Cello -- A Bass-ically Cool Instrument

The photo at the left is a Cello which was painted by artist Julie Borden (Click Here to Visit Ms Borden's Website). It is very interesting and colorful. It is fun. Bluntly, it looks Very, Very Cool! And it is very much in the psychedelic spirit of the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine." But more about that (And an explanation of this page's title) a little later in this page!

Along with the rest of the orchestral strings, with the possible exception of the standing bass, the image of the cello is that of a stuffy, snobbish instrument played by prudish people who only play boring music. People frequently turn up their noses at the very sight of the instrument, but most people have never seen a cello that looks like this one.Not every cello looks like this. Not every cello looks this cool. But that sure doesn't mean that cello is not cool...CELLO IS VERY COOL. We hope you'll have a slightly different view of the cello by the time you finish this page.

What's a cello?

Cello

The name cello is taken from the Italian violoncello, which means "little violone", referring to the violone ("big viol").

Cellos are usually made of wood, although there are modern instruments made out of carbon fibre. Cellos typically have four strings which are tuned in fifths, starting with C2 (two octaves below middle C) as the lowest string, followed by G2, D3, and A3. Thus, the cello is tuned exactly one octave below the viola, which is a fifth below the violin!.

The first known cello was made in the mid-1500's by a luthier named Andrea Amati. Only six of his instruments are still in known existence. Until the mid-1600's, when wire wound strings were invented, cello strings were made of gut. Since the baroque period the angle of the cello's neck has changed considerably, an endpin has been added so that the cello no longer needs to be supported between the players legs, and wire core strings have become standard. These allow for higher degrees of tension which permits a cleaner sound and greater volume. A great discussion of the differences betwen modern and baroque cellos can be found at Cello Heaven (www.celloheaven.com).

Just how modern can cellos become?

The 440 Alliance. "Four cellists & a percussionist forsake their classical ways to form a group the likes of which have never been seen. The 440 Alliance combines classical training with the stylings of classic rock, hip hop, Nintendo, and other madness that will astound you."

I've had the privilege of hearing this Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas group in person. They are fabulous!

Wood Violins is the brainchild of Rock Violinist Mark Wood. Mark was a founding member of the Trans Siberian Orchestra and is the mastermind behind Wood Violins, one of the most innovative electric instrument companies around!

Mark is a classically trained violist who turned to "the dark side" after hearing The Beatles' album Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and the music of Jimi Hendrix. After attending Juilliard School of Music, Mark taught himself violin, with the goal of becoming a Heavy Metal Violinist. He is a prolific composer, inventor of various electric instruments (including the Cobra Cello), and founder of the Electrify Your Strings program for school orchestras and student violinists.

Electric Cellos!

Electrifying or Shocking?

I played with the Cool Springs Symphony, a string orchestra. The conductor, Mark Johnson, was vehemently opposed to even using microphones with stringed instruments. "We can PLAY the music, or we can ELECTRONICALLY DISTORT the music," Mark said. I can't be sure, but I can imagine where he might come down on this question.

What are YOUR thoughts on the matter?
