Catwings - a feline fantasy picture book by Ursula Le Guin

Catwings is an adorable and enchanting little picture book, that I picked up in my high school library, of all places. Written by the extremely renowned and award-winning high fantasy author, Ursula le Guin (best known for her Earthsea Quartet) this is an enchanting tale of the four winged kittens born to Mrs. Jane Tabby in a dumpster. The story is sweet, without being soppy, as the kittens face mistrust and danger, and the drawings are beautiful. This book is the perfect mix of everyday growing up, survival and family, all touched with fantasy.

It ends with the kittens flying away safely to a new home, and there are a few more little books afterwards that tell what happened next. It's a gentle and captivating little series, and the watercolour illustrations by Schindler are perfectly matched to the story, if a little sombre.

The entire Catwings series is comprised of four books - Catwings (A Catwings Tale), Catwings Return, Jane On Her Own and Wonderful Alexander and the Catwings.

The Catwings Series

All four books: the continuing adventures of the Catwings.

After the first book, in which the original four kittens are introduced and find their new home, they return to the city to visit their mother - only to find instead, a tiny black winged kitten, their little sister Jane. In the third book, little Jane - mostly mute after her terrifying early life - finds and rescues the (normal) kitten Alexander. "Wonderful Alexander" then goes on to help her learn to speak again. In the final book, Jane strikes out on her own and becomes an unwilling celebrity.

Through out the series, Schindler's delicate ink and watercolours make a charming, somewhat serious, appearance, and are well worth looking through for their own sake.

The Catwings were quite inspiring - they stayed in my head for years and I've occasionally tried to paint them...

This looks like a delightful book for kids (or for cat lovers, as you suggest). I didn't know that Ursula K. LeGuin wrote childrens books! I've read and enjoyed a number of her other books, including the Earthsea Trilogy (before it became a quartet!), The Dispossessed, The Left Hand of Darkness.

Cat Dreams

Cat Dreams

Amazon Price: $9.97 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now

Another children's picture book from the same writer and artist as Catwings, this is a charming ans somewhat sleepy book for younger children, with tranquil watercolor and gouache illustrations complementing the simple rhymes.

Both the story and text are simple: a cat's dreams are filled with kibble and cream, scaring away dogs, and climbing catnip trees. But when the dream turns nightmarish by a flock of squawking blue jays, the reality of a warm lap nearby is even better. Cat Dreams offers a satisfying read for cat lovers who can enjoy the tranquil illustrations, rendered in . Many of the elements of the animal's dream-a day when it rains mice, sleeping in a blue jay's nest-are revealed in the squares of the quilt on which the feline lies with such cozy charm (observant readers should also look out for a few catwings flying by). But the highlight of the book is the reinforcement of the conceit that humans somehow enrich a cat's life.

Cheek by Jowl

A collection of talks and essays on how and why fantasy matters, by Ursula K. Le Guin.

In these essays, Le Guin argues passionately that the homogenization of our world makes the work of fantasy essential for helping us break through what she calls ''the reality trap.'' Le Guin writes not only of the pleasures of her own childhood reading, but also about what fantasy means for all of us living in the global twenty-first century.
