- Mr. Cole half of that does not even matter in intelligence. More likely to have diseases? That is not in a dogs nature. They do not wash themselves by licking themselves. They used to wash in streams or lakes. Killing cats? First of all that could only apply to large dogs. Breeds such as chihuahuas could not harm a cat. Even the ones that do do it because they used to be hunters. They hunted for food and since it is much weaker they see the cat as a thing that they can hunt.Weight has NOTHING to do with it so lets ignore that. Dogs eating their own vomit? Well a dog isn't spitting our its own hair every couple of hours.

- I have a ryme about cats :D. My cat sat on a hat and fell on a mat, the mat bent and went, down and over the bed. It landed on a dog, who cried out yelp! The cat laughed with so much guilt that the dog went crying out the door!

- Im am outraged, how can you think dogs are smarter than cats. Dogs are nothing like cats since dogs are more likely to have diseases than cats since they stay clean and healthy unlike dogs which in true fact, dogs eat there own vomit :P. yuk gross! Cats are more cudly than dogs since they are smaller, easier to carry round and weigh less, way less than dogs do since they can grow very big. Dogs are cat killers and i believe that dogs should be kept in remote areas away from cats. Even though it is natures own making that dogs chase cats, well i disagree it should be changed. Dogs and cats should be separated from each other. As we know today cats are running scared from the horrible beasts "dogs". Cats need to be free from danger and dogs are a very big threat to cat kind. It is so with my opinion that dogs are dumber than cats, since cats are smarter than dogs. If you have any comments id suggest you leave a comment to explain your story.

- Some people say Napoleon (Bonaparte I 1769-1821) was a 'cat hater' - not true! He simply didn't have time for a pet cat, when he was ruling an empire. Cats like to think from a comfortable seat - like someone's lap - whereas Napoleon was always pacing his study, or traveling or generally on his feet. Cats probably found him as incomprehensible as he found them! But this is different from being a cat hater; in exile on St Helena Napoleon I adopted a stray cat he called 'Ben'. He (Napoleon) had time to sit on St Helena, so here was a lap for Ben (to likewise sit on). This is not to say you can't keep a cat if you're trying to run an empire so much as to say: Napoleon's style and a cat's clashed and sometimes that can lead to misunderstandings. Mutual understanding is needed on both sides!

- dogs are smart but unfortunetly cats are much smarter why
they can use a toilet
they're independent
they groom and are very clean creatures
infact it has been scientifictly found that cats help your health and decrease illness
they're fury and relieve stress just by stroking them
they think befor doing something too

