How Do I Remove Cat Urine from Concrete???

Removing cat urine from concrete is obviously a much more difficult task than removing it from clothes or carpet.  It's not as if you can take the affected area and throw it in the washing machine, right?   Concrete is porous, so that urine seeps deep down into the nooks and crannies, and when you think the smell has faded on its own, it rains and the fumes make a reappearance.  I've found three solutions to remove cat urine from your concrete.  Before doing anything, you should maybe plan to treat the whole area of concrete or use a black light to detect exactly where the urine spots are.

Man, if only that cat would pee where it's supposed to: the litter box!!!  For help with litter box problems, Visit this site!

Solution one: Good Ol' Vinegar

Make a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Pour it onto the affected area (s) and allow to air dry. Next use an enzymatic cleanser. These special enzymatic cleansers are formulated to degrade uric acid crystals found in cat urine. This is why any ol' cleaner won't do it. These enzymatic cleansers may have a 2 or 3 step process. With each step, use a plastic tarp to prevent the cleanser from being evaporated before it has a chance to penetrate the concrete and do its job.

Once the concrete is dry, the last step would be to use an oil-based sealant to seal in any remaining odor. If you think you'll ever want to have the area tiled, skip this step. Sealants and paint mess with the chemical makeup of thin-set mortar (the goop that attaches the tile to the floor).

Solution 2: TSP

Trisodium Phosphate (TSP). This product can be found in paint and hardware stores. It's a very strong chemical, so follow all safety precautions. Mix an ounce of TSP with a cup of water. Also add about a cup of cornstarch or flour. Spread the paste over the affected area and allow to sit for 24 hrs. Then take some water and cleanser and scrub with a brush. Rinse thoroughly. If all of the cat urine is not removed, try this again.

Avoid ever having to clean cat urine from concrete ever again!
