Slinky Day
Richard James was a naval engineer. He originally developed the Slinky as an anti-vibration device for ship instruments in the early 1940s. But, when the Slinky didn't work for the Navy, his wife decided it should be turned into a toy. They picked out the name and decided to demonstrate it at Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia in 1946. An hour and a half after the first demonstration, they had sold 400 Slinkys - and it went on to become one of the most successful toys of all time!

Saint Catherine's Day
Saint Catherine's Day is known as la fête des vielles filles (old maids), for ladies over 25 and still unmarried. Apparently, there was a girl by the name of Catherine who was executed around the year 307 because she refused to marry a Roman emperor. That began a tradition where girls who hadn't found a husband by the age of 25 were called Catherines. Traditionally, Saint Catherine is the patron saint of virgins and philosophers who was martyred because she was a Christian.

Dunce Day
Today marks the death of medieval scholar Duns Scotus of Duns, Scotland (in 1308). Duns Scotus of Duns, Scotland was a medieval scholar. Perceptions of his views ranged from brilliant to less than complimentary. Duns Scotus believed that cone shaped hats increased learning potential. He believed knowledge would flow from the point of the cap, down and into the head of the wearer, making that person smarter. About all this accomplished over time, was the perception of a person wearing a dunce cap to be...... a dunce. There was a positive side to his use of dunce caps. It motivated the wearer to learn more, so he could be rid of the the cap. Scholar critics of his work derived the term "dunce" from his name and place of birth.

SMENCILS

Do you know what SMENCILS are?? You can buy these recycled, smelly pencils for your kids this Pencil Day and Recycle Day. They even offer kits so you can make your own SMENCILS!!
We roll sheets of newspaper tightly around the #2 graphite writing cores until pencils of typical thickness are formed.
Then they're hardened - allowing them to be sharpened just like wood pencils.
Next, we soak them with our gourmet liquid scents (made by an award winning fragrance company).
Once they're dry, we attach the erasers and apply the stickers around them that identify which scent was infused into each Smencil.
Lastly, we put each one into its own Freshness Tube.
The scent is guaranteed to last 2 years.
An average sized cedar tree will make about 172,000 wood pencils.
172,000 Smencils can be made from about 430 newspapers.
Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times saves about 75,000 trees.
The average tree can filter about 60 pounds of air pollution per year.
If everyone in the US recycled just 10% of their newspapers, we would save about 25 million
trees each year.