- this is something i learned cats are leaders dogs are followers and leaders ARE SMARTER!!!!!!!!!! leaders (which are cats) make their own choices and are independent it`s better to make your own choices then follow someone around and do the EXACT same thing as them (which dogs do). here is a saying. cats rule and dogs drool think hard isn`t it true if you think it`s false think harder, cats can also open boxes doors etc. some cats have amazing stories such as dewey the library cat and leo the maginficat. have you ever heard of a dog that lived in a church or library.dewey was one of the worlds most famous cat. still don`t beleive here is some more reasons.
–According to researchers, the feline has 300 million neutrons in its cortex, the “thinking part” of the brain. The canine, just 160 million.
–The cat brain and the human brain are much alike. Scientists at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine say cats and humans have the same kind of lobes in the cerebral cortex and the feline brain and the human brain function similarly, conveying data via many identical neurotransmitters.
And now for a less scientific fact:
–To do their business, dogs depend on humans to walk them. Cats, on the other hand, can learn how to pad into the bathroom and use the toilet. Furthermore, some feline fans claim their genius kitties have learned how to flush. (I must admit that my cats have never mastered this –but they are great with the litter pan and are smart enough not to use it if the thing is dirty. They sit and stare at it. Then they stare at me until I get the message. Pretty intelligent.
How are “cat smarts” defined by the experts?
Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, defines cat intelligence as the capacity for thinking, problem solving and reasoning. Intelligence also is measured by the ability to develop and use tools, learn new behavior and apply previously acquired knowledge. The bathroom/toilet business previously mentioned is just one example of the cat’s amazing ability to figure things out and learn new behavior. Here’s another: My big black cat, Tony, quickly learned how to open a big wardrobe closet by using tools (paws and claws) to work on the door and pulling . So, I secured the handle with a big bow. Tony watched. Tony reasoned. A little later, I saw him stand on his hind legs, grab one end of the bow and untie it.
I also have watched my cats figure out how to retrieve things from difficult to reach places. If one method fails, they don’t keep doing it, they learn from experience and try something else. Then if everything their furry heads can think up fails, they’re smart enough to meow at me to step in and help.
Intelligent felines are very successful at training their owners. My Gatito, for instance, has taught me to play fetch with him by dropping a small ball at my feet and staring up at me so sweetly that I just have to toss it for him to retrieve. Missy has trained me to sit down on the couch with her whenever she meows in a certain way and glances over her shoulder as if to say, “Time to pet me.” Of course, to be honest, I don’t know if Missy would take to jumping through a hoop like a talented circus dog , not even if I offered her a treat as a reward. But that doesn’t prove she isn’t smart. Hey, she knows she will get the treat anyway. So, why put forth the effort? Better to just sit down, purr and wash

- Eh... dogs are obviously smarter in every way. Some people consider cats smarter because for some reason there seems to be an idea that sociability is inversely proportional to intelligence -probably because within the context of human society, it's easier for a smart person to survive as a socipath and a dumb person has no choice but to conform-, and cats are, by all measures... well... self-centered, mean-spirited a**holes.
'Course, the exact opposite is actually true: social animals tend to be far more intelligent. Cats are smarter than dogs because they're independent? Well, amoebas are independent too... humans could never survive on their own in the wild. The point being?

She still runs to check on her every time she cries. She actually plays with my daughters toys instead of her cat toys. It's pretty funny when I come home and the foam alphabet mat is taken apart and pieces strewn all over the living room. Blessed!

- I think cats are smarter than dogs because they are more independent. Cats will be fine if you leave them alone for a few days, even if they are very attached to their owners. Plus, they are toilet trained. Also, it is proven that cat owners are smarter than dog owners. Follow this link for an article about it: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/7165164/Cat-owners-more-educated-than-dog-owners.html

When my dog had eye surgery, he got stuck with the cone on his head because he went behind the couch and didn't know enough to back out! Meanwhile my cats in the cone had it off and hidden. lol

- You have received some very passionate opinions here! How we rate intelligence is usually always flawed -- there are too many intelligences that cannot be measured. For instance: certain birds migrate over thousands of miles and return to the same location year after year. They can also "make a living" in whatever niche they call home. Can you measure this intelligence? Nope. I think each species is intelligent in its own way, maybe just not by the "human standard." The human standard would tell us that dogs are more intelligent because we can train them, they help us out, and they are social. But we need to remember there are many ways to rate intelligence. Okay, rant over! You have a fun debate here. :)

- In all honesty, I think cats and dogs are differently intelligent. Dogs are pack animals, which means that they can work with humans to learn various tasks. Cats are solitary hunters, which means they need to solve problems on their own (and I believe they've done much better at Skinner Box trials, but I can't seem to source that).

- I believe they are both equally as smart in different ways. A cat thinks independently, and will do things because they WANT to...not because they are told to do so. I've trained my cat to come to me and to lie down by making it a positive experience. I also make sure i never scold him using his name (Chester) because I don't want him to associate his name with anything negative.
He knows when he's doing something incredibly cute because of my response, and will do it over and over. Tell me that isn't smart...lol. He also lets me know exactly what he wants in a very verbal way...lol.

