50 Fascinating Celebrities to Follow on Instagram

Instagram is a backstage pass into celebrities lives from musicians, actors, photographers and more. Unlike fan pages on Facebook or celebrity websites, Instagram is a site for personal photos. These are the celebrity photos by the actual celebrity and their friends. It is a fun way to learn more insights about the people you follow in the public eye, like Kim Kardashian (pictured here) who has posted over 950 photos and has over 6.7 million Instagram followers.

There are amazing unknown photographers, interesting public figures and talented artists that are Instagram users. One of the best things about Instagram is that people are posting photos they have taken instead of reposting photos as people do on Tumblr. It is also not a site for people to market website links and other spam that clutter up Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and most other sites. Instead it is purely a photo sharing site usually by the person that snapped the photo. That is really the beauty of Instagram -- it remains a pure site with very little spam.

But you have to know who to follow on Instagram to get the most out of it. And that is what we have attempted to do with this site. We have highlighted over 50 active Instagram users that bring a unique and compelling flair to their photo sharing. We have included users from six distinct categories; Artists and Photographers, Mainstream Musical Artists, Inspirational and Non-Profit Users, Actors and Actresses, Sports Figures and Edgy Instagram Celebrities.

While Instagram is only accessible as a mobile app, there are several entrepreneurs that have created sites that allow you to access your account from the web. Three of the most popular web viewers are Webstagram, Statigram and Ink361. This can make it a bit easier to navigate and monitor your following group, make comments, etc. The links I have provided below, to interesting celebs and users, are all to the Webstagram viewer where you can follow them if you are logged into your account.

A little bit about my selection criteria. While I know there are celebrities that would be fun to follow, if they don't post pictures then you are just looking at a "blank sheet of paper". In general, I wanted an Instagram user to have posted at least 100 photos for inclusion on the list. I would love to follow @KatyPerry but she has only posted 3 photos, so what is the point.

There are a few exceptions if the user has a huge Instagram following or if they have begun to post much more often. For instance, when I started my research Deron Williams (@dwill8), of the New Jersey Nets, only had about 80 photos. However, he was new to Instagram and he has proven to be a prolific poster, putting up between 4-10 photos a day as the US Team has toured Europe tuning up for the Olympics. It is a fun glimpse inside the latest version of the Dream Team.

You will notice a distinct skew to younger celebrities -- that is not a bias on my part, but unfortunately far fewer big name older celebrities participate on Instagram. Even if they have an Instagram account, they do not participate by posting any photos. You will find some older celebrities with Instagram such as Snoop Dogg and MC Hammer, but for the most part, its younger celebs that have embraced Instagram much more quickly.
