So What ARE The Causes Of Reflux? (and how do *I* AVOID them?)
So you're in line at Mickey D's thinking "I wonder ... what are the causes of reflux, anyway?" You buy that Big Mac Meal (super-sized, of course!) and a couple of minutes later you're chowin' down on that big, yummy 'burger and fries! It's not long before you get the answer to your question, 'cuz now you're gettin' that ol' familiar sharp pain in your chest. Soon after, you feel a gas bubble comin' up ... but it's NOT gas! You find yourself gurgling up some pretty nasty stuff that tastes AWFUL and burns your throat EVEN WORSE!.
You've just experienced a bout of HEARTBURN and ACID REFLUX.
Most all of us have had this experience. In fact, over 60 million Americans have a heartburn/reflux attack at least once a month. 5% to 7% of us have chronic symptoms, which they call Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). The Causes Of Reflux - The LOW DOWN on why it won't STAY DOWN!
There's a bucket-load of reasons why you can get acid reflux, but to simplify things ...
... you can break down the causes of reflux into THREE basic groups ...which I'll just call "DIET", "LIFESTYLE" and "MEDS". Each group consists or several factors. But, regardless of which group or specific cause we're talking about, they all contribute to acid reflux in the same way ... by creating one or more of the following conditions:
- RELAXED MUSCLES of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This is the valve that allows food to enter into the stomach and keeps stomach contents from coming back up. If it cannot close all the way, acid can reflux back into the esophagus and burn the lining! NOT GOOD!
- INCREASED ACID production in the stomach. If your stomach produces more acid than it should, it is more likely some of that acid will seep back into the esophagus, with the same result as above. Again ... NOT GOOD!
- INCREASED PRESSURE on the stomach. Stuffing your stomach with food, or, conversely, squeezing your stomach by wearing tight clothes, will force the contents into the upper stomach, making it easier for some of it to slip past the sphincter into the esophagus. You got it .... DEFINITELY NOT GOOD!

The Causes Of Reflux - Garbage In ... Garbage Out! (or, in this case... "UP"!)
"DIET" - HOW you eat, WHAT you eat, and even WHEN you eat can all ...
... be causes of reflux in your life. Changing ANY of these habits can reduce or even eliminate your acid reflux.- EATING LARGE PORTIONS - Don't be a PIG! All that food sloshin' around inside just makes it easier for some of it to head north! If you're really hungry, then eat a small snack between meals.
- EATING JUNK FOODS - I don't need to tell you what those are, do I? But just in case, foods that are high in fat need to go! Spicy foods (Indian, Mongolian, Mexican, etc.) are a No-No for your Tum-tum! And, by the way, some otherwise healthy foods, such as citrus fruit or tomatoes, can be a reflux trigger because of the ACIDS in them.
- DRINKING JUNK DRINKS - DUH! If fatty, spicy and acidic foods can mess you up, what do you think fatty, spicy and acidic DRINKS are gonnal do to you? Sooo ... lay off (or at least keep it to a minimum) the alcohol, caffeine, sodas and citrus juices.
- EATING LATE - Putting food in your stomach and then lying down is gonna cause you problems! Just one more opportunity for 'lava' to 'erupt', if you know what I mean! - lol -
The Causes Of Reflux - Sorry! You just can't 'HABIT' your way!
"LIFESTYLE" - Even if we're eating and drinking right, there are still HABITS and ...
... BEHAVIORS that we've either made a part of our lives on purpose, or just do without really thinking about it, that can be unrecognized causes of reflux. They include:
- SMOKING - Believe it or not, smoking is STILL not good for you! - lol -. With acid reflux specifically, smoking can, among other things, increase acid secretion (not what we want), weaken the LES muscle which holds things down, and damage mucous membranes in the throat, already being damaged by your reflux.
- BEING OVERWEIGHT - Remember that bit about pressure on the stomach causing reflux? Well, if the stomach itself is causing the pressure because of how big it is, then you've got the same problem. The extra weight pushing on your abdomen can force the stomach contents back up into the esophagus.
- BENDING OVER after a meal - Same concept. Bending over creates pressure on the stomach, which can push food and acid back up.
- TIGHT CLOTHES - Shoving your extra large gut into medium pants? You're only fooling yourself ... and you're creating that same pressure I mentioned before. Tight pants, tight belt, tight pantyhose ... it's all the same. Lighten up and LOOSEN UP!
- LYING DOWN after a meal - I know that after a meal you can go into 'food comatose', but try to resist! "Aren't I relieving pressure by lying down?", you ask. Yes, but now GRAVITY is the culprit. Lying down after a meal is not much better than hanging upside down after a meal. You get the picture!

"MEDS" - There are various medications on the market that can ...
... be of real help to acid reflux sufferers. But there are other meds and medical conditions that can be causes of reflux working against you.- HIATAL HERNIA - A condition when the stomach bulges past the diaphragm and into the chest cavity. This causes the position of the stomach to change such that bile and food can more easily reach and bypass the sphincter.
- PREGNANCY - The growing baby in the womb can cause pressure on the stomach that can lead to acid reflux.
- PRESCRIPTION MEDS - Antibiotics, heart medicines, high blood-pressure medicines, narcotics, anti-anxiety meds and steroids are just a few.
- NON-PRESCRIPTION MEDS - These can include antihistamines and anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen. Also, somewhat surprising, are iron supplements and vitamin C!
