Some breeds have herds that have become so small, that efforts are being made to keep the breeds from becoming extinct. Protecting these breeds from extinction, is important to maintain genetic diversity.

Milking Devon cattle, are an American breed, which are descendants of British Devon Cattle brought to North America in the 1600s. They are hardy, and are useful for milk, beef, and for use as oxen.
They are thought to be one of the most endangered cattle breeds in the world. Milking Devon Cattle are listed as "critical" by the ALCB. There are fewer than 200 animals registered annually in the United States.

Pineywoods cattle are listed as "critically rare" by the ALBC, with fewer than 200 animals registered annually in the U.S. Pineywoods cattle are descendants of cattle brought to American by Spanish explorers, in the 1500s. The Pineywoods cattle breed, survived only because a few families kept pure bred animals.

- Great lens. I have been around animals all my life, loved the photos especially the little belted Galloway calf, we do have them, and many Ayrshire also. Thanks for sharing. Blessed
