Celtic Woman: Riverdance Meets the Spice Girls?

Celtic Woman was conceived and assembled by Sharon Browne and David Downes. Downes, a former musical director for Riverdance, wanted to tap into the American love of Celtic music with the appeal of all-female pop groups like the Spice Girls. Other influences have been the popularity of Irish performers Enya and Clannad. Celtic Woman has been referred to as Riverdance for the voice.

Downes assembled five women who had never performed together before: vocalists Chloë Agnew (then 14 years old), Órla Fallon, Lisa Kelly and Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt. In addition to being the group's musical director, David Downes also plays piano during the shows and recording sessions.

The success of Celtic Woman owes a lot to the United States' Public Broadcasting System and its audience who have responded eagerly to offers of Celtic Woman CDs and DVDs in return for pledges. The group was taped in September 2004 at The Helix in Dublin, Ireland to a sold-out audience. PBS broadcast it during a funding drive in March 2005 and within weeks Celtic Woman, the debut album, took the #1 spot on Billboard's World Music Chart and remained there for a record-breaking 81 weeks. What knocked it from the #1 spot was Celtic Woman's own second album, Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration, released in October 2006. Their third album, Celtic Woman: A New Journey took over the #1 spot on the World Music Chart, pushing their first two releases down and giving them the top three spots on the chart. This third album was recorded live at Slane Castle in County Meath, Ireland in August 2006 and broadcast on PBS in December that year. Both the CD and DVD were released in January 2007. All of their first five CDs have been released simultaneously on DVD.

Celtic Woman Lineup Changes

Who is the Celtic Woman? The lineup of Celtic Woman has changed over time, with some members leaving to have children and returning, while others decided to leave permanently to focus on family and/or solo careers. Méav Ní Mhaolchatha took maternity leave in 2005 and was replaced through February 2006 by Deidre Shannon. Méav returned in time to record and tour for the third album. She then alternated during tours with new member Hayley Westenra before leaving in August 2007 to focus on her solo career. Her permanent replacement was Lynn Hilary, who remained with the group until late 2010.

Lisa Kelly took maternity leave in 2008 and was replaced by Alex Sharpe, who then stayed on when Órla Fallon left before the 2009 Isle of Hope tour to focus on her family and recording a solo album. Both Alex and Lynn left the group in 2010. Joining was Lisa Lambe. As of March 2011, Celtic Woman is a four-woman group with Mairead Nesbitt, Chloë Agnew. Lisa Kelly and Lisa Lambe.

One constant presence in the group's history has been the Celtic Woman who has appeared on all their covers. The identity of this smiling redhead has not been made known on the Internet.

I am a Celtic Woman so how could I not love this group? I just watched their special on Public Television earlier this evening.
