CCTV Security Cameras – Invasion of Privacy?

Ranked #10,360 in Home & Garden, #134,381 overall

Where do you draw the line?

While CCTV security cameras do a good job of deterring criminals and helping to catch them - and we have all come to expect them in shops - many people feel they are an increasing invasion of privacy. The problem has arisen because so many businesses are now using them to virtually spy on their employees and catch them out wasting time in their cubicles by going to Facebook or texting messages to friends - or even nodding off.

Are there restrictions?

CCTV CameraAdditionally, many countries now have CCTV security cameras on their street corners and other public places and some of these are hidden, so people are beginning to feel that they cannot set foot outside their door without being on candid camera, or wondering if they are which is just as bad. For the moment there are restrictions on the use of hidden cameras, but what about in the future? No one can say for sure if such legislation will be gradually withdrawn, meaning a total lack of privacy outside their own home for everyone.

Many employees and others feel that they are being inappropriately mistrusted and that leaves a bad feeling, contributing to animosity and hostility. Apart from that it can make even the most trusted employees feel nervous knowing there is a camera aimed at them all day.
While the use of CCTV cameras is supposed to reduce the crime rate, this is not proven and many studies have, in fact shown that it is not the case. Criminals simply cover their faces and go ahead with their law-breaking activities. They are actually no replacement for intervention by a law enforcement officer.

Like many other things security cameras have a great potential for abuse and misuse. When people have access to such products they can post supposedly funny footage on such places as YouTube without permission from those who have been caught on camera. This can be both embarrassing and humiliating to them, and in many cases can ruin their reputation.
