They are typically found in "solution", or limestone caves, where they are the most common speleothem. However, they may form in any type of cave where water enters that has picked up dissolved minerals.

Speleology and Caving
Speleology is the scientific study of caves and other karst features, their make-up, structure, history, life form, physical properties, and the processes by which they form and change over time. Recreational exploration of caves is properly known as caving, spelunking or potholing. The skills required for study are the same, connecting speleology and caving sometimes in the same terms.Speleology is a cross-disciplinary field that combines the knowledge of biology, geology, chemistry, meteorology and cartography to develop portraits of caves as evolving and complex systems.
What a Cave is...
A cave is a natural underground void large enough for a human to enter. In popular usage the term includes smaller spaces like sea caves grottos, and rock shelters.It is suggested by some people that a cave should only apply to cavities that have some part that receives no daylight.

Lechuguilla Cave - United States
Lechuguilla Cave is, as of August 2007, the fifth longest cave (126.1 miles) known to exist in the world, and the deepest in the continental United States (1,604 feet), but it is most famous for its unusual geology, rare formations, and pristine condition.
The cave is named for the Agave Lechuguilla, a plant found near its entrance. It is located in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. Access to the cave is limited to approved scientific researchers, survey and exploration teams, and National Park Service management-related trips. - Lechuguilla Cave was known until 1986 as a small, fairly insignificant historic site in the park's back-country. Small amounts of bat guano were mined from the entrance passages for a year under a mining claim filed in 1914. The historic cave contained a 90 feet entrance pit known as Misery Hole, which led to 400 feet of dry dead-end passages.

- [in reply to ] That was a great story that really made me laugh right out loud. Sounds a little nutty to rock climb at night, but with a headlamp all is well. They provide more than enough light for the darkness and your safety. Guess the police could figure that out well enough. Nice that they wished you well and went on their marry way...talking about your guys for day I'd imagine. Lol!

- Spectacular lens! I'm not a caver but used to be a rock climber. From your lens I can see that the world of the caver is just as beautiful as that of the climber. I went through this nutty stage years ago when I used to rock climb at night. My partner and I would follow crack systems up various cliffs in New Hampshire using headlamps to find our way. Once someone called the police on us. I suppose they might have thought that we were normal climbers who were in trouble. No one in their right mind would choose to climb at night.
The police used a loud speaker to ask us if we were ok. After assuring them that all was well, they just said "Enjoy your evening" and left. Gotta love New Hampshire, the "Live Free or Die" state.
