Nice lens. It's amazing how prevalent smoking was back then; I'm curious as to how many of those stars ended up with cancer.

Well this is something we won't see anymore: actors promoting cigarettes! I love everything vintage, and vintage ads makes and interesting collection. Blessed by the resident collecting memorabilia squidoo angel!

Got a kick out of this one too. You do amazing research, show your items and comment just as appropriate. I'm more wordy, but I enjoy these. Good luck!

Always surprising in this day and age all the smoking ads and how it was sexy. Intersting change in the times.

    Hi,

Look at all those stars that smoked. I think we also had a actor turned president, that did ads for Chesterfield. The line that I laughed at all the time is "More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette." :)

I guess the reason a chocolate company didn't use Lucy is because she was under contract to Phillip Morris. There is nothing to stop a chocolate company from using that skit nowadays. In fact I think it is a very good idea. Thanks for the lens.

Oh I remember Lucy and Desi doing those commercials! What fun! Delightful! Does this mean I am now vintage? I think it does!

Great lens! 5 Stars and Favorite! Very nostalgic feeling after seen all these images! I don't like smoking, but love this new image for me of Gregory Peck! He is my Idol!:) Zenya

Love the Gregory Peck ad. I didn't realized he was so handsome...I only remember him from Moby Dick. I use vintage ads sometimes as cool inexpensive (not always) decoration pieces.

Well they don't do the cigarette ads anymore, but they certainly certainly love their endorsement deals. But then, who wouldn't. The celebs usually get free supplies of the product and they get paid for it. I'd say the stars of the Golden Age got the short end of the stick.
  • Margo_Arrowsmith Nov 17, 2008 @ 3:48 am | delete
Well, I know that they used to advertise cigarettes as being a good diet aid, but I don't know if I am going to be able to survive seeing Gregory Peck hawking them! lol Very interesting lens!

5 Stars for choosing such a great Theme !
I love the old magazines of past years and the great covers on the "PULP" magazines.
They have an Annual Convention of collectible paper ephemera and I browsed for hours...
    Best wishes,
    Karen

I have a couple of books on vintage advertising - great reading! Chesterfield cigarettes did dozens of them with different celebs.

The color ads with celebrity pictures are so striking. Maybe I should start a new hobby!
