Cecelia Ahern - one of my favorite authors

I first discovered Cecelia Ahern a few years ago when I was browsing through my local library and came across her book If You Could See Me Now. Even though I have a large list of books I want to read, every time I go to the library, I try to pick at least one book at random, based on the title or cover. I know it sounds odd, but this system works for me - I rarely even read the dust jackets, I'll just grab them and go, and so far, I've enjoyed every single book I've chosen in this way. So, the title and bright colourful jacket of If You Could See Me Now grabbed my attention and off I went with the book, never knowing that Cecelia Ahern would soon become one of my favorite authors.

Since reading that first book, I've read all of Cecelia's novels and a number of her short stories. As of January 2011, she has seven novels out, with another set to be released sometime this year, and she has several short stories in anthologies, the proceeds of which go to charity. Because she only has seven novels and I've read them all, I feel like I'm always waiting for her next book.

Many of her books are among my all-time favorites, and I've enjoyed every single book of hers. Many of them have a fairytale-like quality - fantastical and magical but so real too, with believable characters that you can relate to. Her books have the ability to make you laugh, make you cry, make you think, make you appreciate your life and loved ones more, and remind you what it's like to believe in magic, as most of us did when we were kids. Almost all of her books have some sort of twist ending that's the exact opposite of what you're expecting, or maybe even what you were hoping for, but they leave you feeling satisfied nonetheless.

A bit about Cecelia Ahern

Cecelia was born in Dublin, Ireland on September 30th, 1981. She is the daughter of former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern. Before becoming a novelist, Cecelia completed a degree in Journalism and Media Communications from Griffith College in Dublin.

At the age of 21, Cecelia wrote her first novel, PS, I Love You, which was published in January 2004, and sold to over 40 countries. The book was one of the largest-selling debut novels of 2004 and reached number one in several countries. Cecelia was nominated for Best Newcomer 2004/2005 at the British Book Awards, and PS, I Love You made the shortlist for the Irish Book of the Decade as well as the long-list for The International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. The novel was made into a motion picture by Warner Bros and Wendy Finerman Productions and stars Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler, Lisa Kudrow, Kathy Bates, Harry Connick Jr, Gina Gershon, James Marsters and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It came out in theatres in North America on December 21st, 2007 and was released on DVD May 6th, 2008.

For her second book, Where Rainbows End, Cecelia won the 2005 Irish Post Award for Literature, and a 2005 Corine Award, which was voted by German readers. In May 2007 Cosmopolitan U.S. honoured her with a Fun Fearless Fiction Award 2007 for her third book, If You Could See Me Now, and in 2008, she was voted Author of Year in the Glamour Women of the Year Awards.

Cecelia's short stories can be found in Irish Girls are Back in Town, Short and Sweet, Moments, Ladies Night 4, and Girls Night in 2. She has also written a novella titled Mrs. Whippy, which was turned into a one-woman play in 2008 and continues to tour around Ireland. Cecelia's other published short stories include The Production Line for Express Magazine, Every Year for Harrod's Magazine, The Things That I Remember for Woman's Own, Remembering Mum for Express Magazine, and Mallard and May for Woman and Home.

"I like to approach stories from a different angle and make an everyday tale magical."

Cecelia's novels

Be aware that with many of Cecelia's books, the same books have different titles - the UK title and the American title. I found this out after reading Where Rainbows End, then picking up Dear Rosie, thinking it was a different book, only to find out it was the same book just with a different title.

Where Rainbows End (US titles: Rosie Dunne and Love, Rosie) (2004)
If You Could See Me Now (US title: A Silver Lining) (2005)

PS, I Love You Movie Tie-In Edition

PS I Love You is a beautiful story of love, heartbreak, friendship, family bonds and life. Holly and Gerry are madly in love. Their love and their connection is strong and they've been able to get through all of life's trials together. Then Gerry takes sick and dies and leaves Holly a complete emotional mess. On her 30th birthday, Gerry comes back to her in the form of letters he wrote when he was ill, and that will be sent to her throughout the year. Each letter is signed "PS, I love you". The letters both help and hinder Holly. She's glad to have a piece of Gerry back, to feel connected to him again by reading his letters and hearing his voice inside her head and knowing that he loved her enough to want to help her through his death, but there are times when reading the letters makes her miss him even more and sets her back in her grief.

