How to Add Impact to CD Sleeves
CD sleeves are probably the cheapest commercial case in the market right now. CD sleeves are just like LP sleeves, but the difference is that it's smaller because the CD sleeves are obviously used to contain CDs. Another distinction is that some CD sleeves may have tuck flaps on one side. This is because the CD has a smooth surface compared to vinyl and because of that, it has a tendency to slip if the CD sleeve has no tuck flap. There are CD sleeves that are made of plastic or Styrofoam but the most common are the CD sleeves that are made of cardboard paper. Cardboard CD sleeves are preferred by many artists and companies who are environment conscious since they are sustainable and they cost less in shipping. Many companies also prefer them because they are so thin that they can be inserted in books and other promotional items.
The only downside of CD sleeves is that they do not look as sophisticated as other standard CD cases. CD sleeves are usually used for promotional items and freebies that they start to look too commercial and less classy. But the good news is that there are actually ways where you can make CD sleeves look more appealing!
The best way to do that is by making a creative artwork. Yes, a creative concept and artwork can definitely add oomph to your standard CD sleeve. The good thing with CD sleeves is that the artwork will be printed directly to the case unlike the jewel case wherein the artwork is printed on the booklet. This would instantly make your CD sleeve's artwork more vibrant and alive.
Since you will use CD sleeves for your album or promotional CD, then I suggest you consider that while brainstorming for your concept. It is important to know your strengths and limitations before coming up with the artwork than thinking freely with the artwork only to realize that you have plenty of limitations. When you are already definite that you'll be using CD sleeves, then come up with designs that will definitely look good on CD sleeves. The best thing to do is acknowledge the limitations of the CD sleeves and turn it into an advantage. Some of the wittiest designs I've seen do not attempt to be something they're not. If you cannot come up with a glossy, expensive-looking photograph like the famous artists, then just look for your strengths and do not attempt to achieve the glossy effect. If you do, that's the time you become cheap. But if you just use Polaroid photos or you just sketch an artwork using a ballpen (or something authentic), then you will gain respect and it will make the CD sleeves original.
When it comes to the technical side, you better consult with a graphic designer or an artist who's familiar with printing. Ask them which colors look best on the CD sleeves you've chosen. Ask them what colors will look good and which one looks bad so you can at least tweak your design to get the most attractive CD packaging.
There are plenty of ways to make CD sleeves look attractive. Remember that our old folks made wonderful artwork in caves with just stones and leaves. I'm sure you'll come up with a catchy design. Good luck!
