Celebrity Tattoos That Were Covered Up

While tattoos are a hot fashion accessory some are soon thought to be mistakes and then you have to decide on how to cover them up. Celebrities have become quite good at changing their tattoos on a whim.

The most well known female celeb that has had to cover up a tattoo design (actually more than one!) is Angelina Jolie. The most well-known male celeb that has had to cover up a tattoo design is Johnny Depp.

Let's have a look at celebrities that we know off who have had to cover up earlier tattoos and see if we can learn from their public mistakes.

You can purchase the Amy Winehouse poster pictured by clicking here.

Love Doesn't Always Last Forever!

Unfortunately this never seems more so than in Hollywood and so you'd think celebrities would stop tattooing their latest love's name onto their bodies and yet they continue and have to end up covering the tattoo up or trying laser removal. The first celeb that I remember having this problem (although I'm sure someone can think of earlier cases!) is Johnny Depp.

Johnny Depp Tattoo Cover Up

Johnny Depp PosterBack in the early 1990s Johnny Depp was engaged to Winona Ryder and got her name loving tattooed on his right arm - it read Winona Forever. After nearly four years their relationship was over, but Depp didn't really want to have the tattoo removed. As he said in an interview in GQ "I think of my tattoos like a journal to have it removed, or erase it, is to try and say it never happened. If I alter it in some way, make it funny - put her next boyfriend's name on top of it, say - it would still be honest."

So what did Johnny do? He went the funny route by changing it to read Wino Forever!

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie has also had to cover up tattoos because of bad romances, but she's also had tattoos removed because they just don't relay the message she wants any more or because she quite simply has changed her mind.

Angelina does offer some sound advice to people considering getting a loved one's name tattooed onto their body however.

“I'll never be stupid enough to have a man's name tattooed on me again”

Unfortunately it appears that she quickly forgot that advice herself and has since had a tattoo put on her body to represent Brad Pitt!

Angelina Jolie's Tattoo Cover Ups

Angelina Jolie PosterAngelina has had many of her tattoos covered up including her very first tattoo which was a Japanese kanji for the word 'Death.' It seems strange to get this tattooed onto your body, but according to Angelina it was a way of reminding herself to live her life to the fullest - this is the same actress that used to carry a vial of her ex's blood around her neck, so it's easy to understand in that context.

When Angelina adopted her first child - son Maddox - she no longer needed a tattoo to remind herself to live life to the fullest so she had the tattoo covered up with an ancient Khmer script.

Don't Tattoo Drunk!

Angelina Jolie PosterWhen you've been drinking things appear like a great idea when they really are not and I know of a few people who have ended up with tattoos they regret - Angelina Jolie has also had this experience.

While Angelina was in Amsterdam she got drunk and had a blue tongue dragon tattoo put on her stomach. She covered this small tattoo with a large black cross tattoo.

Angelina has also had a small blue window tattoo on her lower back which looked a little like the rectangle window on Play School and was said to represent her outlook on life. When she had her large Bengal Tiger tattoo put onto her back it's tail covered up this tattoo.

Not all of Angelina's tattoo 'mistakes' have been covered over - she's had two of them removed by laser. Both of these two are ones she had done when she was married to Billy Bob Thornton.

She had a tattoo on her left arm that read Billy Bob and this was removed when they were divorced. Angelina also had a black dragon tattoo on her left arm that was thought to represent Billy Bob, this one didn't get removed until she adopted Maddox. She had it removed by laser and the area has since been tattooed with the co-ordinates of the birthplaces of each of her children, as well as more recently Brad Pitt's birthplace co-ordinates.

Lady Gaga's Tattoo Cover Up

Lady Gaga is well known for both her costumes and her growing collection of tattoos however her first tattoo can't be seen anymore as she's had it covered up!

When Lady Gaga was only 17 and still going by the name she was christened with she got hold of a fake id and got her first tattoo - a treble clef. For a musician it seems quite appropriate to get a treble clef tattoo getting that tattoo on you back hip seems fine, Lady Gaga however decided that it wasn't something she wanted to keep.

What to do with an unwanted tattoo? Cover it up with a different one of course! Lady Gaga had a mixture of intertwining vines and roses tattooed on her back and waist which are easily seen in some of her music videos, especially the Bad Romance music video.

Amy Winehouse's Tattoo Cover Up

Another celebrity who's well known for her tattoos got a little fed up with comments about her naked lady tattoo on her left arm so covered it up..........................................by adding a bikini to the lady!

There are so many other celebrity tattoo cover ups around that it's hard to name them all, but feel free to add one's that you think are worth mentioning here -

That was a clever job that Depp did, if only some mistakes could be as easily covered up as that. I don't see what's wrong with Angelina's blue dragon tattoo. I mean maybe you don't want it being seen but it's not like it's a bad tattoo.

Covering Up Tattoos

There are two ways of covering up regrettable tattoos - laser removal, which I have to say isn't always that successful and finding a way to cover it up using another tattoo. Sometimes it can be hard to come up with what tattoo would cover up another and still look good and not become a further 'regrettable tattoo.'

If you've had a lot of tattoos then you probably have a regular tattoo artist who you can discuss your tattoo 'mistake' with to come up with a solution. If not then there are different places you can turn to for help and one of them is the Discussion Forum at Tattoo Me Now.

This is a members only site where you can discuss tattoos, get free tattoo designs printed off to take to your tattoo studio, get recommendations for tattoo artists in the area (great for if you've just moved) and so much more.

Temporarily Covering Up Tattoos

Celebrities are lucky in that when they're acting on film or television they can have a make up artist cover up their tattoos if the role calls for it, but what can we mere mortals do? Sometimes there are occasions when you just don't want to show off your tattoo and in order to fix that up for a little while we can turn to the expertise of Celebrity tattoo artist Kat Von D. Kat has developed her own range of tattoo concealers and if you look in the sidebar to the right you'll see them along with directions on how to best use them.

Very interesting lens. I don't know that I'd ever put a tattoo of someone's name on me. Or even any tattoo for that matter! My husband has one of his daughter's name, I told him that now he has to put the other three children on too.
