Tips for Using a Cell Phone Camera

Cell phone cameras are everywhere but the quality of the average cell phone photo is pretty poor. This lens will share tips and software that can be used to get the best pictures possible from your cell phone photos. With a few easy steps you can really improve your cell phone photos!

Keep your phone steady: Many people tend to poke at the touchscreen when taking pictures with their phone. This often results in blurry pictures because poking at the screen causes the smartphone to move while capturing the picture. Instead, try holding the phone with both hands and placing your thumb on the virtual shutter button. When you are ready to take a picture, simply slide your thumb off the button or click the button (depending on your phone).

Avoid the sun: A major problem with the camera built into most cell phones is the inability to deal with high contrast scenes. An example is when you try to shoot facing into the sun. Most cell phone cameras do not perform well under these conditions. When you are shooting in bright sunlight, be aware of the sun and avoid shooting directly into it. If you are squinting from the sun in your eyes while taking the photo, then the resulting cell phone picture will most likely be a washed out photo.

Tips to get the most from your cell phone camera

  1. Light Your Subject Well
The better lit your subject is the clearer your image is likely to be. If possible shoot outside or turn on lights when shooting inside. If you're turning on lights in a room to add extra light to your shot be aware that artificial light impacts the color cast in your shots and you might want to experiment with white balance to fix it (see below). Some cameras come with a built in flash or light - this can really lift a shot and add clarity to it, even if you're shooting outside (in a sense it becomes a fill flash). If your camera doesn't have a flash or light you should avoid shooting into bright lights as you'll end up with subjects that are silhouetted.
  2. Keep Still
As with all digital photography, the more steady your camera phone is when taking your shot the clearer your image will be.
  3. Edit Images Later
While it can be fun to use your camera phone's inbuilt editing and effects, editing pictures later on your computer produces much better quality images.
  4. Get Close to Your Subject
One of the most common mistakes with camera phone images is that their subject ends up being a tiny, unrecognizable object in the distance. Camera phone images tend to be small due to low resolution - so fill up your view finder with your subject to save having to zoom in on the subject in editing it later (which will only decrease quality).
  5. Avoid Using the Digital Zoom
If the zoom is a 'digital zoom' it will decrease the quality of your shot to use it (you'll end up with a more pixelated shot). Some camera phones are beginning to hit the market with 'optical zooms' - these are fine to use as they don't enlarge your subject by enlarging pixels.
  6. Keep Your Lens Clean
Phones spend a lot of time in pockets, in bags and being used in all manner of weather and conditions. As a result they get dirty and can easily become damaged - fingerprints are a common problem on camera lenses - especially if your phone doesn't have a lens cover. From time to time clean the lens of your camera using a soft cloth (sunglasses cleaning cloths are great).
  7. Use the highest resolution possible on your camera phone
If your phone allows you to choose what resolution you want to take photos at then pick the highest resolution possible.
  8. Experiment with White Balance
Many camera phones now come with adjustable white balance which allows you to modify color balance in your images based on shooting conditions. Experiment with this feature to get a good feel for the impact that it has on your shots. It is a GREAT feature, but one that impacts different camera phones differently. Read your manual to find out how it works on your phone.

Photo Apps for iPhone

There are hundreds of iPhone applications available for photo editing and sharing. True, the 2 megapixel iPhone camera isn't the best phone camera around but when you combine the camera with these fun applications you will enhance your iPhone camera!

Digital Photo Enhancement

Digital photography is a quite recent development that has converted the large masses into photographers. It is by far the easiest way to take a snapshot and allows the photographer to enhance its overall features later on. Because digital cameras use rewritable digital memory instead of film, you can have the convenience of taking good shots and eliminating the bad ones. It offers the easiest way of capturing good images and converting them to interesting art pieces.

Indeed, even digital photography has come a long way ever since the first digital cameras and computers entered the consumer market. The development of budget digital cameras has induced tremendous change in the world of photography, as everyone with a digital camera can take a photograph, upload it to their desktop computer and then share it with friends.

The birth of mass photography has also brought a niche for online photography related services. There are several companies that cater the consumers' needs of this sort. Usually, they offer services such as digital image restoration, photo retouching, and photo editing or digital enhancement. These services bring satisfaction to photo hobbyists, as they are able to develop many "failed" photos into acceptable form.

Even though digital cameras allow immediate feedback on the shot, not all mistakes are easily noted on a small camera screen. Therefore many photographs that look quite right at first will actually need some attention before they can be used on the high resolution needed on for example printing them out.

Enter Digital Enhancement

Digital enhancement is the answer to many of the image quality problems mentioned above. It is the way to improve your shot and make it look more attractive, or the way to recover a photo from a lesser failure. With digital enhancement, you can easily increase the attractiveness of images by simply adjusting the brightness, contrast and sharpness of the image. You are also given the chance to enhance the color balance of the picture. The high resolution of modern digital cameras also allows for digital resizing and cropping later on.

There are many innovative ways to improve a digital photograph using these computer aided techniques. Anyone who is into digital photography can take advantage of the services that offered online, but most enthusiasts want to learn the way to do it themselves.

The professional Adobe Photoshop is a good tool that can also be used by hobbyists. The steep price can push users away from professional tools, but fortunately Photoshop Elements from Adobe or the Paint Shop Pro series from Corel have a cheaper price tag attached. There are also free alternatives available, such a GIMP, the GNU Image Manipulation Program.

I'm not impressed. Another website stating how to get 'perfect' images...I shoot with my cell phone camera because I do NOT want 'perfect' images. Apps, filters and photo programs are all too often crutches of the worst kind. I have a DSLR-Nikon D300s- that I use for particular reasons, I have my cell phone and my awesome Holga for other reasons. I'm grateful my college art professor taught me aesthetics rather than a merely technical education.