Our poor dog was just a nuisance and was very hard to train and didn't like our children. I guess it depends on each individual animal. Just like people, some animals are a pain in the butt. :)

- Lets look first at the definition of intelligence which not many are intelligent enough to know...
IQ is measured by how fast you learn and how well you retain that knowledge and last how well you use it...
A dog will take months to potty train,a cat well you put the litter box there and instantly it knows what its there for and trust me they know well how to use it. :)
My cats learn in seconds what a dog learns in months hmmm, even at only 2 months of age the cat knows how to use the litter box,at 2 months I don't even think a dog knows it exists.

- Cats are independant not "loners" because they do enjoy the company of their owners. Yet cats survive being alone better than dogs they will provide their own food if need be. Case in point my cat that killed 4 pet birds in a week even after we put a lock on the cage and hung it from the ceiling. Don't ask me how he did it. Someone mentioned that dogs always win in a fight, but put a cat up against an equal sized dog and see what happens. In fact I had a cat that scared the crap out of my full grown rottweiler who always had scratch marks on it's nose (from the cat). And I have always found it easier to train a cat than a dog. Once i tried to use dry kibble to lure my cat from under a bed and instead of coming out it used it's claws to scoop up a piece, instincts? I think not. Also yes cats LICK themselves but DOGS EAT THEIR OWN POOP that's gotta rank 10 on a scale of 1-10 stupidity. That and the time my dog brought home ANOTHER DOG'S PAW AS A CHEW TOY really has me siding with cat!!

- It's gotta be cats. They seem to have a knack for playing it cool. But Then again I'm a cat mommy so I'm somewhat bias.

- That is a tough one, but I agree with Margo that it can depend on the breed of dog. I think "dog people" highly underestimate cats just because their behavior is different though...cats are definitely smart little creatures!

- it's hard to say what smart means...cats are more independent then dogs...our feral cat (see my feral kitty lens) is the "smartest" cat I have ever run across, she amazes us how she figures everything out, the word NO is used once and that's it, she is amazing...5*

- It depends on the breed. I once read a study where they had taken several breeds and put a towel on their heads. Some got it off right away. The Afghan hound had it on its head an hour later! lol That is not a smart dog!
I disagree with you, but this is a 5 * lens!

- My friend is a dog person, and I'm a cat person, and we argue about this all the time, and now we are arguing about who has better survival skills. I think dogs' intelligence matches humans and apes better in the sense that they are easily trainable because their logic works like ours. But, I think cats are wild animals at heart and will always be so, and therefore has better survival skills and take much creativity on the human part to train because their motivations are different than dogs and humans. Cats are smarter than dogs when it comes to getting what they need to survive. In addition, cats are intuitive and independent, and if you ask my mother, the one with the independence needs not defend her intellect. On"Geniuses are of course the 'smarter' ones/people? Yet their I.Q. will most likely NOT give them the adaptation skills to survive the wild, 'streets.'" Most geniuses have to learn street smarts while most other people instinctively have that one licked naturally.

- I say that Cats are smarter than dogs, because cats have some special qualities. Such as
These are cute.
These are innocent.
These are fast.
They climbing on the wall and tree very easily.
These are related to the family of lion some how. ;)

- Yep, I agree to that! Cats are way smarter than dogs! That's why my cute Pomeranian told me last night and he held up and showed me an encyclopedia that he was reading that showed how cats are smarter than her! But my Pomeranian is cuter than any cats! I even have her photos put in my Pomeranian checks and show the world how proud I am to have her one of my daughter! Yey!

- My cat thinks she can type and play the piano. Or maybe she just pretends to be not-so-good at it to fool me in to thinking that she's not plotting to take over the universe.

- Cats every time. Dulcie knows her own mind, knows precisely what she wants and exactly how to go about getting it. When she wants to sit on my bit of the settee, she couldn't make it more obvious if she turned to me and said "Get up, I want to sit there, now you've warmed the cushion"
And what do I do? Why move of course! 1001cats.com
