What is the CBT?

CBT (The Certificate of Basic Training) is exactly what the name suggests. It is Compulsory and forms the first basic steps in learning to ride a motorcycle.

The CBT certificate validates your Provisional Licence Entitlement for Category A - Motorcycles. Once issued the CBT Certificate is valid for 2 years.

It allows you to ride motorcycles up to 125cc. You must still display 'L' plates, must not carry passengers and cannot use the Motorway at this stage but it forms the basis of good riding to build upon for the future.

Your CBT is your first step into Motorcycle riding.

The CBT Programme

The CBT Programme is divided in to 5 separate Elements which you will be taught in order. Each stage builds upon a the previous learnt skills, and will end with a road ride for a minimum of 2 hours. If further training is needed it should be provided.

Element A - Introduction

Eyesight requirements: You must be able to read a number plate with figures of 79.4mm high and at a distance of 20.5metres.

Licence requirements: You must be the holder of a provisional licence for the appropriate category for a motorcycle or a moped.

An introduction to the background of the CBT will be given, together with an explanation of what to look for when purchasing protective clothing, and in particular how to choose and find the correct fit of approved safety helmet.

Element B - Practical on site training

This section deals with familiarising you with the vehicle controls and will show you how to carry out basic vehicle maintenance checks. You will also be shown how to take the machine on and off the stand.

Element C - Practical on Site Riding

This section deals with the set manoeuvres.

This covers:
  • Pulling away and stopping.
  • Ride in a straight line under full control
  • Bring the machine to a controlled stop
  • Ride the machine in a complete figure of 8
  • Turn the machine in the road by using a U-turn
  • Stop the machine as if in an emergency
  • Make controlled stops by using both brakes
  • Change gear correctly
  • Carry out a series of left and right turns under full control

Element D - Pre-ride Road Briefing

This section involves a pre ride Road Briefing and aims to prepare the rider in how best to deal with the potential hazards, road conditions and traffic found out on the road.

It will included an explanation of:

  • Your Legal Requirements
  • Vulnerability
  • Conspicuity
  • Road Surfaces
  • Use of Speed
  • Correct Following Distance
  • Attitudes and Road Rage Avoidance
  • Drink & Drugs
  • Weather Conditions
  • Reference to The Highway Code.

Element E - Practical on Road Training

This section is the practical on road riding. The Road Ride takes place in radio contact with an Instructor and this must be for a minimum of two hours during which time the trainee will encounter a variety of road and traffic situations and hazards. Such as; Roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, junctions, gradients etc. At the end of this session a CBT certificate will be issued if the trainee meets the required standard and the instructor feels that they may ride safely unsupervised on a bike up to a 125cc.

How much does it cost?

CBT's must only be carried out by DSA (Driving Standards Agency) Certified Instructors and must only be carried out at DSA approved training sites.

There are a few approved training sites for doing your CBT training in Cardiff.

Your CBT can cost from £110 to about £135 and normally includes the use of the motorcycle, fuel and insurance for the time you are training.

Most Training Schools will loan you a helmet and other protective or waterproof clothing for your training, so you don't need to supply your own. Unless you want to, of course.
