National Bubble Bath Day - Celebrate It With Style!

Bubble baths are that rarest of gifts - a deliciously affordable indulgence. It's hard NOT to feel pleasure and relaxation when you are luxuriating in a pool of warm and fragrant froth!

Some clever hedonist (to whom we all should be much obliged) arranged to have January 8th declared as National Bubble Bath Day. I discovered this holiday about a week after this year's occurrence, but I see no reason to miss out just because I found out about it a bit late, and neither should you! I'm wasting no time planning my own belated celebration (and it's going to be a real humdinger!). To spread the joy around, I've also assembled the following awesome tips and resources so that you, too, can celebrate National Bubble Bath Day with style and aplomb.

Let the festivities begin!

Pick Your Perfect Bubble Bath

Bubble bath bottlesThe perfect bubble bath for me may not be the perfect choice for you. I adore a bubble bath that creates mounds of fluffy froth that will last as long as my stay in the tub. I also am very picky about selecting the scents of my favorite foamy fragrances. Depending on my mood at the time, I prefer to relax surrounded by bubbles that smell like fresh spring rain, ocean breezes, vanilla cake or gingerbread, whereas you may prefer the scents of citrus, sandalwood or pine forests. As the French say, À chacun son goût!

Here are some bubble baths to suit a variety of tastes. Here's to finding a (new) favorite among them!

Sweet Treats

These delicious indulgences are calorie-free, but fair warning - you may start craving something sweet when you submerge yourself in one of these yummy-smelling scents! Philosophy is one of my favorite brands of bubble bath because they offer so many delectable fragrances. The bubbles are luxurious and long-lasting, but the scents don't linger so you won't smell like a bakery box for the rest of the day (or evening).

Bonus - All of these also can be used as shampoos!

Safety Tips for Soap Making: Many recipes for making soap contain either lye or sodium hydroxide which are caustic chemicals that can burn you very badly if you don't follow appropriate safety precautions. Be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and wear protective gloves and safety goggles whenever you make your own soaps, and always add lye (or any other acid) to water - NEVER add water to the acid.

Are you a bath person or a shower person?

I really enjoy showers, but there are few things that make me feel as pampered and relaxed as sinking into a fragrant tub enveloped in fluffy mounds of luxurious, opalescent bubbles. Yet I know lots of wonderful people who have no interest in lounging about in scented warm water and think showers are the only civilized way to bathe.

Which do you prefer - baths or showers?

Create the Perfect Ambience

There's a lot more to creating a memorable Bubble Bath Experience than just choosing the right bubble bath liquid/gel/etc. Whether you're enjoying your bubbles solo or sharing with a significant other, you'll want to select the perfect accessories to set the desired mood and amplify your enjoyment.

Following are suggestions for staging a celebration that will engage your entire body through all five of your senses!

Set a Romantic, Relaxing Mood with Candles

Everything (and everyone) looks better by candlelight, doesn't it? If you're using a strongly-scented bubble bath product, choose unscented or delicately scented candles so the two don't compete, or choose complementary fragrances. Tip: Soy candles burn more cleanly than wax candles, so they don't produce sooty smoke.

A bit of bubbly for your bath!

Sip a Sparkling Refresher!

Engaging all five senses can greatly enhance your bath-time pleasure, and sipping a cool, refreshing beverage - especially an effervescent one - definitely can add to the festive atmosphere. Wine and champagne are popular choices, of course, especially if you will be sharing this experience with a significant other, but soaking in a hot tub can be enervating, which can make alcoholic beverages an unwise choice.

Fortunately, there also are some excellent and equally festive non-alcoholic choices, including delicious, imported, sparkling juices and ciders that you can serve in an elegant (but non-breakable) glass. Some of the newer shatterproof stemmed glasses can be nearly indistinguishable from glass!

Tip: For a somewhat healthier alternative, try combining your favorite unsweetened (i.e., those with no added sweeteners) fruit juices or cider with seltzer or club soda.

Dry Yourself With Plush Bath Towels

A bath towel that skimps on size, softness, durability or absorbency can ruin an otherwise delightful bath. These generously-sized, high quality bath towels are good investments in your bathing pleasure - soft, thirsty and long-lasting.

Tip: When you step out of the tub, don't rub yourself briskly with your towel or try to get your skin completely dry! Just pat your skin gently to remove just the excess water and then moisturize your newly-hydrated skin. Note: Soak in a bath can either hydrate or dehydrate your skin, depending on the temperature of the water. See "Water Temperature Tips" for more information.)

For Your Listening Pleasure

Now that we've got something for your senses of touch, taste, sight and smell, it's time to choose the sounds for your Bubble Day celebration. Your choice of music will have a major effect on the mood of this party, so take the time to give some thought to this essential component of the ambience.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Water Temperature Tips

The pros and cons of hot, warm and cool baths

Hot baths are great for soothing sore muscles and easing tension. They can help you relax and, depending on how hot the water temperature is and/or how long you stay in the tub, it can actually enervate you (sap your energy). This can be helpful in preparing you to fall asleep if you're wound up, stressed out or anxious.

Important! If you do take a very hot bath, it's extremely important to remain aware of just how drained (so to speak) the hot water is making you so you don't pass out, fall asleep in the tub, or get lightheaded and lose your balance when you stand up or step out of the tub. Also, it seems paradoxical, but a long, hot soak will actually dehydrate your skin! Slathering on moisturizer won't replace the lost water (it just helps hold onto what you have left). So even if you love hot baths, it's best to save them for when you really need them.

Warm baths are recommended for most of your soaks. Lukewarm water (just warm enough to keep you comfortable) will hydrate your skin. When you step out of the bath, use a towel to pat off just the excess moisture (don't try to dry your skin completely) and then slather yourself all over with a moisturizing body lotion to keep the moisture in your skin and leave it soft and smooth.

Cool baths are an alternative to cool showers when the weather is hot. You'd be surprised at how refreshing they can be!
