Very helpful information for explaining the proper use of CC images from Flickr.
  • OldStones Mar 30, 2012 @ 6:55 pm | delete
Great information. I was curious about the code Flickr supplies to share images. When you use this code the image links to the original owners image and also if you mouse over the image it gives the owners name and license info. Is this adequate attribution?
  • srsddn Mar 30, 2012 @ 10:23 am | delete
Thanks for this lens. It clarifies many doubts and helpful in using Flickr without any doubts.

This is a very useful lens and I appreciate you making this information clear for those who could be confused. But there is one point I'd love some clarification on if possible. I have always seen use of an image on Squidoo as "Commercial" in nature, as we are making $'s from the lens via ranking and/or sales (either for ourselves or for a charity.) Therefore I have never used a CC image on a Squidoo lens if the CC license did not specify that it was ok for commercial use. As you started above, non-commercial = "you're not selling the image or using it to sell something". Aren't we selling something when we use an image on Squidoo? I guess I remain confused about Squidoo policy on this point and would love a clarification if possible!

I'm using CC images from Flickr for all of my lenses. I almost find every relevant picture I need from that place. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks! Think I will need to keep coming back to this lens (bookmarked).
I've just started out on squidoo and like PamelaU's comment below, I'm struggling with correct use of images and now trying to make my own. This helps.
  • tjmaj1959 Mar 9, 2012 @ 9:43 pm | delete
Very useful. a little confusing, I'll be referring back to this lens.
  • chicandsavvy Mar 9, 2012 @ 5:53 pm | delete
Okay, bookmarking your lens because it helps. But, seriously, really stinks that it's getting so complicated to use my own artwork on my own lenses. I just do this for fun and donate to charity, and I'm behind a week on bootcamp. Can you sense the frustration? Politics is ruining the internet for people who just want to have fun.

  • PamelaU Mar 8, 2012 @ 11:55 am | delete

I just found flicker on the internet. And then I found this great lens with useful description :)
  • Angelgirl1976 Mar 6, 2012 @ 10:04 am | delete
I have read this twice now, the information is very useful. I suppose I use it as a kind of reference. I do find all this a little overwhelming but not all in a bad way I just take a little longer to get things on a level of understanding in my head if you know what I mean lol :) especially when it is new to me and I have never come across it before. But I love to learn new things, it makes life fun :)
  • MarionElodie Mar 2, 2012 @ 5:14 pm | delete
Thank you for this useful lens. I have never used pictures from Flickr as it was indeed quite confusing, but I'll consider it in the future, it's a great resource to find beautiful images.

I'm a little unclear about the aspect of giving credit to the owner of a Creative Commons licensed image without implying that the individual endorses my use of the image. In what ways could my use of an image imply endorsement by the owner? Is it necessary to ask the image owner for permission to use an image that is already designated as having a Creative Commons license?

Thanks for the info. After reading this post, I decided to delete the earlier photos that were downloaded from flickr (but had the license to copy etc) just in case it hasn't fully complied with the above. I instead went through the CC website for the photos. I just joined 4days ago, so need to do it right!

I read somewhere else (I think WikiMedia Commons??) to do the attribution like this:
    Photo | Artist_Handle | Website
    e.g. Photo | jimmiehomeschoolmom | Flickr.

Is this correct too? Or is ONLY the above suggested attribution correct, assuming the artist doesn't specify? And why?

First is this article up to date? So lets say it is. I would like to know following. If i embed flicker picture to my blog it will automatically link back to that photo or also can be if i link this photo back to the flicker photo page.. So should I write below that "Photo used under Creative Commons from ------" or its enough that clicking on photo will lead to the owners photo page.

I personally have no problem with people using my material - period. It is great to share - you're so right! It's great as you've pointed out, to have so many controls, but often these are bypassed via many methods - so at this stage, I'm going to ask a valid question: If we are prepared to put our photos up - we must be prepared for them to become public domain? I do love your recommendations for rule-keeping when using the photos of others though - thank you.

Great lens, problem is how do I upload a photo from the flickr module to the text/write module?
  • SquidooKimberly Apr 30, 2010 @ 9:56 am | delete
Benaidoo, you can download them to your computer and upload them to the modules that pull images directly to your computer. Then just label them appropriately. Easy! :)

  • KarenTBTEN Nov 9, 2009 @ 8:43 am | delete
Very useful -- I do have some CC pictures on Blogger, but not on Squidoo, as it is not as easy to link back. This should be helpful.

It must be one of those days.
It still as clear as mud to me. Good lens, but I don't think I had a coffee.
I will have to try Flicker myself.
I used another module for photo's which I thought was better.
Love to hear what others think of my BOOK lens. Its not going as well
    as I had hoped.
    Cheers from DOWNUNDER

Thanks this was very helpful. Found it on flicker on my own last night, but wasn't sure about the different uses. Still a little confused, but I'm sure once I use it a few times along with this lens it will all be clear and make looking for pictures much quicker.

  • WriteResearch Jul 13, 2009 @ 7:16 pm | delete
One somewhat tricky question is what constitutes "commercial" vs. "non-commercial" use. Creative Commons announced in 2008 that it was launching a research study of this issue, but I don't know if the study has been completed (or if so, what the study results were).
  • PepperAnn49 Jul 5, 2009 @ 11:32 am | delete

Kimberly, this is a really great guide on Creative Commons. It took me a long time before I understood that whole thing...wish I'd have seen this lens a lot earlier-lol! Thanks for taking the time to write this all up in "layman's language". I'm faving it so I can refer to it again...
  • Laniann Mar 8, 2009 @ 4:00 pm | delete

CandisLynn, once a license is changed it takes time for the change to filter through Flickr's API so it can be applied. It should work in a day or two.

Thanks for the great info.. I am a newbie and this was very helpful. I found some beautiful pictures attempted to post the links and realized I could not use them. This lense explains all I need to know.

Thanks so much for clearing all that up! Question for you: I am making a lens for a recent family brunch we had and I'm trying to add my Flickr photos to it via the Flickr module. I just applied the Attribution license to all my photos but it's still not allowing me to add them. Any ideas? Thanks!

great lens - so useful. i have a set of cc photos on flickr, and the licenses can get a bit confusing for some. i will definitely point them to this lens for clarity.
also, a great tool for searching cc photos on flickr is compfight.com - you can even specify commercial use or not.

Being new to this whole process, I really appreciate the clarification on how to properly use the flickr pics. Please explain how you loaded the pictures on this page (how I can load them on my pages) so they link back to the person who posted them. This is great. I am all about giving credit where credit is due!!!

    Hi Kimberly,

I love pictures in lenses, but I find this subject very confusing. Thanks for explaining it better. Hopefully I will have less trouble incorporating photos in my future lenses! Karen
  • rms Nov 1, 2008 @ 10:01 am | delete
Fabulous lens Kimberly! I've been using the Creativecommons.org search for commercial usage for a long time now. thanks for explaining all the differences!
  • EverythingMouse Nov 1, 2008 @ 9:47 am | delete
A really useful page which clarifies this tricky subject. Flickr is such a great resource for photos and most people are very happy to have you use their photos with a credit.
  • kab Oct 27, 2008 @ 11:09 am | delete
This is a page everyone using a flickr module should have to read! People on flickr don't always understand all this either, and some freak out even if you are using it properly, and people's definitions of "commercial use" vs "non-commercial use" are not always the same.
  • EditionH Oct 27, 2008 @ 7:55 am | delete
Thanks for putting this up ! very helpful
