Celebrating Mothers On Mother's Day

Mothers Are Special

Mother's Day is May 8, 2011. It's a special day to tell Mom just how much you love her and that you appreciate all she does and has done for you. Mother's Day is one day of the year we can completely dote on her and make her feel like she's the best Mom in the world.

Mom does so much for each of us. She nurtures us and teaches us the important things of life. She provides for our physical, mental, and emotional needs. Mom wipes our tears, kisses our "boo-boos", and is our biggest cheerleader. Let's take a little time to show Mom we have noticed her sacrifices and are thankful that she is our Mom!

Why Do We Celebrate Mother's Day?

Red Carnation

Mother's Day in the US was created by Anna Marie Jarvis as a day to honor mothers and motherhood. She held a memorial service for her mother on May 12, 1907, and started a campaign to have Mother's Day a nationally recognized holiday. In 1914, her dream was realized. By the 1920s, she became disillusioned with the commercialism of her holiday. The fact that many people sent greeting cards or gave their moms a box of candy (that they ate most of themselves) embittered her against her own holiday. She felt that sending a card meant you were just too lazy to write and that candy was a petty sentiment.

Celebration of mothers can be traced back to Ancient Greece and Rome. In the US, Mother's Day is the second Sunday in May. Other countries of the world have their celebrations of mothers throughout the calendar.

I just learned that a coworker of mine is directly descended from the Jarvis family. Isn't it a small world?

Carnations Are For Mother's Day

White, Red, or Pink

Carnations

Carnations have come to represent Mother's Day. Anna Jarvis delivered white carnations at one of the first Mother's Day celebrations. Anna chose the carnation because it was her mothers' favorite flower and white to represent the purity of a mother's love. This started the tradition of wearing a white carnation on Mother's Day.

The high demand for white carnations presented a problem for florists. They collectively promoted a campaign to wear a red carnation if your mother was alive and white if she had died. This tradition is still popular today. Pink carnations symbolize a mother's undying love. Dark red carnations denote deep love and affection, while light red is just for affection.

My first visit to Squidoo--It has been a wonderfull introduction . I am a mother of 6 and a retired RN and an artist with a website I just created!! At age 77, I don't remember giving my mother special attention on mother's day but I am now thinking of my grandaughter, a new mother--and how it is a wonderful profession--even she is an artist and an RN.Can I invite you to www.biblicaloilpaintinggiclees.com to share a taste of my work?

Unfortunately, it's do late for me to do anything with Mom on Mother's Day anymore but to remember her and miss her. I'm glad I made the most of the time we did have together. Mother's Day was a family event. While Dad was still alive he took Mom and my brother's family and mine to dinner on Mother's Day. Then my brother and I continued to take her out after Dad was gone.
