History and Meaning of the Celtic Cross

The Celtic Cross dates back to the nineteenth century appearing mostly in Ireland. The early version was a cross-slab style that lied flat. The style was replaced by the erect cross-slab which was in the upright position with the design featuring a slightly rounded top. Both of these Celtic cross styles were decorated with interlacing knots, spirals and other intricate patterns. Eventually the extra rock around the cross was carved away leaving the shape of the actual cross, usually on a wide base, called erect free-standing cross. The legend about the circle incorporated into the Celtic cross is that St. Patrick drew the circle over a Latin cross to depict the symbol of a pagan moon goddess. For Irish Catholics this design is now a symbol of eternity, endlessness of God's love, or a halo from Christ.

    The Tattooing Process

The tattoo artist will prepare the skin where the tattoo will be designed by cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and shaving it if necessary. The tattoo design will be transferred to the area you have chosen which gives the artist a guideline for the tattoo. This is also a chance to make sure you like the design and where it will be located. A final approval from you and the work starts.

The tattoo artist will use a handheld tattoo machine for the drawing of the design. A sterilized needle moves at a controlled speed placing black ink into your skin's lower dermis layer. The colors and shading stages then follow using different types of needles. Depending on the size and complexity of the tattoo design the session will vary in length. If the pain becomes unbearable you should ask for a break or schedule another appointment to finish the tattoo.

When the artist is finished with the tattoo the ski will be cleaned and covered with a bandage. You will then need to keep the area clean, apply ointment or moisturizer and stay out of direct sunlight. When the tattoo scabs over the tattoo process is complete.

    Take Care of Your Tattoo

Celtic Tattoo Design of a CrossYou spent the time looking for the perfect design and endured having the tattoo, make sure that you take the time to take care of the tattoo to keep it looking healthy.

The aftercare of your tattoo will take a few weeks. When your tattoo is first completed it is essentially an open wound and a bandage should remain over it for at least two hours to prevent any airborne infection. When you remove the bandage wash the area with luke warm water by using a patting motion instead of rubbing. Continue cleaning the tattoo for three to five day and apply antibacterial ointment onto it. When it begins to scab over do not pick it. This can ruin your tattoo. Just continue to keep the area moist and the scabs will fall of themselves.

After several days use lotion or moisturizer to keep the area from drying out. Do not get the area soaking wet, succh as in a sauna or bath. Taking a shower will not damage the body work. Shaving the area should also be avoided.

After approximately two weeks continue lightly moisturizing the area. Use a high SPF sunblock over the tattoo when in direct sunlight since the sun can fad the colors in the tattoo.
