2012, A Time For New Goals

Ranked #1,836 in Squidoo Community, #164,176 overall

Goal setting... if you don't know where you're going you'll never get there.

I'm a goal setter. These are my goals for 2012. This lens is my personal workshop for self-improvement. My goals include business goals, creativity goals, physical well-being goals, and self-development goals.

I invite you to read through my goals and then make your own.

If you have a goals page on Squidoo, please leave your link in my comments section. It is set up to accept links but of course I'll be looking at them first to make sure no spam links get posted.

Now onward, toward the goals!

1. Fight the Resistance!

Have you read this amazing little book?

Do the WorkThis is a fantastic, motivating book that explains why it is so hard to get work done, and what must be done to reverse that trend.

I hereby resolve to review this book at least three times this year. I have the audiobook version and love listening to it. It is a short listen... and I can do it while I'm out hiking.

I also hereby resolve to fight the resistance and do the work!

[Update: January 11, 2012: I listened to this last night while doing laundry. It is only 1 hour and 25 minutes long!]

2. Hiking / Walking

Yes, I plan to walk it out... as long as I can.

Klamath National ForestMy second goal is to walk or hike at least five times each week. I did this all last summer and then got off track in October when my father passed away. I left town in a hurry, spent two weeks away, and totally broke my resolve for walking. Oh my gosh... got to get back on that horse and ride it. I see a whole lot of hiking in my future.

Walking means walking all the way around my small town... in town walking. Takes about an hour.

Hiking means walking through the forest outside of town. We've got plenty of forest to walk through!

3. Finish reading Gulag Archipelago

by Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn

Gulag ArchipelagoA friend challenged me to read all three volumes of this non-fiction account of the author's life in a Soviet prison camp. I'm about 1/6 of the way into volume one... so I have a long way to go before I'll get to "the end". I am kind of a slow reader...

So far I've read about what it was like to be unexpectedly arrested... suddenly removed from his life and turned into a political prisoner. He then writes about all the weird things people were being arrested for. One woman took a neighbor's baby to the police station after the neighbor had been arrested. "What am I to do with this child?" she wanted to know. They had her sit there and wait, for hours. By the end of the day they realized they didn't have their quota of new prisoners, so they arrested this woman who had presented herself in their office. I have no idea what happened to the baby!

I'm nearly through this preliminary part of the book. The next section is about the interrogation.

[Update: January 20, 2012: I'm half-way through volume 1. There are three volumes. He just got sentenced. Eight years for writing notes to a friend, critical of Stalin's government.]

4. Increase my income by 50%

...one can hope, pray, work, and strive...

Dollar Sign by Andy WarholThis last year I increased my income by 50% and I want to do the same this year. I have to admit that because of the possible SOPA law this may become an impossibility since all my income is currently earned online. I hope and PRAY that the sources of my income remain available and profitable for me.

Anyhow, this is a measurable goal. I know what my income is now and what I want it to be at the end of 2012. I love measurable goals!

5. Publish River Girl

...a novel for children and teens.

Preliminary Cover Sketch by Robert A. SloanI am sure this novel will be published soon, but I wanted to mention it here. It has been a long-time goal to get my novels into print. I've got quite a few first draft novels, but only two are revised enough to publish.

This past year I finally came to the realization that because of the limitations of the publishing industry it is extremely unlikely that my novels will ever be published by the big five publishers. I'm not crazy about publishing with small press publishers, and I've decided to publish myself under my own small press imprint, Lifesong Press, an imprint of LJ Martin Web, my small business.

I recently purchased the ISBN numbers I'll be using to get started. River Girl is formatted and ready to go. I'm just waiting for the cover to be finished. More on this later....

6. Buy a Kindle

I love Kindle for PC but I want one of these...

Kindle FireI've been reading my Kindle books with Kindle for PC which is very cool, but I want a Kindle Fire so I can take my books in one lightweight, easy-to-hold gadget, rather than having to lug my laptop around with me just to read Kindle books!

7. Grow my niche sites here at Squidoo

...I've got several.

My goal in making these niche sites was to compartmentalize my lenses a bit... into topics. I love these niche sites. They make my life here at Squidoo so much easier to manage!

My goal this year is to grow them all to at least fifty lenses each, except the Baha'i account which will go to 19 lenses this year. I also intend to increase the number of lenses in my main account to 250.

Starting point:
Geniyyah - 21 lenses - still at 21
American Citizen - 31 lenses / now up to 37
The Summer Store - 13 lenses / now up to 16
Declutter Diary - 6 lenses - still at 6
Baha'i Light - 4 lenses / now up to 6
LindaJM - 160 - still at 160

This means I need to make a minimum of 234 lenses this year. So far, I've made 8 new lenses during 2012.

I try to visit each and every one of these niche sites daily so I can keep the lenses updated and approve all the comments in a timely manner.

8. Build Lifesong Press

...and publish at least 3 novels this year.

A Cat Rests Near a Stack of Books by Willard CulverI have a web URL for my publishing imprint - Lifesong Press. My goal is to build a website there. Also I intend to publish at least three of my novels during 2012. I know the first two will be River Girl (mentioned above) and The Scribe of Irohila. I'm not sure yet what the third one will be. Possibly The Alyssa Project as that is the one I'm revising right now.

9. Write something at my blog every day

...sort of like Seth Godin... keep the blog updated!

Linda Jo Martin
My blog and website... I've had this site for about ten years but I still need to develop it better.

10. Spend time every day on my career as a writer

...mainly fiction writing...

This is for writing, aside from my work as a content writer. I'm also a fiction writer and need to spend time daily on writing and editing my novels, and building Lifesong Press.

During the past few years I've focused more on blogging and content writing (like here at Squidoo) but now... I'm trying to balance my interests. I have novels to write, to revise, and publish. I commit myself to doing this work all year long.

Any comments?

Your comments are ever-so-welcome!

I may add to my goals list but this will have to be it for now. What are your goals? Post a link if you have a 2012 goals page here at Squidoo.

Sorry, forgot to mention.... since we live on 27 acres of prairie, the goal of walking every day (or riding a horse, since we have 3) is VERY doable. Like you mention below, I need to focus. I always feel like I am scattering myself in 3-5 directions at once. Probably because I am... ha!

I love your goals... super-ambitious, but very doable, I'm sure! It inspires me to create a list of my goals for 2012. So no, I don't have a link to my goals - YET. I'll add to my list of lenses to create -hey, that's a goal right there! :)

wow! super goals! I am excited for you about your book or books - didn't you say 3? wow! Amazing. Walking one hour inspires me. I am trying to walk every day but so far, cannot get much distance. hopefully my distance and time will increase. I am not close enough to walk around town, but I do live in a neighborhood that is safe to walk. I think I need to read that book you recommended -- Do the Work!!

I'm a long-time goal setter

I've been setting goals for a long, long time!

If there's one thing I really need to do it is FOCUS. I need to keep my mind and heart attuned to what my most important objectives are in life so I can make steady progress.
