Cats should stay indoors

Ranked #2,330 in Pets & Animals, #60,299 overall

HERE'S WHAT I THINK

An indoor cat is safer, lives longer and can enjoy an active and happy life.

As our neighborhoods become more congested and filled with traffic and our homes spread out more into areas where there are animals such as coyotes, it's safer for cats to live their lives indoors. When we adopt a cat we can take charge of their environment, their playtime. exercise and behavior and control the cleaning of their litter boxes.

We can let our cats enjoy the outdoors, fresh air, grass under their paws, in different ways and still keep them safe.

Cats who go outdoors run the risk of being hit by cars, being terrorized by larger animals or becoming the victims of humans who dislike cats. Many owners know what it's like to suffer the loss of a cat. They can get into toxins both natural (poisonous plants) and man-made. We're living in different environments than we were years ago and pets today have less likely to be able to go out into the world and fend for themselves.

In many cases it's possible to give them tastes of the outdoors with enclosures and/or walks on a leash. We can see to it that they'll live longer, healthier and happier lives indoors.

The SPCA (The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is among the many animal welfare groups who advocate not only keeping cats indoors but getting more than one cat, meaning a feline playmate for your indoor cat. We found that our Siamese became much calmer and happier when we followed our vet's advice to "Get your cat a cat."

The whole family is very happy and another cat has "a forever home." Your ability to keep your cat(s) entertained in order to keep behavior in check is one of the many things to consider before adopting a cat. This can be an issue of time as well as finances.

ID indoor vs outdoor, still the same

Currently we walk one of our cats on a leash with his harness. One of our cats is a rescue and she has no interest in going outside. They're all microchipped and they all get flea treatment. They all have their vaccinations. These are decisions that my husband and I have made. They go to the vet and occasionally the whole gaggle of us will go visiting a friend or family member. There's always a chance that one of them could get outside and I couldn't imagine letting them go without identification.

Sadly where we live we see our share of LOST CAT flyers and in the past several months we've seen three cats who've been hit by cars in a few miles of our house. That really reminds me not to complain about cleaning out those litter boxes.

We're planning to put up an outdoor enclosure to see what they think. We'll report back and let you know what they do and don't like. They each tend to have preferences about everything.

Walk Your Cat: The Complete Guide

Walk Your Cat: The Complete Guide : Kindle Edition

"Walk Your Cat: The Complete Guide is written for indoor cat owners who want to give their cats access to the outdoors by taking them for walks on a leash. While it is often believed that cats can't be leash-trained, Walk Your Cat shows that taking your cat for a walk does not have to be a drag.

"This book is unique in that the authors have developed a thorough, easy-to-follow approach to walking cats that is solidly grounded in the current scientific understanding of feline behavior. Following their approach, you can allow your cats to enjoy a full range of natural behaviors while on walks, making their lives richer and healthier.

"But, Walk Your Cat is more than just a training guide. Getting to the heart of feline behavior to show you how cats can be leash-trained, the book offers readers a new window into the inner lives of their cats--as well as insights into the important and natural role that walks on a leash have to play in the life of the modern indoor cat. We're seeing more and more lost cat and missing dog flyers around every day. It's heartbreaking. A flyer was left on our doorstep yesterday as a family was going house to house asking about their lost four-year-old golden retriever. "She knows her name and she's very sweet," the flyer said. "And she has a microchip ID."

Our cat loves walking on the leash and we feel pretty hip out there doing it. Be unconventional. Be a hep cat. Maybe you'll pass someone walking a ferret and you can wink at one another. ;-)

Lost Pet Flyers, Templates and Suggestions

Lost Cat? Does your cat have a microchip? Mention it on the flyer

When we adopted our kitten, we got him from a woman who was creating Lost Cat flyers because her son had left their screen door open for a second and our kitten's father cat had run outside! She was upset but still was there to meet us and give us our new kitten. That's all it takes. Just a second. It must be in the genes, because this cat, now three years old is a real Houdini, escape artist! He loves walks on the leash the most. He loves his window perch, the bird feeders outside the window.

He's the one who's the most ready to run out the door. We had to get a different type of walking jacket for him because he's very exuberant when walking and can wriggle out if he sees something he's interested in.

Cats should stay indoors

Loading

Yes, you're right!

Oosquid says:

I keep my cat indoors because I know what it is like both to lose a cat to traffic and have a cat badly injured by traffic. There is no doubt that it is dangerous out there.

But there are other points of view, which I respect. Someone who allows their cat out is not necessarily unconcerned, they just think a cat deserves freedom. I can see their point, but would not take the risk myself.

Jadelynx says:

It is safer and healthier for a cat to live indoors. I have seen too many outdoor cats hit by cars or hurt in fights with dogs or other cats.

