Celje

Celje is 3rd biggest city in Slovenia by population. It is situated near river Savinja with very interesting old town centre where you can see many old buildings, towers, churches, walls, etc. Above the city is rising Celje Castle from which is wonderful view of Celje and neighbourhood. Very popular tourist attraction in the neighbourhood is Lake Smartinsko. In the last time new path to the lake were made for walkers and bicyclist. Celje is also fair city with many different fairs through all the year.

Church and Home of St. JosephChurch and Home of St. Joseph are located on the small hill with a great view to the city Celje. In the year 1852 the church was given into the hands of Lazarists who also built the cloister. Today is the secular and spiritual place. If you want, you can spend the night there. They organize spiritual practices, different courses, concerts and many other.

Varied historical past

Old town centreOld town centre in Celje has varied historical past, which can be seen on every step. In Roman times was rather wealthy and strong town. In the 14th and 15th century the city reached its zenith and the main role were having the Celje Counts. Celje got the town rights in the year 1451. In the old town centre you can see the Celje's House, old walls, the Slovene National Theatre, St. Mary's Church, the National House, the Castle of Princes, the Water Tower and many other.

Place with a park, hills, church and temple

Right bank of river SavinjaRight bank of river Savinja is a place with a City Park, St. Cecilia's Church and Capuchin monastery, Heracles Temple, Miklavski hrib (Nicholas Hill), Anski vrh and Petricek. You can do many sport or leisure activities, visit a church or just enjoy in views to the city from the hills. In the City Park is a playground for children.

City ParkCity Park is situated on the right bank of the river Savinja. You can come to the park from the old town centre, if you cross the bridge. Next to the park is also a parking place. There are many benches, walking paths, playground for children, skating rink, tenis courts and many other. City Park is a good starting point for short trips to the nearby Anski vrh and Miklavski hrib.

The easiest way to come to the church and monastery is by 90 covered stairs, which were made in the year 1826 and renovated in the year 1972. From here is a nice view to the old town centre and river Savinja.

Heracles TempleHeracles Temple is located on the right bank of the river Savinja and rather hidden to our eyes, so we have to be careful when we look for it. It is situated above Celje City Park, near the main road. The Heracles Temple was the antique cult building and intended for worship of divinities. Today are seen only the ruins of the beautiful temple.

Miklavski hrib (Nicholas Hill)Miklavski hrib (Nicholas Hill) is a smaller hill on the right bank of the river Savinja. You can not miss the path to the top, because there are many information boards. On the top is the belvedere and the Church of St. Nicholas, which was built in the year 1400 and completely renovated in the year 1931. From the belvedere is in sunny weather nice view to the city Celje, church, Castle Celje and neighbourhood.

Smartinsko Lake

Beautiful lake in the nearness of Celje

Smartinsko LakeSmartinsko Lake is located near the city Celje. It was made in the year 1970 and belongs to the largest artificial lakes in Slovenia. Around the lake were made footpaths, so you can have a nice walk with a wonderful view to the lake. You can also drive with a tourist boat or have a drink in the guest house.
