Celebrate November

November is the month of big changes. With the change of the Season here in the Midwest (US), the weather is quickly turning cooler, the days are growing shorter, the trees have turned many colors, and along with preparing for winter, people start thinking of the coming holidays. And this month is filled with many celebrations.

The Tree of Wooden Clogs

Italian film 1978

In November, if the harvest has been good, pantries are full. All through the fall we have been harvesting things, bringing them indoors, and putting them into storage. And not only the fruits of the earth are harvested, but animals as well. An ancient term for November was "Blood Month." Summer-fattened animals were slaughtered. This event meant a time of hearty feasting within a community. A beautiful Italian film from 1978, The Tree of Wooden Clogs, includes an authentic and powerful scene of the November slaughter of a pig. The impression is not of violence but of reverence, respect, collaboration. The entire community joins in the work.

November Moon

Full Moon is called "Beaver Moon" by Native Americans of New England and the Great Lakes because at this time of the year those little beavers are industriously preparing for winter.