No way, Monkeybrain!

Cat enclosures, outside sanctuaries, Catios : Catoriums

An indoor kitty can still feel the grass under his paws!

Ellen DeGeneres is said to have one that's really great. Let kitty outside in safety and style becoming king of his forest. When possible, a cat may have the best of both worlds, including a safe taste of the outside world. It might be large or small.

You can call it a catio, an enclosure or give the space a more personalized name, maybe Howard's Hideaway or BooBoo's Bird Watching Station. an outside space can not only help your cat psychologically and physically but it can be fun for you to build and furnish. Please see site(s) linked for full details and other models that may be available.

Some items described may go out of stock temporarily.

Some structures (see diagram) are impressive, offering the height and running space that cats crave with plenty of room for toys and perching. Kittywalk Outdoor Net Cat Enclosure for Lawns Hideaway (Black): -1 three sided enclosure (36"D x 48"L x 48"H) with a 6" lip -1 enclosure (46"D x 48"L x 96"H) -1 tunnel (12'W x 96"L x 15"H) -1 small tunnel (12"W x 64 "L x 15"H) -1 4-step stair (12"W x 32"L x 46"H) -1 access end cap (12"W x 12"L x 14"H) -9 adjustable shelves -12 planks of cedar for the floor -1 door (24"W x 60"H) -1 door (24"W x 36"H) -Pliers, fasteners and instructions.

All outside cat enclosures by The Cat's Den are designed to prevent escape, while keeping your cat safe and healthy. Fence systems sometimes allow an intrepid cat a means to escape, either through a gap at the bottom of the fence or over the top of the fence. Creating a perfect closed system, the Cat's Den stays away from wooden structures to make the enclosure more attractive. Using a thicker wire for the mesh, the enclosure is able to support itself. Only the larger enclosures will need a little bit of support. The Cat's Den uses galvanized mesh that has a 2" x 2" mesh. By using galvanized mesh, the rust factor is eliminated.

Cedar wood is used for the flooring and shelves, to eliminate rotting. The Cat's Den is a long term investment that will not need any maintenance to remain a perfect place for your cat for many years. The tunnels are designed in a way so that they can be attached to any part of the enclosure very easily, creating a fully enclosed cat run. More robust than an open top fence system resting on the ground, the shape of the tunnel is built to withstand a great deal of pressure on it.

For example, if a dog jumps on a tunnel, it will support the weight. Also the peak of the roof will assist in allowing the snow to fall off the run. They were designed 12" wide as to allow two cats to pass each other with perfect ease. The Cat's Den was not only designed to look attractive in your yard but also to go with you when you move. With the clip remover, the enclosure can be easily disassembled, moved to a new location and re-assembled using new clips.

Build a scratching post for your cat

Recycled materials make you and your kitty happy

How to Make a Cat Scratching Post
from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Can't find just the right scratching post for Kitty? Build her own out of scrap materials.
Steps
  1. Decide on the measurements of the post before beginning. The post must be stable, for if it tips easily, Kitty may find it to be unsuitable for continued use. The model in the picture measures 28" tall, and the base is about 18" by 12". The post needs to be, at minimum, the length of Kitty plus a couple of inches for her stretch.
  2. Use a 4x4 post or 2-2x4 pieces attached together, and cut to the length needed. Set this aside for a moment.
  3. The base on this model has two layers. The first layer is made by setting 3-12" sections of 2x6 side by side. Cut 2 sections of 2x6 to match the width of the first layer (16.5" as 2x6 are in truth 1.5" by 5.5"). Place these 2 sections of the second layer on top of and parallel to the first layer. Attach the top layer to the bottom with wood screws. This makes for a heavy and stable base.
  4. Cover the base with your scratch material, something along the lines of Berber carpet or AstroTurf. Natural rope, like sisal, is nice, but takes a while to wrap tightly. A manual staple gun is perfect for this project, but roofing nails and flat tacks are also good choices.
  5. Place the post in the center of the base. Attach the post to the base by using one screw on each face of the post.
  6. Cover the post with your scratch material, and attach as described for the base.
  7. Attach a favorite toy, or something dangly and irresistable, to the top to entice Kitty to get to know the new post.
  8. Now, if you want a double-fun, and double-duty scratching post, attach some old brush heads or something similar about Cat's Eye level on the post. These are perfect for some awesome Feline Facials!

Video
Tips
  • Scrap materials are everywhere! Check with neighbors or friends, or on the streets on trash day.
  • You can find all manner of throw-aways at home construction sites! Don't take anything or even look around without asking the builders first, and always be careful around the site.
  • Rub catnip on the post to make it even more alluring.
  • For declawed cats, they still have the urge to "scratch" and they can enjoy a post such as this.

