Black Combines a Pure Voice with Great Selection

Mary Black was born into a musical family in Dublin, Ireland. Her father was a fiddler, her mother a singer. Her brothers had their own group, The Black Brothers, and her younger sister Frances has been a successful singer in her own right. She began singing at age eight, and when she got older performed in Dublin clubs with her brothers. While she has recorded a lot of traditional Celtic music material, her family's background is not solely in traditional music, and she has, as a result, been interested in other genres of music.

In the late '70s Black joined the group General Humbert (named after a French general who aided the Irish rebels in 1798). On two of their albums, all except one song, "Crazy Man Michael" from Fairport Convention, are traditional, and Mary's singing is featured on half of them. She left that group and released her first self-titled album in 1983. She spent a few years in the '80s with DeDanann but kept up her solo career as well.

Mary Black is not noted as a songwriter but rather as one with a great ability to pick songs from a variety of songwriters and interpret them beautifully. Her 1987 album By the Time It Gets Dark illustrates this very well with a wide variety of material from songwriters from many lands and genres.

Mary Black's voice has been often praised for its pure tone and her albums have been used in high fidelity stores as a benchmark of quality in evaluating systems. While vocal purity is certainly a great asset, it's not enough. What has made Mary Black one of Ireland's leading singers relies also on her ability to pick and interpret great material and present it both live and in recorded form in a winning fashion.

Profile of a Performing Artist: Mary Black

This profile features song clips from Full Tide, Mary Black's most recent release at the time this video was made. Mary speaks of her family's influence on her career, which helps explain why she's not strictly a traditional singer but draws material from a wide range of songs.

Mary Black

1983

Mary Black's first solo album, recorded after she left the group General Humbert, reached gold status in Ireland within a year of its release. "Rose of Allendale" became her first hit single. The album is also noted as the first in a long-time collaboration with producer/guitarist Declan Sinnott

By the Time it Gets Dark

1987

This was Mary Black's first multi-platinum album in Ireland, one she has said is very near to the sound and direction she and producer/guitarist Declan Sinnott hoped to achieve. It's mostly contemporary or near-contemporary material from people like Richard Thompson, Eric Bogle, Pat Alger (who wrote "Once in a Very Blue Moon," a hit for Texan Nanci Griffith), Henry Mancini and Billie Holiday.

No Frontiers

1989

The material is contemporary, but Mary Black still manages to give it some feel of the Irish tradition. No Frontiers was a triple platinum album in Ireland and remained in the top 30 for over a year. It was also very popular in the United States, and led to increasing success on both sides of the Atlantic.

Babes in the Wood

1991

Mary Black's first album of the 1990s entered the Irish music charts at #1 and stayed there for six weeks. Its success led to a sell-out tour and her first appearance at the Royal Albert Hall and she also made an appearance on the cover of Billboard magazine in the US, where she was compared with Enya, Sinead O'Connor and Maire Brennan.

The Holy Ground

Mary Black combines her traditional Celtic roots with contemporary music successfully in this album. She once again displays her knack for picking great material from current songwriters such as John Gorka, Gerry O'Beirne and Jesse Winchester, plus her favorite Noel Brazil.

Circus

1995

The circus that gives the album its name is life itself as expressed in relationships and their many often painful twists and turns. Mary Black's pure voice and excellent choice of material shine in this offering.

Amazon.com lists Mattie Lou O'Kelley as if she's part of this album, but makes no other mention of her. O'Kelley was a painter and storyteller from Georgia in the US who wrote a book called Circus but there seems to be no other connection.

Shine

1997

This album departs somewhat from Mary Black's usual folk sound and has a harder rock feel to it Unlike her previous recordings, this one was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Larry Klein, a long-time collaborator of Joni Mitchell's. Those who have seen her live were perhaps less surprised by this album than those used to her more traditional material.

Song for Ireland

1998

This album returns to Mary Black's Irish roots with a collection of her best Celtic songs, both traditional and contemporary. It's hard to equal Mary Black's pure voice backed with traditional acoustic instruments, and there's a lot of that here on traditional songs and songs by Archie Fisher, Ewan MacColl, Noel Brazil and Phil Colclough.

Speaking with the Angel

1998

Maintaining the balance of Celtic folk and pop that has served her well, Mary Black teamed with Celtic producer Donal Lunny on this album and includes a couple of tracks written by Dougie MacLean. "Moments" is a tribute to Sandy Denny, a singer/songwriter from whom Black has often drawn inspiration.

This CD/DVD combo offers a CD of live tracks from various performances in the several years preceding the release. The DVD contains the documentary Still Believing and a live performance at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, plus several bonus tracks.

Amazon.com lists this as "discontinued by the manufacturer. It is available from Amazon.co.uk in PAL format.

Full Tide

2005

Like many of Mary Black's albums, this includes several songs by Noel Brazil, who died of a brain tumor in late 2001. This is her first studio album since then. In addition to Brazil, songwriters Black has often turned to such as Bob Dylan and Sandy Denny are represented here. One Amazon.co.uk reviewer felt this was her best studio album since the days of By the Time It Gets Dark and The Holy Ground.
