The Meaning of Darwin Day
Darwin Day is the internationally-recognized holiday that celebrates the scientific and cultural legacy of Charles Darwin, who, along with Alfred Wallace, developed the theory of biological evolution of species through the process of natural selection.
On Darwin Day, we celebrate the value of critical thinking, of discovery, of intellectual progress and education, and of the freedom to think, speak and organize without the oppression of ideological orthodoxies. Darwin Day is also a day of activism to push back against those who seek to re-establish, in spite of all evidence, the authority of medieval religious beliefs that life on Earth was literally created by a god through a supernatural miracle.
