Celtic Cross Tattoos
With the likes of Justin Timberlake and Robbie Williams displaying their Celtic cross tattoos this design is popular with many people. And why not, this design hails from the land of the ancient Celts and is full of the symbolism and mystery of the dark ages.
With it's intertwining loops and intricate design, the Celtic cross tattoo is not an ordinary tattoo. It is a stylish and meaningful mark to ink upon your body. Many people today wear a Celtic cross tattoo because they simply like the design.
Celtic Cross Tattos - A Little Bit About Them
Once The Exotica Of The British Upper Class
Despite the popularity of the Celtic cross tattoos, there is little evidence regarding the history of Celtic cross tattoos. The ancient Celts passed their tattooing knowledge to each other orally, and there is little written down about it in historical documents.Today, modern people of Celtic descent, the Irish, Scots and Welsh, like wear these tattoos as a way to express pride in their history. Recent tattoo culture expresses total freedom of expression using the intricate designs used by the Celts. People of all heritages like these tattoo designs because of their beauty and the skill that it takes to make a good design. Celtic cross tattoos are also considered to be a style statement in our American culture today.
The unending crossing of the intricate strands characterized by a Celtic tattoo represent the permanence of love, life and faith. This symbolism has helped popularize Celtic tattoos.
Did you know that in the 18th century tattooing was the seaman's way of picking up a postcard or a souvenir from the places they had visited on their South Sea voyages? As the British aristocracy took to the seas, they began returning with tattoos as well. Tattoos became exotica for the upper classes.
Then, as western tattooists set up their shops near the docks in port cities and began tattooing prostitutes and criminals, the tattoo turned into the mark of the underground. For hundreds of years thereafter, the tattooist had became akin to an outlaw, and tattoos remained mostly in the outskirts of respectable society.
But today, as we look around us, we can see that tattoos have enjoyed a comeback in popularity, and are certainly not considered the mark of the underground anymore. As celebrities and well know people sport their own tattoos, getting a tat for oneself is considered to enhance the beauty of ones body with this act of self expression.

History Of Celtic Cross Tattoos
Tattoos have been used throughout history for a variety of reasons. They have been used as rites of passage, marks of status and rank, symbols of religious and spiritual devotion, decorations for bravery, sexual lures and marks of fertility, pledges of love, punishment, amulets and talismans, protection, and as the marks of outcasts, slaves and convicts.Celtic tattoos in general stress the importance of communicating a feeling rather than attempting to represent a specific physical object-and this gives them much of their power and their permanence. The Celtic cross is one of the most powerful of the Celtic tattoo designs.
For years the Celtic culture ruled most of Europe, specifically Ireland and Britain. When the Romans came along, all this changed. When the monks brought Christianity to Britain they adopted the ancient style of art for use with the symbols of Christianity. It was a clever move as the conversion of the Celts to Christianity stuck, and the Celtic cross with it's nod to both ancient pre-Christian worlds and modern antiquity is probably one of the most popular tattoos in the world today.
How To Get The Best Celtic Cross Tattoo
What You Should Know First - BEFORE You Tattoo
When you go to get your Celtic cross tattoo, check out how long the tattoo studio has been in business. You should look for a tattoo studio that has been in business for a long time and that is well established. Ask them how long they have been in business, and if it has only been for a short while, look for another studio. When you meet the tattoo artist, ask about their training. A tattoo artist is a skilled artist who has been trained correctly in all aspects of tattooing. A tattooer or tattooist is a looser word used when referring to someone that can trace a design with a tattoo machine.
For example, many tattoo artists have formal art training and are experts in other artistic mediums. They use these skills to come with better freehand designs and are generally better at shading and blending.
Ask the tattoo artist if they have done other Celtic cross tattoos. If they have, you have a much better chance at a better looking tattoo in the end. Since this is a mark you are embedding in your skin for life, you want the very best artist you can find, preferably one with experience doing Celtic cross tattoos.
Most importantly though, the tattoo parlor must be clean and safe. A brand new sterile tattoo needle must be used every time. Ask the tattoo artist to explain the tools and procedures that will be used during the tattoo process. If he or she sounds annoyed or unconfident, do not get a tattoo there, go somewhere else.
All other tools used in the tattooing must be sterilized or disposable. These tools must be sterilized and disposed of after each customer, of course.
The tools must be sterilized in an autoclave, an apparatus which uses superheated steam under high pressure to sterilize instruments. The tools must not be sterilized in an ultra-sonic cleaner or by a dunk in a tub of rubbing alcohol. And remember to ask the tattoo artist if his/her autoclave is FDA-regulated.
Make sure the artist always uses latex gloves. Vaseline should be put on you with disposable instruments, not by hand.
Everything should be laid-out for your tattoo. You don't want to share in a big bottle of ink with other tattoo-lovers; you want little single disposable containers of ink just for you.
If you keep these tips in mind when you go get your Celtic cross tattoo, you should end up with a stunning one, and avoid the risk of infection while you go about at the same time.

- Thanks for posting all this stuff about tattoos, especially the questions one should ask before getting one. You posted a couple of celtic vector tattoos that I liked and I might use one of those when I go to get one.
Now all I have to find out is how to get a tattoo if I'm Keloidal (meaning that my body creates excessive scar tissue when the skin is broken).
If you can share any advice regarding the keloids then please stop by my site at nycpostcards.blogspot.com and let me know. I'd really, really appreciate it.
Thanks again.