Warnings
  • Make sure staples, screws, and other tackings are not exposed. They are unlikely to injure kitty in any case, but it's always better to be safe, and besides, you want your work to be as neat as possible.
  • If using staples, you can lightly hammer the staple on down flat to the surface, as a staple gun does not always push the staple as flat as possible.
  • All the wood will be covered, but as a precaution, you can do a light sand on the wood. Sometimes you'll find a long splinter or two.
  • Use your eyewear and gloves. Accidents always happen when not expected, and can be prevented.

Things You'll Need
  • A section of 4x4 post, or 2 2x4 pieces attached together
  • Pieces of 2x6 or similar
  • Wood Screws
  • Staples, Tacks, Roofing Nails, or similar
  • Hammer
  • Saw
  • Appropriate screwdriver
  • Stiff Carpet (like Berber) or AstroTurf
  • Protective Eyewear
  • Work Gloves

Cat, You Better Come Home

Garrison Keillor

What happens to an uppity cat when she gets a taste of the "good life"? When Keillor does the spinning, the tale takes a slyly farcical turn, like the best of his Prairie Home Companion radio skits. Bouncy, syncopated verse (adapted from one of Keillor's folksongs) tells of Puff's rise and fall as "the Number One TV cat-food queen" at the same time that it wryly mocks the one-sided relationship between haughty feline and supplicating owner. Feeling underappreciated, Puff departs in a huff to seek her fortune, leaving the despondent narrator wailing, "CAT, YOU BETTER COME HOME."

Johnson and Fancher, who previously collaborated on Jon Scieszka's The Frog Prince, Continued, play up the details of Puff's transformation. She is all Hollywood feline femme-fatale, stretched out on a divan in a mink boa, or surrounded by her entourage ("A swimming instructor, and a butler named Bruce/ And a ballet coach, and a German masseuse"?the swimming teacher is a be-goggled octopus, while the butler is a formally attired bloodhound bearing a bowl of goldfish atop a silver tray).

The rich, honey-toned paintings accentuate the humor with slightly skewed perspectives; intermittent blocks of text are decorated with cartoonish sketches. Young readers may miss some of the references in the text and the art, but ailurophiles will rejoice. All ages. -- Amazon

"With two moving targets, the Tick Tock Teaser will bring out the predator in our cat. It is very important for indoor-only cats to get mental and physical stimulation."

The Incredible Cedar Teaser Cat Toy : Eco-Friendly : Tick Tock Teaser

Seen on Martha Stewart Show

The Incredible Cedar Teaser Cat Toy

The Incredible Cedar Teaser is an eastern red cedar cat and mouse pong toy. It is 12" long by 6" wide and 6" tall. It has been finshed with 3 coats of clear satin polyurathane (same stuff used on wood floors). Cats really love this toy and 3 can play at once because there are 3 mouse holes!

Here's how it works....

The cat or cats can see the ball from the side and front holes. Once the ball begins bouncing around inside the box, they get excited and put their paws into the hole and try to capture the mouse.

We've seen cats roll on their back and put a paw into each hole and run away get into an attack stance, and then pounce at the ball, knocking it all the way to the back of the box.

The bottom of the box is sloped and cupped so that when the cat removes its paw the mouse always returns to the front to torment the cat.

Each of our red cedar scratchers is handmade by a skilled craftsman, so the photograph is representive of the specific style. Your unit will not look exactly like the one shown, but will be close to its measurements and style. Each piece is a unique work of art!

This item is environmentally friendly:
This item is made from a real tree, with its bark removed. It is 95% biodegradable and therefore better for the environment than standard commercial cat trees. It is 100% natural, solid cedar, no particle board, plywood, carpet, adhesives, etc. It has not been sealed so it still releases a wonderful ceder scent.

Member of the Family What would I do without you, My Precious, furry friend?... Part mischief, but all blessing, And faithful to the end! You look at me with eyes of love; You never hold a grudge...

You think I'm far too wonderful To criticize or judge. It seems your greatest joy in life is being close to me...

I think God knew how comforting Your warm, soft fur would be. I know you think you're human, But I'm glad it isn't true...

The world would be a nicer place If folks were more like you! A few short years are all we have; One day we'll have to part... But you, my pet will always have A place within my heart.

My 6 cats are indoor only. Then I have a colony of feral cats that are outdoors only. Over the years I have had feral cats turn friendly and I either keep them or find them a good indoor only home. I have an outdoor enclosure for two of my indoor cats that like to go outside. I have heard the word "catio" used to describe an outdoor cat patio. Great lens!
