I suggested naming him after UGA quarterback, Eric Zeier. My husband had never had a cat, so I thought it would endear him to the new kitty. As it turned out, he would have loved EZ regardless of his name! He was a beautiful, white, long-haired, half Persian kitty with a "regal" air about him...he basically ruled the household, and he knew it! Two years later, we adopted Rocky, a little, sweet gray tabby kitten. He loved us, but was a little afraid of others. While EZ met visitors at the door (so they could tell him how beautiful he was), Rocky ran for cover. Most of our visitors never even saw him and some questioned whether we actually had two cats. Rocky was healthy right up to the end, but had a seizure at 15 years of age and never recovered. EZ "owned" us for 18 years and gave us such joy... we lost him last summer after a long illness. We miss them both.

One of my first attempts at painting was of my two "boys." It turned out looking a bit like folk art (which is not my usual painting style), but I loved it anyway and have used it on a few of my cards.

What's in a Name?

type=textMost of the time, a cat's name tells more about their owner than about the cat itself. For example, if you're a sports fan, and want something different, you may name your cat Chipper, after Chipper Jones, the Brave's 3rd baseman. Our cats' given names are Mickey and Austin; but before we even made our decision to start the adoption process, a stipulation my husband made was that he wanted to pick the names of our newest family members. You see, he's a BIG sports fan and, since we were in the middle of basketball season, he decided to name them after our two best players...Travis & Trey. Wonder how those two big ball players would like knowing that a couple of little bitty kitties were named after them?

The largest pet insurer in the U.S., Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), releases annual rankings of its customers most popular cat names, which is gathered from 475,000 policies. For 2010 (based on information from 2009), the 10 most popular cat names were: Max, Chloe, Bella, Oliver, Tiger, Smokey, Tigger, Lucy, Shadow, and Angel.

Simon's Cat

What is Simon's Cat?

While checking out the cat videos on YouTube, I discovered this great series. If you're a cat lover, you'll totally relate to the cat behavior portrayed in them.

Simon's Cat is a charming, yet mischievous cat that lives with Simon. He made his first appearance online, in a film called 'Cat Man Do'. Since then he has also appeared in his own books, game and comic strip.

We rescued our first cat in 1991, too. Only had dogs 'til then. She's gone now, but currently we have 3 cats - all adopted. I love your painting of EZ and Rocky, such beautiful 'boys'. I'm wondering if you've painted your two new angels yet. Great lens!

I enjoyed 'meeting' Travis and Trey. What fun. Reminds me of two cats (sisters) we got from the same litter who were the 'opposite' of yours -- all black. They were known as AJ (for Active Jumper) and TC (The Cat)... LOL. Love cat stories!
