Transitions, life events baby boomers' taking time and ceremony on their own terms
There is an open-mindedness to clients and their beliefs. It's all about working with people to craft a personalized ceremony. Maybe they can help to lay the foundation for a new personal or family ritual where an established one just doesn't work any longer.
There are certain symbols that many contemporary rituals and ceremonies embrace, be they in the form of sound or action, the meanings in color, shapes, what is worn, etc. I'll be looking more at that in future lenses. Links to other lenses in the series are linked below.
In this page, I'm introducing some of the basics about celebrants and some of the variety of ceremonies they may preside over. Some of these are milestones in your life that you may have felt slipped away without the honor, recognition or even moment taken to stop and absorb the event that was deserved.
Much of the research I've done has shown an upswing in the blossoming of many new rituals. It is often attributed to baby boomers. This is a generation not apt to turn to go gently into any new phase of life.

Events to be honored; Honor Your Voice: Celebrant Stacy Willhoit
Perhaps there is an event for a civic organization, a business opening or closing, or an awards/achievements ceremony that you would like to bring your passion and mindfulness to in a way that is not usually considered in American society.
Organizations of all types are similar to extended families. In fact, we often spend more time in our week with those unrelated to us than we do with our immediate family.
Because of this, when an organization undergoes a transition (whether positive or negative in nature) each member of the group is impacted by this change. Creating a ceremony that recognizes the effect of the transition your group is experiencing is an important aspect of our lives that is often over-looked. Some transitional moments in civic life that you might wish to consider honoring with a ceremony:
Business Opening or Closing
Retirement from Your Place of Employment
Job Downsizing or Transition
Death of an Employee or Employer
Awards & Achievements for Your Organization
Military Homecomings
Public Vigils for Healing & Hope
Fundraising & Other Charitable Organization Events
If you would like to discuss the possibilites for honoring a time of transition in your organization or your personal life, please call or email me to discuss your needs.

The Importance of Ceremony & Rites of Passage
Celebrant USA Foundation and Institute
"Ceremony assists people to adjust to change (a marriage ceremony does this for families), to recognize achievement (a classic example is a graduation ceremony), to relate, to express love, and/or to establish a relationship. Ceremonies are the human way we have to signpost a deal such as a business merger, to trigger off a healthy grief process (such as in divorce or funeral ceremonies), to welcome another human being into the family. So Ceremonies have these excellent effects - they can be used further to announce intentions, to express loyalty and to reinforce a sense of identity." - Dally Messenger III, President of the International Federation of Civil Celebrants
"We need rituals at many times, whether for healing or transformation, celebration or mourning. To learn to create our own is to empower ourselves, and this can enrich our lives immeasurably." - Juliet Batten, Power from Within
"A culture that forgets its rites of passage eventually loses its capacity to celebrate joy and unity." - Michael Meade
"The tribal ceremonies of birth, initiation, marriage, burial, installation, and so forth, serve to translate the individual's life-crises and life-deeds into classic, impersonal forms. . . The whole society becomes visible to itself as an imperishable living unit. Generations of individuals pass, like anonymous cells from a living body, but the sustaining, timeless form remains. By an enlargement of vision to embrace this super-individual, each discovers himself enhanced, enriched, supported and magnified."
- Joseph Campbell
What are 'Rites of Passage'?
The French anthropologist and folklorist Arnold van Gennep, best known for his studies of the rites of passage of various cultures, and whose major work was "Rites of Passage" (1909), is credited with coining the phrase, rites of passage.
Van Gennep emphasized the structural analogies among various rites by demonstrating that all are characterized by three phases: separation, transition and reincorporation. Van Gennep saw the rites as means by which individuals are eased, without social disruption, through the difficulties of transition from one social role to another.
The person or (persons) on whom the rites center is first symbolically severed from his old status, then undergoes adjustment to the new status during the period of transition, and is finally reincorporated in society in his new social status. Many of the important and common rites of passage are connected with the biological stages of life: birth, puberty, maturity, marriage, reproduction, and death; other rites celebrate changes that are wholly cultural.
These rites of passage serve to bridge critical stages in the life process and to help the individual confront certain uncontrollable aspects of the world he inhabits. By providing a predictable, communal context for individual experience, rites of passage act to alleviate the inevitable anxiety that accompanies change.

One Perfect Day: The Selling of the American Wedding
"Blaming the bride," she writes, "wasn't an adequate explanation for what seemed to be underlying the concept of the Bridezilla: that weddings themselves were out of control." Interviewing wedding industry professionals and attending weddings in Las Vegas, Disney World, Aruba and a wedding town in Tennessee, Mead ventures beyond the tulle curtain to reveal moneymaking ploys designed around our most profound fears as well as our headiest happily-ever-after fantasies.
Goods and services providers alter marital traditions-and even invent new ones-to feed their bottom line. Stores vie for bridal registry business in hopes of gaining lifelong customers. Women swoon for what retailers call "the 'Oh, Mommy' moment" in boutique fitting rooms-an unsettling contrast to the Chinese bridal gown factory workers who make them possible, sleeping eight to a room and scraping by on 30 cents an hour.
Part investigative journalism, part social commentary, Mead's wry, insightful work offers an illuminating glimpse at the ugly underbelly of our Bridezilla culture. (May) Copyright (c) Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Name Giving Ceremonies, Baby Naming
Elizabeth Gray, Celebrant- Australia
The name giving or naming ceremony responds to the cultural and community need to welcome a child into the family. In western culture this ceremony goes back to pre-Christian Roman and Greek times. A child was not a member of the family until he or she was named at the naming ceremony. A name giving ceremony is not a baptism or a christening, though it is sometimes referred to as a 'secular christening'.
Why do it?
This ceremony is a fulfilling and meaningful experience for all concerned. It is an occasion where a new birth is celebrated and a child is welcomed into the world. Family relationships are deepened and parents become more fully aware of their responsibilities. So, too, do the grandparents and godparents/guardians/mentors.
The naming ceremony is an excellent occasion for the cultural expression of joy, hope and acceptance. Many Christians do not believe in infant baptism, so choose this cultural celebration and leave the child free to choose or not to choose baptism later in their lives. In fact all naming ceremonies are done or performed on this principle.

- Little Silver Country hotel - Naming Ceremonies
- Little Silver Country Hotel, Ceremonies are held in the splendour of Kent Hall or the Orangery and on warmer days in the beautifully landscaped gardens. Each setting is an ideal location to celebrate with loved ones, the birth of a child, or to welcome children into a new family. A celebrant can be provided to conduct the ceremony, which is normally held at lunchtime or early afternoon.
How to Create an Inspiring Naming Ceremony
How to Create an Inspiring Naming CeremonyThe joy and delight of having children in your life is a gift worth celebrating and creating a welcoming or naming ceremony for your child is rich with possibilities.
Whether you have traditional family customs you would like to incorporate or you are starting from scratch; Wendy's naming ceremony book will take you through an easy yet comprehensive step by step guide to creating a unique and beautiful naming ceremony.
There are examples, stories and ideas that will warm your hearts and help you to find exactly the right words you want, and there are naming ceremonies for young children, teenagers and adults.
All over the world people also celebrate the naming of many inanimate items of significance - boats, offices, restaurants, bridges, and walking tracks, so for a bit of fun there is also a naming ceremony for a restaurant and a beautiful boat included!