She watches her friends and the people around her moving on and living their lives while her life feels like it's come to a halt. Her pain is so real, so heartbreaking that it tugs at your heart. But when she has a breakthrough or when she succeeds, you feel it in that same real way, like you're living it right along with her. Gerry's letters challenge her, encourage her, and guide her. Holly learns that life is for the living and Gerry wouldn't want her to wallow in his death or for her life to stop just because he's no longer with her. She ultimately finds strength in Gerry's letters and his love and is able to live her life again and know that Gerry will never truly be gone.

Both the book and the movie are heartbreaking, inspiring and uplifting. I found myself crying one minute and laughing the next. It really made me think and made me appreciate the people in my life more. I know what it's like to lose someone you love - it makes you want to hold onto the people who are left that much tighter and love them much more. Once you get past the worst of the grief, if you're lucky, you can see that because that person's life was cut short, it's almost like your duty to live life with more passion because they didn't have that chance.

The Gift

The Gift

Amazon Price: $0.01 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

Lou never has enough hours in the day. He always has two places to be at once, two things to do at once, and never has enough time for his wife and family. He's always making plans, thinking ahead, and wishing time away.

When Lou meets Gabe, a homeless man sitting outside his office building, everything changes. Lou is initially intrigued by Gabe and gives him a job in the post room of his company. He soon begins to regret his decision and finds Gabe's presence unsettling. Everybody loves Gabe - he's helpful and courteous, but somehow, he always seems to be in two places at once. There's just something about him that makes Lou wary.

As Christmas approaches, Lou finally begins to realize the value of time and what a precious gift it is. He sees the things that are truly important in life and how time is a gift not to be wasted. These lessons don't come without consequences though.

This book was incredible. Like PS, I Love You, it had me laughing and crying and appreciating life more. Time really is a precious gift, as are the people in our lives that we're lucky enough to share it with. Once it's gone, we can't get it back, no matter how badly we might want to.

The Time of My Life

Amazon Price: $14.37 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

The Time of my Life is funny, thought-provoking, heartbreaking, and incredibly original. I thought this book had such a terrific, unique concept - what if your life was a person and they were sent to help you make yourself better? I reviewed this book on my blog Ramblings of a Daydreamer - you can read my full review here.

Samantha Who?

Along with Donald Todd, Cecelia was co-creator of the half-hour comedy Samantha Who? which ran for 2 seasons on ABC. The show starred Christina Applegate, Jean Smart, Jennifer Esposito, Barry Watson, Kevin Dunn, Melissa McCarthy and Tim Russ, and was about Sam Newly, the victim of a hit-and-run accident who awakes from a coma with retrograde amnesia (meaning she could function normally but had no personal memories). She can't remember her friends, family, job or life, and comes to find out that she wasn't exactly the nicest person before her accident. In fact, she was vain, selfish, and her actions were often morally questionable, leaving her with many enemies. She has small flashes of who she used to be and tries hard to take this opportunity of basically being a clean slate and start over by changing her life for the better.

The show was really cute and funny, and I was disappointed when it ended after just two seasons.

I love Cecelia Ahern and her books, Her characters are so lovable, especially Ivan in If you could see me now- he's my kind of guy, he's like a child and is mature at the same time if you think about it, but he has that playful nature in him, plus he is super gorgeous

I've known about Cecelia Ahern, because of westlife (her sis married Nicky), anyway I watched PS I love you and loved it, I thought she was a good author to write that one. But my absolute favorite book of her, is definitely "If you could see me now" - it's really cute and romantic, and very magical- and Ivan is just soo cute, you can't help but love him. Ivan/Elizabeth is the best couple ever-they aren't typical at all...now Cecelia is one of my fave authors. PS : If you could see me now is a better title than A Silver lining, just sayin- she could've kept it that way :))

If You Could See Me Now

Amazon Price: $4.29 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

This was the first Cecelia Ahern book I read and I remember thinking 'if all of her books are like this, I want to read every single one' and I proceeded to do just that. This book is like a fairytale for adults - imaginative, magical and heartwarming. The characters are engaging, the story is unique and speaks to your inner child, even if its buried deep.
