Cat's Body Language translated

Are you having trouble reading your cat's body language? Have a look at the guidelines below and have a go at translating the ever confusing language of "Cattish" into "English"!

Is your cat rolling around on it's back? Well, that could mean one of two things. Either your kitty wants a few belly rubs, or she is ready to attack you with a painful series of bunny kicks. You should be able to tell the difference, but if not, folded back ears and whiskers are a good sign your cat is feeling threatened. If I were you, I'd leave kitty to her own devices for a while!

Is your cat rubbing around your legs? Congratulations! Your cat loves you! Well, that, and it is interested in claiming you as one of its many possessions. Head bonking and rubbing is common when a cat wants to mark its territory. By leaving his scent all over you, he makes you his own. Don't you feel honoured?

Is your cat licking and biting your hand? I know, this can hurt sometimes. However, licking and soft biting are very common in cat play. The licking part is also linked to grooming and bond creation. However, if your cat gets rough, don't be afraid to show him where to draw the line!

Is your cat wagging its tail? In this way, cats are quite different from dogs. A stiff, high held tail means that your cat is happy, but a mid high to low wagging tail is definitely a sign of inner conflict. You may see a cat wag its tail when it is watching a bird outside, or when it is ready to pounce, for instance. A twitching tail, on the other hand, is a sure sign of aggression and anger. Keep at least a meter's distance if you see that tail twitch!

Is your cat looking excessively puffed up? Look out! Your kitty is terrified and probably pretty upset as well! You'll often see this kind of body language between rival cats, or if your cat sees an animal it finds threatening.

Is your cat kneading your leg as if it were pie dough? Your cat is doing a whole bunch of things! He's marking you as a part of her territory, while showing you affection, AND demonstrating curiosity about you. This kneading action is very often accompanied by purring, and has the original purpose of releasing milk from the mother cat's breast.
